1. My prayer
Steve   (06.05.11)
Just as was evident following the Shoah / Holocaust - as the nations either conspired with the Nazis or did not lift a finger to help the Jews - it will be evident yet again that the nations (but for one or two; maybe three at the most) will once again prove their hatred of the Jews.
2. A grimmer reality?
michael redbourn ,   arad, israel   (06.05.11)
The author repeatedly puts words into the mouths of the Israeli establishment. "For Israel, the most pessimistic scenario is to discover one morning that the Palestinians got the 193rd seat". "Officials in Jerusalem are preparing for a new, grimmer reality". Whereas the reality is that a great many in Israel's government and in the public would welcome and end to the Oslo accords.
3. surely if they have effective government over Gaza
Danny   (06.05.11)
then it is not occupied....
4. A failed terrorist international beggar state.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (06.05.11)
Well, folks, here we have it, an economic basket-case living off international charity run by terrorists, rife with corruption & mismanagement. If the Palestinians can take unilateral action, so can we. Annex the major settlement blocks & the Jordan Valley. No more transfer of funds - that's only 70% of their budget. Cut them off from our electric grid. Same for water. End all trade relations. If the UN recognizes them as a state, I hope they're ready to assume the financial burden. I'm sure the US Congress will really appreciate borrowing money from China to pay for Palestine. The EU will certainly pay for Palestine instead of bailing out Greece, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, & Belgium. As for the Arabs, the ones with money don't want to give, those without oil are basket-cases, like Egypt.
5. " Rules about to change"
graczek ,   Maryland, USA   (06.05.11)
An accurate assessment. Palestine will be admitted to de facto or effective membership in the UN, at first, even if it is not formalized. Eventually, Palestinian UN membership not only will be formalized, but Palestine will replace Israel as UN member after Zionism is defeated, either militarily or more likely by "people power", like we are seeing now.
6. So the fearmongering and scaring of Israel's hapless people
CC   (06.05.11)
continues...
7. @ 1, Steve: come on, not everything is antisemitic!
Harmen ,   Leiden, Netherlands   (06.05.11)
Dear Steve, Why interpret all support for the Palestinians as antisemitic/ anti-Jewish? Life is not always black and white. Most countries in the world recognize Israel and (rightly so) do not think at all about changing this recognition. They just also feel that the Palestinian people have rights as well, and they would like to recognize those rights. So why see a recognition of Palestinian rights as antisemitic? It is simply pro-Palestinian rights. I for one, and countless millions along with me, believe that the Palestinians have rights, and so have the Jews. We hope for a solution, a compromise, that gives both sides enough. You may feel that our belief in a peaceful, equitable solution in the conflict is naive. That is your good right. But do not accuse those of us who would like to recognize Palestinian rights of antisemitism. Because really, that is low, untrue and naive of yourself. Antisemitism is the hatred of Jews. And I, for one, do not hate Jews. And I believe that most people do not hate Jews. (All those in my vicinity do not hate Jews, so that is perhaps an indication). So have a little faith in and optimism for this world, maybe it is not as dark as you believe.
8. #1
Yochanan ,   Leiden, Netherlands   (06.05.11)
Im sorry you feel that way, but your entire assessment borders on the paranoid. If the 'nations' like you call them didn't lift a finger, then please be so kind as to explain the almost 23.000 brave men and women honored by yad vashem, who did what they did at the peril of their own lives and those of their loved ones. second, if you really think that every criticism of Israel stems from a virulent antisemitism i propose you find an able psychiatrist, because then you have serious issues.
9. #6 You got that right.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (06.05.11)
This is just another bunch of BS to put pressure on Israel to make concessions, unreciprocated, of course. It's not going to work this time. We're not scared & I wouldn't describe us as ''hapless'' - far from it. Personally, I think the Palestinian leadership (such as it is) has climbed up a tree & doesn't know how to get down. Here's something to consider - if they're independent, they can't be refugees, goodby money. Speaking of money, what currency will they use? How independent are they if they have to use Israeli shekels?
10. Time to reoccupy
Avi   (06.05.11)
If the Pals even start process at the UN then Israel must reoccupy quickly to get rid of their Govt institutions thereby takeing away qualification for state.
11. Unite for peace resolution
Palestinian refugee   (06.05.11)
the author didn't mention the "Unit for peace resolution" Palestinians intend to use to bypass the US veto.
12. #1 hatred of the Jews
Palestinian refugee   (06.05.11)
This has nothing to do with hatred of the Jews. Why do you have always to twist it to this direction. I have Jewish friends who support the Palestinians and I sympathize with the Jews for what happened to them in Europe but this doesn't mean that you have to take the land and kick out those who use to live for thousands of years only because you fear another Holocaust. Let's live together in the holy land in one state without borders, not Jewish, Muslim or Christian state, just a democratic state for all its citizens.
13. Contemplated U.N. action is arguably ultra vires
The contemplated U.N. action is arguably ultra vires. We need to investigate Legal Rights arguments ASAP to be advocated by Israel that could thwart this action. [For instance, I have postulated a legal strategy building on PM Netanyahu's speech to the joint meeting of Congress that I have not seen on Ynet nor any other media outlet.] Please, please, please: If you are an Israeli lawyer, knowledgeable in the Mandate for Palestine or international law, a PR/media expert, or have any other skill, e-mail me. I can perhaps help place you in established organizations or we can try to quickly form a working group to act as a lever for bringing this about.
14. UN and Pali state with Capital Doha..
Anna M Sedda ,   Rome-Italy   (06.05.11)
between brothers the best thing to do is SHARING...what about a share brotherhood state and capital with their Islamic family?apparently the "brotherhood" business is booming and they even need young people to work...guess what? Finally the Pali will not fight anymore and the Middle East will be in eternal peace...
15. The Un and the new REALITY.
Ayeush ,   Gibraltar   (06.05.11)
it is now a ubiquitous expression: New Reality. Sure, the Dr. Sabel talks about it in a very ominous prespectives. It will befall upon Israel the end of its phisycal existence....is there any appeal to this possibility?! Sure, and of course. For years I have been advocating to address this possible changes on the Israel legitimacy, mostly heralded in the West mostly by Arabo-Muslim coutries that operate in the West with the assistance of Western Parties who have interest in advancing the conflict in the ME. Now, Reality is really changing and our Leaders are to slow to recognise and act promptly, as we do have enough common interest with India and China.
16. Terry's final solution
Smith ,   TA, Israel   (06.05.11)
So Terry would have us inflict horrendous deprivation on the Palestinians in retaliation for their natural right to pursue a national home in a non-violent legal campaign? Hmmm, didn't the British put Jews in camps on Cyprus for trying to aspire to their natural right to self-determination? Or is morality a relative concept to you Mr. Terry? Fortunately for everyone in Israel seemingly rational people like Terry have absolutely no say over policy and if they were to find themselves in that kind of position of power I think the Mossad, Shin Bet and IDF General Staff would conspire together to topple them from power. Much like they conspired together to ensure that bone headed Yoav Galant did not become Chief of Staff who would have been an enabler of Netenyahu and Barak's drive for national suicide 2nd Temple Revolt style. Not a democratic position, I know, but it seems the true patriots aren't located in the Likud, Shas and Yisrael Beitnu primaries. Utterly corrupted fascists who wrap themselves in the blue & white. The true patriots are working round the clock to try and prevent the political echelon from destroying our country and doing everything short of an outright coup. Although given the average Israeli's shallow understanding of democratic values I'm sure it'd be a quite popular military junta.
17. Haifa as capitol Isn't Haifa in pre-sixty -seven Israel?
Shalom Freedman ,   Jerusalem Israel   (06.05.11)
One doesn't know whether to laugh or to cry. Haifa as capitol? Why not Tel Aviv? For all those who are suspicious of Palestinian good intentions their behavior is a confirmation of such suspicions. They do not want a two- state solution , they want a state which they can use to destroy the Jewish state.
18. REALITY CHECK
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (06.05.11)
If the U.S. threatens to cut-off it's contributions to the U.N. if Palestine is declared to be a Member Bye Bye, the Palestinian dream This is exaclty what happened in 1988, the UN backed down under similar circumstances, since the U.S. is the biggest contributor and it's money is what sustains the inept UN
19. Palestinian Statehood
Mike ,   Mount Vernon WA USA   (06.05.11)
This will never bring peace. It will ONLY bring war to Israel. How dare this usurper in chief (I still can't call him our president) tell Israel that they must return to 1967 boarders. This is not our belief as a nation, he has his own political agenda that he is following. I hope that the Jews, who are Dem's, realize who this man is and not re-elect him for 4 more years. He is no friend of Israel. He said he loyalties will always side with the Muslims.
20. #16 Terry's final solution makes more sense than your babble
(06.05.11)
21. To #12 Palestinian Refugee
Standing Tall ,   USA   (06.05.11)
Due to the religious intolerance of your religion, there can't be a democratic state that encompasses Jews, Muslims and Christians. You have been raised on hate and I don't see how that will go away any time soon. As for the people that have lived there for thousands of years, it would be the Jews, not the Arabs ("Palestinians").
22. #21
Jarda ,   Czech Republic   (06.05.11)
I'm a little confused. If zionists wanted one state for all the people of Palestine, why they demanded partition?
23. UNSCR 377
Nour ,   One-State   (06.05.11)
377 only needs 7 votes in the affirmative. The World is Uniting for Peace. See you in September. The winds of change are ever increasing in ferocity. Who is afraid of them?
24. Once they abrogate Oslo .....
Ilan ,   Ariel   (06.05.11)
Israel is required to supply electricity, water, and allow the passage of good due to the Oslo agreement. Once the Palestinians abrogate the agreement by unilaterally declaring statehood they will have to find alternates to Israel or do without. In short we have less to be worried about than they do.
25. Smith #16 Terry speaks the truth, and the truth hurts you
Jake   (06.05.11)
Wonder why Terry's posts always appear highlighted in red? Because he speaks the truth that even those who disagree with him out loud are forced to admit to themselves in private.
26. To N 4, Terry
Luiz Felipe Haddad ,   Niteroi, Brazil   (06.05.11)
Dear Terry. All radicalism is wrong and harmful to Israel, a State that I do endorse and do admire. I understand your fears, caused by continuous terrorism, but you must be rational. It will be better that Israel recognizes Arab Palestine under firm conditions, alias, expressed by your Prime Minister. If they are refused, the world's opinion will know where are the guilts. But responding through inhuman violence does not correspond to Israelian history, nor to Jewish ideals. Salutes from a Brazilian Christian brother.
27. Whether you agree or not
Salma ,   Palestine   (06.05.11)
Palestine is coming : )
28. Serve U.N. with legal proof Judea/Samaria are ours.
Chaim ,   Israel   (06.05.11)
Another fictional declaration of Palestinian statehood changes nothing. The bottom line is that such a terror state can't be created unless Israel is lunatic enough to allow it. The U.N. has passed hundreds of anti-Israel resolutions. Yet Israel grows stronger, richer, more wonderful every year. Israel needs to assert our rights. Serve the U.N. with legal proof Judea and Samaria are ours. We have such incontrovertible proof in abundance. Also serve proof on the E.U., all international governments and media. Than annex Judea and Samaria, as we should have back in 1967.
29. Separation costs dearly
Chris ,   Stuttgart, Germany   (06.05.11)
Had Israel after 1967 took steps to lead politically the West Bank and Gaza to a political system of civilized politics, we would have now a much more "europenized" palestian people. Instead, it was decided "we live our life they, theirs" and left the polical build up to Fatah, Hamas and Iran.
30. #22
Mike ,   Mount Vernon WA USA   (06.05.11)
Does your country have any enemies? Do you know what it would be like to have a population of people who might out number and who hate you come in and be your neighbor. Israel already lives on a postage stamp compared to the rest of the Muslim world, let them find refuge in some of their "peace loving" brethren.
