Construction is to begin soon on Ethiopia's Great Millennium Nile Dam project, which is estimated to cost some 80 Billion Birr (about US$4.762 billion), says Minister of Water and Energy Alemayehu Tegenu. He disclosed this at a press conference here Tuesday, which was also attended by Government Communication Affairs Office Minister of State Shimelis Kemal and Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation chief executive officer Mihiret Debebe. In briefing journalists on the project, Alemayehu said the Ethiopian government would finance the cost of construction of the project, which would enable Ethiopia to generate 5,250 megawatts (MW) of electric power, resulting in a three-fold increase over the current electricity supply in the country. Upon becoming fully operational, it is expected to hold 62 billion cubic metres of water, the minister said, adding, this would be almost double the volume of water in Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile and is the largest lake in Ethiopia.
