1. Ethiopia expands NILE RIVER DAM - Egypt threatened
EthioJegna ,   Addis Ababa Ethiopia   (06.09.11)
(Reuters) – Ethiopia did not inform Egypt it planned to build a huge dam on the Nile and the two countries have not discussed the issue despite fears a dispute over the river could spark war, Ethiopia’s water minister said. Work on the 5,250 megawatt (MW) Renaissance Dam – which will be one of the world’s ten biggest — began this month with Italy’s Salini Costruttori overseeing a project with a $4.78 billion cost Ethiopia plans to fund itself. “No. They found out from the media,” Alemayehu Tegenu told Reuters in an interview on Monday when asked if Ethiopia had officially informed Egypt it was building its first dam on the Nile — something Egypt has always opposed.

3. Looks like Barak got it right for once
zionist forever   (06.09.11)
Both Gabi Ashkenazi & Benny Gantz were telling him buy another surface ship but Barak insisted on buying a sixth Dolphin sub. Now it looks like Barak made the right call because a submarine can be used for both long range offensive and defensive operations. It also looks like Iran wants to expand its military capabilities into Israel's backyard so there is a need for more investment in the navy, which means more surface ships as well as the six subs. The navy has always been neglected while 90% all the budget went to the airforce and army. The bad guys are taking the war to us through use of their navy & we need to be able to counter that. At one point the government was talking about building in Israel an improved version of the SAAR 5 missile corvette allowing us to build oboats for ourselves and for export. Unfortunately those plans were shelved, now maybe its time to look into it again, its good because it would be good for the navy & the economy.

jason white ,   afula, israel   (06.09.11)
sitting on $84 b and no one wants to increase the defense budget. We should order more subs and more fighter aircraft as well as building another three divisions of armor for the south, more Iron Dome and Arrow batteries as well as artillery and more ammo and training. As for building more Saar 5 ships, what are we waiting for?

To an Iranian, if it's to big to float in your bath tub it's a battleship.
8. Iran's first target is Mecca, why their subs are in Red Sea
Marco ,   Spain   (06.09.11)
Talk about Israel is only a diversion. Ajamis haven't forgotten what Arabs did to them.

Maybe they'll be called al-Bismark?
12. Denigrate Iran at your peril
Robert ,   Brisbane Australia   (06.10.11)
Iran's jingoistic enemies are playing into their hands by denigrating their military capabilities. Iran possesses some of the better brains in the world and those who ignorantly condemn Iran do it at their peril. It is surprising that in this sophisticated age there are still people from "the only democracy" in the ME who are so stupid.
13. Ayatollahs' Subs
Brod ,   USA   (06.10.11)
Subs don't just appear in the Red Sea for joy ride. It is precursor for War. It is time to wake up and not be caught unprepared.

19. As Silly as Mike Dukakis
Mark ben Josuf ,   USA   (06.10.11)
The pic makes Ahmadinijad look as silly as Michael Dukakis sitting in the tank when he ran for US President. The translation battleship is erroneous. Warship is the correct word in English. Iran is doing the same stuff Reagan did in the 1980s, projecting power by exercising freedom of navigation in international waters. Israelis do it in the Persian Gulf, the US did it in the Gulf of Sidra in the 80s. Iran also has actually had problems off Somalia. Some of their naval activity is valid. Even pariahs have a right to self-defense and deterrence.

22. #3: not quite
tom ,   toronto, canada   (06.10.11)
while i wholeheartedly agree that israel must counter the iranian threat, i doubt that submarines are the best way to fight submarines. most anti-submarine warfare is conducted from satellites, airplanes, and surface ships. to counter iran's subs, the money would be better spent on surface ships, which can be more effective in a real war. the primary use of israel's dolphin-class subs is deterrence. a single sub is insufficient, because of the need for repairs and crew rotation, and israel's two oceans. but it is doubtful that a sixth one will deter iran any more than the first five.
