From a practical point of view if you want to allow the public maximum freedoms capitalism is really the only way to go. The problem with capitalism is it does create excessive promotion like he says. You buy the latest cellphone this year but the next year you want the new design. In a planned economy based on true socialism ( not the failed communist experiment ) the government would say here is a cellphone. Everybody will get the same phone and everybody will get a new phone when the government wants you to have a new one.... like army life. You want a car you have the option of a gas guzzling 4x4 or a small little enviormentally friendly one. A socialist government can say fir tge good of society nobody is allowed gas guzzlers. Socialism does allow for maximum use of resources because there is no wastage. At the end of the day it depends one what kind of government you want. Is it one that gives you maximum freedoms like evil capitalism gives or is it a socialist one where you don't have freedoms but if the state plans things right they can do some good things. Personally I prefer capitalism and think that unlike Star Trek where the Federation is based on a socialist utopia people want freedom rather than whats best for society as a whole. The ideal society just needs to find the balance of where government must step in and dictate terms and when it should be freedom of choice.

The problem is that the way human beings work, things don't get invented, developed, etc. in a purely socialist society. Most of today's capitalist societies include socialism (health care, etc). The problem is finding the right balance for each country.
