1. for inciting 2 self harm....
Assi ,   Israel   (07.04.11)
this rabbi should be punished! After all it is clearly detailed in the Tanach that no self injury, tatooing or piercing is allowed. What this so called Rabbi is advocating is against the Torah and someone should bring him before a Beit Din Rabani!
2. Honor thy father and mother
R ,   Israel   (07.04.11)
One of the ten commandments is to honor your parents. None of them is to wear long skirts.
3. Rabbi going too far
Yonah ,   USA   (07.04.11)
Rabbi this is Israel and Judaism, this is not Saudi Arabia nor is it Iran. We must not allow our women to hurt their bodies in this way. Of course as a father I would like my daughter to cover up but you would want this young lady to 'lie' just to wear a skirt. You are wrong.
4. This ruiling goes against the Shulchan Aruch
Yos ,   Jeruslaem   (07.04.11)
This ruling goes against the ruling of the Shulchan Aruch that we must be more careful about health than mitzvot!
5. Flintstones! Meet the Flintsones!!!
Nina ,   Gedera   (07.04.11)
6. Sick
Michael ,   Haifa   (07.04.11)
These people are sickening.
7. This Rabbi would be welcome at the Catholic Opus Dei...
Ehud   (07.04.11)
...as well as the Taliban.
8. it should be up to the child to decide
(07.04.11)
if she wants to waer a long skirt or not and i do not see any reason why a parent would tell thier child not to do so. not to have to inflict wounds to compound matters, that is unecessary. just sit down and talk about it with parents as to why girl wants to wear long skirt, now is that so hard
9. irresponsible journalism
y nadell ,   RBS   (07.04.11)
First of all, I find this article hard to believe. If it is true, it is definately not any majority Orthodox view, and is probably taken out of context. It is irresponsible, cause unneeded hatered towards the Chareidim, divisive, and plain bad one sided journalism. I am quickly loosing interest in reading these type of articles in your paper. And quickly loosing interest in your paper. Shame on you!
10. This HAS to be a joke!
(07.04.11)
I mean, did you find ANY parents - ok, sane ones, you know, that do not beat the child or not try to pimp her to strangers - that do not want their children to dress modestly? Come on, did you find ANY parent (sane one) that would say "I forbid you to dress modestly, I want to see your tits out and you skirt so small that you tush shows out?" What the hell is this ruling about? Rabbi Zilberstein gaining some press-spotlight?
11. Taliban
pete ,   uk   (07.04.11)
looks like they have moved to Israel
12. OMG!!! I'm actually speechless...
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.04.11)
...okay, no I'm not... Put this "rabbi" in a mental hospital. "inflict wounds on your self to avoid sin" What Jewish source does he get that from? Seriously, lock him up. He is a dangerous person to have walking the streets.
13. Prohibited by Jewish Law
Eli ,   Haifa   (07.04.11)
This "Rabbi" is ridiculous, and should be exposed as such! It is prohibited by Jewish Law for one to damage oneself. He allows this, but probably prohibits eating meat and fish because it is "dangerous." What kind of Judaism do these people have? We need to keep and protect our Torah to avoid it being sucked into this horrible state. It is our fault that Torah has come to this!
14. Self mutilation?
Bad assed Jew. ,   United States   (07.04.11)
Jesus Christ! The Torah says Levites should make religious decisions, not Rabbis. This nut job sounds like an idiot.
15. College age and Halacha needs permission?
R. Yisrael ,   Eli, ShomronBinyamin   (07.04.11)
She is over 18 and she can wear what she wants!!! ...there is more to this story than reported beware of Israeli "journalism"... But in any case, self mutilation is not the Halachic answer, as noted by others. Why the tatoo wearing israeli sub-culture of paganisim is accpetable to the parent, but not a pretty dress is a mystery to me. Parents need not fear their child will look down on them, and children need not fear their parents when it contradicts HALACHA! ( see the children of KORACH who were rewarded for going AGAINST their father.) Shalom Al Yisrael!
16. RABBI AND LONG DRESSES
H ROSEN ,   HOLLAND PA USA   (07.04.11)
Another religious nut job...The next thing you know they will OK killing reform Jews
17. to number 2
sad jew ,   ramat gan   (07.04.11)
Honour your father and mother, except when they make you go against the Torah. G-d is more important than your parents.
18. parents
sad jew ,   ramat gan   (07.04.11)
what kind of parents DON'T want their child to dress modestly? What, they actually want their girl to show off her body??? weird...
19. dear funny Rabbi,
Salma ,   Palestine   (07.04.11)
in my society we have different position between the parents and their daughters , what should we do ? hurt our parents or what? looooool.
20. this article is BULL**IT
shadoil ,   Jerusalem   (07.04.11)
What the press wont make up in order to continue its ongoing campaign against the religious if there is no real news.
21. RIDICULOUS
Tam ,   Canada   (07.04.11)
How dare a rabbi, a religious figure who people look up to encourage a young woman to hurt herself. There is no excuse for someone to harm themselves and another to condone it! You wonder why rabbis are loosing their credibility and respect, its because of THIS kind of nonsense!
22. Treatment needed.
Philip ,   Afula, Israel   (07.04.11)
Sounds like this rabbi has fallen on his head, should be put under observation. Calling acting minister of health Litzman!!!
23. self injuries
tiki ,   belgium   (07.04.11)
This rabbie must have hit himself 'a whole in the head', so he couldn't be held responsable for such an idiotic answer.
24. Out of Context
Yaacov Haber   (07.04.11)
This is a typical example of an Am HaAretz not understanding what he is reading or writing about. This article is not news - it is ignorant Chareidi bashing.
25. Depth of this scholar's thoughts is propotional to depth of
tom ,   tel aviv   (07.04.11)
any Faith/Religion: just about 0- ZERO. Oh and please , don't tell me about the wisdom of Torah: all this can be done on an afternoon and without God!
26. Insanity
P   (07.04.11)
Both the parents and the rabbi are insane. That parents would object to a child becoming more religious is their right. However it should not extend to the girls dress, especially since the girl, apparently, is over the age of 18. However, the rabbi is just as mad as the parents.
27. poor excuse for journalism
ynadell ,   Ramat Beit shemesh   (07.04.11)
This is not journalism. I have a hard time believing it at all. Even if it is true, is this new? Is this worthy of reporting. Or are you just being socially irresponsible and causing hatred towards Orthodox Jews? Please remove this fromyour front page. If you keep publishing these hate filled irresponsible pieces I will not continue reading your paper.
28. Lunatic asylum
Zyx ,   US   (07.04.11)
This is the only place for this guy. I am shocked when supposedly jews behave and think as stupidly as islamists. There should not be room for them in Israel.
29. Shi'ite Orthodoxy
Eddie ,   UK   (07.04.11)
total shite!
30. modesty is not conceit Mr Rabbi
Golan ,   Modiin   (07.04.11)
If a girl is so conceited that she would violate her parent's wishes then no amount of fabric will make her modest, rather proud, narcistic, egotist, haughty ect. Modesty is a sense of self worth and requires people to treat others with respect. I keep kosher and shabbat. My family does not. They take steps to accommodate me. In return if they "mess up," if the food is not stamped kosher but its an apple (!) I'll still eat it and thank them for it. That is modesty. self mutilation is not modesty, its disrespect, its going against the commandment honor your father and your mother. Its also coveting, wishing you were something you are not. And if you do that (if you teach that to your students) its like denying G-d.
