31. how long "modesty" has to be?
Vale   (07.04.11)
How centimeters of fabric can be the MAIN index of modesty? I'd like this rabbi to tell the girl to respect his parents, to respect her body and to be modest in her behavior and pure in her mind. Fabric is something that the wind can whip up..but a clean mind and heart are surely more appropriate and liked to G-d
32. Yaacov Haber, what was taken out of context
Jacob Blues ,   New York City, USA   (07.04.11)
Are you saying that the rabbi did not make this ruling? Or that he did, and did not say that she should harm herself. If something was taken out of context, then you should provide the missing information, not complain about Ynet's article. To me, the idea that a Rabbi would actually recommend that a follower should injure his or herself to satisfy the issue of modesty, is an issue that should be highlighted, and then condemned by the community. If what the article says is true, then the Rabbi is fostering extremist thoughts towards violence.
33. Incitement
michael Pielet ,   boca,usa   (07.04.11)
another case of incitement against religious people.
34. #25 That is not Torah Law
Vanessa ,   SA   (07.04.11)
People must not confuse the Laws of Torah with radical beliefs. Judaism is a beautiful religion and should be respected even if you don't belive them. As far as I have been taught the law does not require one to wear a dress or skirt to feet-length. It requires one to wear it on the knee (nothing wrong with that). One should not inflict pain on themselves either as the body is sacred so this makes no sense and is one person's opinion. No need to blame the religion just because humans are not capable of balance or understanding the beauty of what being a Jew is.
35. It because of Rabis like this
Debbie ,   Israel   (07.04.11)

Here in Toronto as well we have some rabbis still livingin darkness and backwardness of the middle age
37. The Holy Scriptures says not to cut yourself like the heathe
Rivkah   (07.04.11)
heathen do. When parents conflict with the Holy Scriptures, it is better to obey God than the parents but that is difficult. In Israel, children from dysfunctional homes can request to go to orphanages like Lev LaLev for Girls in Netanya, but in America children who call the police and request to be put into foster care are not channeled into religious homes but are in more danger in foster homes of atheists where rape is common and the police often will not do anything about it if it happens in a foster home. At other times, foster parents are held more accountable than biological parents. There is no telling what will happen. But finding religious shelter in Israel is needful and Rabbi Eckstein of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews should be told about this need as should the Jewish Rabbis in Israel. It is better to leave a non-religious home than to stay in it and become corrupted in one's moral choices, food choices, etc.
38. Haredi Idol worship
eddie ,   London UK   (07.04.11)
This is the behaviour of ancient idolaters, as in 1 Kings 18: 28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with swords and lances, till the blood gushed out upon them And where does the Torah allow human self mutilation and blood sacrifice? This man is a lunatic!
39. The Rabbi didn t promote injury!
Ora ,   JERUSALEM   (07.04.11)
This girl being desesperate asked if she could injure herself in order to receive permission of her parents to dress modestly.
40. 2 weeks after the dog story

41. are you kidding me!!!
meir ,   istael   (07.04.11)
rabbis these days are out of control , how can you tell someone he can injure himself for the sake of religion, dont these rabbis realize that they are breaking up families? i mean parents have a full right to tell there kids how to dress we dont tell there kids to undo there top button so they can breath do we?

45. I would like to know how Mr. Galahar is privy to private cor
(07.04.11)
correspondence between Rabbi Zilberstein and a college coordinator concerning an individual student's private and personal issues. (?!?) Unless, of course, Mr. Galahar IS the unnamed "college coordinator" and there never was such a student with such a personal issue and this is all a set-up to create a "scandalous" anti-haredi article. Mr. Galahar has some explaining to do. This seems a huuuuuuuge breach of privacy and personal ethics. Shame on YOU sir. It seems you have manufactured an outrageous and completely unbelievable scenario (see all of the other TBers who think it's bizarre that parents would insist on their child wearing miniskirts and halter tops, etc).
46. THIS IS A CLEAR TORAH VIOLATION!
EZ ,   USA   (07.04.11)
One may NOT "mark" their body or harm themselves in any way as this fanatical rabbi suggests. This DOESN'T JUST APPLY TO MARKING LIME GENTILES OR PAGAN GROUPS BUT INCLUDES ANY DESECRATION OF THE BODY HASHEM PROVIDED. this rabbi is a lunatic! A LUNATIC! SHAME ON HIM!!! SHAME!!! He should be stripped of his smichah and SHUNNED for such a thing!!! THIS "MAN" IS A DISGRACE! SADDUCEE!
47. Sick Rabbi- I am a religious Jew
Daniel ,   Efrat   (07.04.11)
This so called Rabbi does not represent Torah Judaism in any way -he represents a cult of sickness -don't judge the Torah by those who supposedly speak in its name !
48. 41 meir, Children fall in...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (07.04.11)
depression because parents don t understand their spiritual needs. And that is thousand time worse than a little injury on the leg. It isn t a matter of parents rights but at parents duty to take care of their children wellbeing.
49. wounds
david.teacher ,   london   (07.04.11)
what consummate rubbish!
50. To #24
Zev Nadler ,   Scottsdale AZ   (07.04.11)
"out of context" "he had bad advisors" "the sun was in his eyes" It is these blind declarations of a Rabbi's Infallability that allows for hushed-up sexual abuse, theft and many other sins. It also makes you no different than a Catholic Croat who believes in the Pope's Infallability.
51. Demand the equality of Jewish men and women
Michael ,   California, USA   (07.04.11)
That's right, men get injured a little after being born and end up suffering all their lives from the lack of sexual fulfillment. Now, this rabbi makes a lot of sense by telling girls to hurt their legs in solidarity with their boyfriends. Definitely less traumatic for a girl than what we boys go through; I applaud the rabbi for his infinite wisdom.
52. I believe tolerance is a two street and while i am secular
Shocked & Disgusted   (07.04.11)
i spend a great deal of time defending the rights of the religious to my friends and reminding them that they must return the respect that they demand for themselves. Nonetheless this makes me sick. What this Rabbi is REALLY saying is that parents must do for their children what their children cannot or will not do for themselves. Even is that includes harming them if they do not dress modestly. WE ARE JEWS! not barbarians! This is ugly and unacceptable. Shame on you Rabbi! How DARE you PRESUME that G-d would want this. WE ARE JEWS! You Rabbi shame us all!!!
53. Idle mind is devils workshop
Mark ,   Boston   (07.04.11)
Israel and its Rabbis are just bored, just plain bored, there are no Cast Leads, no natural disasters, no real economical crisis, just some crazy people in boats trying to reach the shoreline, no real big issues so Rabbis break the laws of the land by not answering the courts and don't want to, espouse killing non-Jews and children render Halacha that young girls can mutilate themselves, to wear a long dress and be modest. The mutilation which is of course an abomination by the law. Whats next for these God fearing Rabbis? Its as if we've been invaded by aliens with their ideas, customs and beliefs that are just contrary to peaceful coexistence in the real world, in a society where people are trying to get along and that's hard enough. These Rabbis for sure have outplayed their useful existence.
54. This has to be a "put on"
StevieT ,   USA   (07.04.11)
This kind of primitive religiosity can not possibly exist in a leading edge Nation.I expect it from the 13th century leaning Ayatollahs, but not from my own people.
55. The cow and the schohet- to cut or not to cut
Jacob   (07.04.11)
Another idiot in the hassidic hiearchy a certain Zilberstein. What a stupid, vile reply that only a rebbe can make. "A bloody self inflicted wound would atone for the people of Israel ". Mr. rebbe, would cutting off your Schmuk atone for the people of Israel as well.
56. Welcome to the Teliban state !
Haim ,   Tel aviv   (07.04.11)

57. Clearly demonstrates religion belongs in the dark ages
Avi ,   Israel   (07.04.11)
We have to be thankfull to Rabbi Yitzchok Zilberstein as he clearly demonstrates that the so called religious life style has no place in the year 2011 and clearly belongs in the medevil practices section of a musseum.
58. Whose checking the rabbis ?
Haim ,   Tel aviv   (07.04.11)
No one it seems.
59. If true, turnabout is fair play
Israel   (07.04.11)
