I was part of a delegation representing Irish Jews and Christians who met with Irish Foreign Affairs Minister Eamon Gilmore this week to present him with our Petition of 1,431 signatories from Irish Citizens calling on the Minister to exert pressure on the Hamas regime in the Gaza Strip to grant Gilad Shalit the rights due to him under international law and to help secure his release The Minister received and appreciated the Petition and said that he had spoken up already for Gilad’s rights but that he will now do all the more. We highlighted that the International Red Cross had access to Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and that it was totally unacceptable for Hamas to continue to deny Gilad Shalit’s rights to a visit from them. The Minister expressed his full agreement with this. We highlighted how Amnesty Ireland was also backing this request. The Minister promised to take up the case in other international circles.
