1. If the gas technician and the metal thief
jason white ,   afula, israel   (06.17.11)
are guilty, then should be hung in public. Israel needs the death penalty.
2. it should be forbidden to publish names of suspects
Noa ,   Israel   (06.17.11)
at least at such an early stage. It is simply not ethical.
3. #1: Yes, the Death Penalty for Murder or Terrorism
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (06.17.11)
However, you cannot execute people for negligence or even homicide without "premeditation", Just think for a second that if you were to execute every person who caused the death of another you would have a very busy hangman! Every driver who caused the death of someone in a road accident or other mishap and was found to be at fault would hanged in the local village square. No, that is vengeance and not justice. Of course the sentences imposed by our courts are ridiculously light like the drunk who killed a woman and her child in a car smash and was sentenced to 13 months imprisonment which was reduced to 8 months probably because he was a senior member of the Israeli Bar! I am a proponent of the Death Penalty for Murder and Terrorism but the accused must be found guilty without ANY doubt whatsoever. We have seen so many mistakes in the USA and the UK and with the Death Penalty there is no room for mistakes. There is no "undo" button!
4. Negligence leading to the death of a
jason white ,   afula, israel   (06.17.11)
person or persons should have the death penalty. If a mechanic tells a person their auto brakes are okay and he is involved in a fatal auto accident. The mechanic is guilty. If the gas technician did nothing to stop the gas problem and alert the authorities, he is guilty. If the metal thief stole gas pipes and caused the leak, he is guilty. There should be a death penalty to stop this. The same with terrorists, pedophiles, rapists and traitors. If someone is caught in the act, there is no need for a trial.

It is not only ethical, it is necessary. When law enforcement has a fix on a specific bad guy, it is incumbent upon them to relay the information to the public in the event anyone sees, has seen or has any information on that person. Bad guys talk, often boast, about their crimes to others. The cops want those people to come forward. You would not see these names if the cops did not have a strong level of certainty regarding these guys. They don't want to be sued. The first consideration is the victims, Noa, whatever it takes. You don't go easy on a sure suspect.
6. #5: I agree with you.
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (06.17.11)
We must protect the victims and we must also lower the age of protection of the youth. It is ridiculous that a 16 year commits a murder or a rape and his name is hidden for ever! The question is where do you draw the line. In Israel a minor under the age of 12 is "assumed" incapable of committing a crime. This is nonsense! In some countries the age limit is 7 or 8. Youth crime is on the increase and must be dealt with. As for hiding the identity of alleged offenders, well, here there is cause for debate. You arrest the wrong person and he is immediately branded a criminal because people say "no smoke without fire" and next thing he is beaten up by a group vigilantes! In the USA a man was accused of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart and he died in jail from a heart attack and then they found the real perpetrator of the crime. We have to be careful but Justice must be done and seen to be done and the closed door policy of the courts and the unrealistic sentences passed down are not serving Justice and the people it is meant to serve and project!
7. #2: Many, many times the names are not published
Sharon ,   Israel   (06.17.11)
This case may indicate that available proof does indeed point to these men. The trouble is that when people are acquitted, not enough noise is made - once the excitement dies down, there isn't enough follow-up.

Did metal theft also cause the Ikea store fire?

I'm sure they'll get off lightly......
11. The culture of a chaplap attitude leads to this
Al   (06.17.11)
Where are the Yekes who helped build the country today? We are being invaded by a raghead mentality where if it feels good, do it. This leads to death and destruction... The entire western world is suffering from this, Israel included. No laws, no punishment, no permits, graft, nepositism and a general attitude of entitlement and neglect. Congragulations,,,you've it to 'modern' nation status.

14. gas leak shut off protection
yaacov ,   jerusalem   (06.17.11)
all buildings and gas appliances should have an automatic gas leak shutoff unit to prevent this from happening. It is not an expensive unit and already is in newer stoves. May HaShem protect us from our emenies and ourselves.
15. what else is new
Mohson   (06.17.11)
israelis keep dying at the ands of the non druse moslem arabs. kedar and ettinger have a better idea and its obvious in a final arrangement, no jews will live in palestine and no arabs save loyal druse and some bedouin should live in israel. they have to be repatriated in palestine jordan end of story. Beilin and peres can take oslo and shove it up, a totally useless agreement.
16. To: No. 10
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.17.11)
Why would you think that? They're Jews, not Arabs; if indeed guilty, they will be severely punished.
17. With Jews like these...
Baruch ,   Marin County, CA   (06.17.11)
With Jews like these, who needs enemies? Nuf sed.

You raise some good points, and I agree that minors have it way too easy when it comes to crime. After the age of accountability, they have no good excuse and should be tried as adults. As for the younger ones, where are their parents, and why do they allow their children to behave this way? Slapping the parents with sizeable fines and/or minimum one-year (no parole) prison sentences would probably get their attention. The only time hiding the identity of an alleged offender works is if it involves a stakeout where enough incriminating evidence is gathered to prepare a (hopefully) slam-dunk case for the prosecution. It is a string of problems from enforcing existing laws to tougher sentences. Prisons should never be country clubs. They should be places that terrify people at the thought of going. I don't buy into "criminal rights." They give up their rights when they commit a crime. The courts are too lenient, and the bleeding heart judges should be thrown out. To bust your butt getting a conviction only to have a wimp judge essentially give the defendant a ticket to walk is just wrong. Funny you should mention Elizabeth Smart. I always thought her father was involved in a very unsavory way and that the whole family was covering up for him lest they lose their pristine standing in the comunity. Too many things about that case just don't add up.
19. They have been charged
Ali ,   Scotland   (06.18.11)
but not found guilty. Please consider these men may not have caused this tragedy. The probem is when the death penalty is used it cant be undone and its barbaric.
20. #19 Ali - They haven't been charged.
Devorah   (06.18.11)
They were arrested "on suspicion of..." Big difference.
21. Suspects in Netanya Gas tragedy
Spencer ,   Israel,   (06.21.11)
This appears to be another case of the police acting too hastily. If the one suspect was caughty redahanded stealing the copper piping then he should have been arrested. But, there appears to be no evidence whatsoever as to the cause of the explosion and in particular to any negligence on the part of the gas technician so his arrest appears to have been far too hasty and way out of line.
