31. anthem
colin   (06.30.11)
The traiters of university are the lowest scun in Israel The minister of finance must stop all funding of the Israeli taxpayer to the university !! Let these professors go to the arab whom they respect to get funding
32. Israel
ralpH ,   caesarea   (06.30.11)
you like it or your quit!
33. Haifa U
Yoel ,   OSSINING, NY 10562   (06.30.11)
The professors' rationalization is just plain hogwash. The attempted distinction between civil society and governmental functions is totally inapposite. Why can't the Hatikva been sung at "civil " functions? I dare say that up until now, the Hatikva was in fact sung at Haifa U. Did the professors ever consider that the ommission of the Hatikva was offensive to the Jewish graduates? It is a question of good manners on the part of the Arab graduates. No one forces them to participate during the Hatikva. But they could have the good manners to stand respectivelyalbeit silently. It is the same situation as when a non-Jew goes to a shul. We don't expect him to participate in the prayers, but good manners dictate that he stands when the rest of the congregation does.
34. not playin the anthem
Lifka ,   France   (06.30.11)
I am French. The French anthem has been written during French Revolution when France was in war with Austria. It says "that a an impure blood Drinks our furrows" when the anthem was booed during a match it made a huge national scandal. So I guess what would happen if officials had refused to play it at a ceremony not to hurt the nobles or the descendants of Austrians or another category that might be offended. Many national anthems glorifying historical ethnic or religion majority that built the country without anyone wonders if it will hurt the minority. There is really only the Israelis to have this kind of complex
35. Not a penny to the Haredi Yeshivot
Michael ,   Haifa   (06.30.11)
Not one hypocritical talkbacker here has raised that issue. They do not sing the Hatikva at their cermonies, not out of concern about the their "Arab students", but because they are mostly anti-Zionist and hate the State from which they milk money.
36. load of worm tongue if you ask me...
Ypip ,   Canada   (06.30.11)
37. Why Israel needs a loyalty oath - in USA, they'd be fired!
Dr. L. Brnd ,   San Diego, USA   (06.30.11)
Public university officials and faculty in US states are required to lake a loyalty oath, like all other state employees, "...to defend the state against all enemies, foreign and domestic...". Any law school official at a state college here in California who decided not to play the "Star Spangled Banner" at a graduation ceremony because it might offend Arabs (or the British, since it refers to our heroic War of 1812 against them) would find himself de-tenured and fired within days. It is a direct violation of our state loyalty oath provisions. And what kind of law is Haifa University teaching to its students if its faculty claim that the graduation (from a taxpayer-funded state school) is a "civil ceremony", not a "national ceremony". Or a "religious ceremony"????? Medinat Yisroel means "state of the Jewish People" in Hebrew. Israel is a collective noun for the Jewish People. The words "Nefesh Yehudi" in the anthem refers to the historic attachment of the Jewish people to the land. It doesn't exclude or reject anybody by not mentioning them. These faculty should be fired, not only for disloyalty to the state, but for sheer incompetence. Israel needs its own Constitution, too - so its laws are Israeli, not a hodge-podge of Ottoman-era edicts, Mandatory British statutes, English common law, and whatever the leftist Supreme Court decides to invent on its whim. All taught to Israeli law students by mindless boobs who think like clerks and those who banned Hatikvah.
38. Illogical behavior
Rozie   (06.30.11)
Only STUPID, self hating Jews could make such a decision. Let the Arabs study in Iran or Syria if they have a problem with Israel as a Jewish State. According to this logic, in the USA the National Anthem should not be played whenn American Indian are graduating from a certain University. This is a disgrace. I hope all donors STOP making donations to The Muslim University of Haifa.
39. slinging of mud
daze ,   US   (06.30.11)
When you are right, it is'nt mudslinging. In this case it is only your detractors love of Israel. You guys are the defenders of legalese. So touching, how you protect arab students from "Hatikvah", you guys are sort of like human shields for them
40. national pride
concerned jew   (06.30.11)
Here's an idea, how about we cancel the national anthem here in the USA so as not to offend the Native Americans! Good lord Israel, show some national pride!
41. I am ashamed by my colleagues of Haifa U
Yossef   (06.30.11)

izzie irgun ,   usa   (06.30.11)

43. What happened to us???
Nahum Korda ,   Ein Ziwan, Israel   (06.30.11)
Singing the national anthem at a publicly funded educational institution is offending? A uniformed person serving his country was banned from a restaurant because his uniform is offensive to customers? Something is deeply wrong with Israel today.
44. singing of "Hatikvah"
daze ,   US   (06.30.11)
arabs don't have to sing "Hatikvah", but they do have to lipsynch it LOL
45. same thing
david   (06.30.11)
in tzfat the university there are 95 percent Arabs whom a big part of them don't even live in tzfat.
46. Time to boycott Haifa University
Ezer   (06.30.11)
Shame on these professors who have sunk so low as to not sing our national anthem. We live in Israel and it is high time that all residents accept the fact that it is a Jewish state with a Jewish National Anthem. If anyone does not like it, please leave. In the meantime, boycott the University and fire these lunatic professors. Lieberman, where are you? We need a loyalty oath as well, especially in Haifa University.
47. everything to all religious yeshivot
danni   (06.30.11)
35 you must understand that the world is running thanks to torah study! your milk money is from getting blessed from torah study. if you hate so much people who are not like you, it's your loss especially your health can go down the drain. end!

hatikva is dead in this generation. don't think your kids care about this song. i pity your youth very much.
49. SHAME !
Dave ,   Bs.Aires-Argentina   (06.30.11)
As an Argentinian Citizen and a proud Jew too, I´m ashamed by the behaviour of this TRAITORS to the State of Israel. As an example for this non-sense fact, I tell you all, that here in Argentina, our children and grandchildren that attend to our network of Argentinian-Jewish Schools (Often Trilingual Spanish-Hebrew-English Institutions), when we have Jewish or Argentinian national or religious holidays, they sing every time first the Argentine National Anthem, and THEN, ALWAYS the Hatikvah, without any people, ( Jewish or Christian) offended or upset by this fact. It is INCREDIBLE that in our Proper Jewish Country, the State of Israel, these LEFT WING TREACHEROUS PROFESSORS, prevent the Hatikvahto be sung. It is a big SHAME to all the Universities of Israel that support this infamous Act of Treason.
50. The anthem is too Jewish for them.
(06.30.11)
what a bunch of self hating Jews
51. How silly..
Paul ,   London England   (06.30.11)
... to be upset by such a reasonable decision. It is about time someone made a stand against singing the Anthem at inappropriate occasions. Anyone who really feels the bizarre urge to sing the Anthem or wave the Flag on the occasion of passing an examination is free to do so but one would hope that he or she would be polite enough to do so in private.
52. sing both anthems
ohAD   (06.30.11)
who cares? isn't the state trying to be like like all nations anyway? end
53. yes indeed
(06.30.11)
plenty of ahrabs in haifa
54. Shame, fire those traitors. They dont belong.
Mel ,   Chicago   (06.30.11)
55.  Professors back university that cut anthem
Jonny ,   Modiin, Israel   (06.30.11)
Anyone benefiting from employment or education funded by taxes from the same State whose anthem they deny should consider working or studying elsewhere. The insult here is all theirs and any students insulted by the singing of the national anthem.
56. Leftists= Lack of integrity and honesty, believe the BS
B.S. ,   Haifa University   (06.30.11)
57. Medinat Israel
alex ,   istanbul turkey   (06.30.11)
It's Medinat Isra'el you mispronouncing Ashkenazi illiterate. Yisroel is maybe your dad's name, but there is no state named thus :D
58. @57 alex
jeremy greene ,   eretz yisrael   (07.01.11)
alex, no need for bashing participants in this talkback on the condition of whether one is ashkenazi or sfaradi. at the end of it all, we are all jews. if you are referring to israel as a medina, then it is medinat yisrael.
59. ha ha best democracy ever
shir ,   rishon le zion   (07.02.11)
this is a source of pride - not the decision "not to offend arab students" that's sickening, but the nature of the debate is. I and others, by the way, would boycott our uni if they wouldn't play the anthem at our graduation ceremony
60. next will be the israeli flag?
