Isn't it a well known muslim saying - 'First Saturday and then Sunday'. Meaning they want rid of the Jew first and then the Christian? Understand that this is a spiritual war - first and foremost. Of course these people don't want Sunday revered as a day of rest. The rest of the world trades through Friday anyway. It's a global market now - working on Friday's makes perfect sense. Sheesh!!

The reasons for this change in weekend status is not religious but economical. There is also a lot of research proving that people are more productive on a 5 day week. I always thought that Arab towns have their own ordinances about this. Whenever we drive thru an Arab town here in the north on Shabbat, I always see children going home from school. I assumed that the their day off is either Friday or Sunday depending upon their religion. Muslims and Christians are not required to not work on their sabbath as Jews are (orthodox), but you will find that some Muslims close their shops on Friday and some Christians on Sunday. There are many businesses in the 'Arab sector' that are open all days of the week too.

Ammm.....Muslims in all other Western countries seem to manage perfectly fine with the weekend being Sat and Sun...Additionally, Friday is usually a FULL work day, so to get half a day off is pretty good! I can't see how there argument holds any weight!

And if Israel wants another day of rest( as most Jews don't work on Shabbos) that's their business. Israel belongs to the Jewish people, it is their homeland and they make the rules. I can't think of one good thing that muslims have done in Israel, can you?

Jews live in countries where the Sabbat is not respected, and they manage with it. If not, then they go and live somewhere it suils them. I never heard about a jew asking a government to please him. Moslems on the other hand live in Europe, US, and other western countries and they never complained about Sunday off. they just manage and stick to these countries. So, why not here???

Friday isn't really a day of rest because people work in the morning and after work they are preparing for dinner etc. Saturday although it isa day of rest everything closes down and for Jews who want to keep Shabbat there are only limited ways they can keep it. If they want to go out somewhere with the family they can't drive or even take a bus if it was running because it would be breaking Shabbat. There are alot of people who keep Shabbat its not something limited to a haredi minority. Sunday can be a totally secular day off work which people can enjoy without any religious interfearance. If the orthodox want to keep Shabbat on Saturday they can and Sunday they can go out spend abit of family time together enjoying themselves. In the Christian countries whilst Sunday is their holy day they also have Saturday which has no religious signifiance to them its just a day off work to relax and enjoy themselves. In Israel Sunday could be the same, nothing to do with religion just abit of time out. Israeli's already work longer hours than in Europe & the US so I think people would appreciate some time out on Sunday. Once the idea of a full weekend begins individuals and business will get used to it and learn to work around it so it won't be any greata disruption. Right now we have never had it and nobody knows what to expect.

Debra Anne, I appreciate you looking to Torah for help on the subject. On Shabbat, our holiest day, we go to Shul and devote the day to Hashem and rest. Having Sunday off as well is, I believe a good thing. Having Sunday off allows Frum Jews a day to take care of chores and errands without interrupting the work week. It also allows those of the Christian faith to worship on the day they call Sabbath, Sunday for their worshiop without interrupting their work week. Muslims living in Israel have been making do under the current Shabbat only so I fail to see how this is an issue for discussion from them, except that they tend to complain about everything and nothing at all.

Any business that wishes to stay open will be able to, but any business that wants to close, including government offices, banks, etc, will close. Giving the nation an extra day off will result in much less stress, more family time, more vacationing, more relaxing around the house. There is no good reason for a 6 day work week. If the Arabs want to continue to work on Sunday, nobody is stopping them. All the more space at the beach!

Nour Where exactly does politics fit into this? Its a proposal to give all Israel's an extra day to themselves rather than having to work 6 days a week. Let people have a little family time and relax. If arab businesses want to open on Sunday they will be allowed, it will be a matter between employee and employer not the state howver Sunday will be a day when employers cannot force people to come in. You guys want to work go ahead although I think most people will choose to stay at home on Sunday once they get used to it ORDINARY arabs included.

If the whiners don't like the one tiny Jewish state of Israel, they have 56 Muslim countries to choose to go and live in.
