1. Tukey is guilty.
Adam ,   Golan Heights Israel   (07.07.11)
Turkey provoked this whole incident and aftermath. Turkey demanded the UN commission. It is up to Turkey to make amends. All that said, no one has the right to withhold the findings of the report from the public. If they do, I will attempt raise support to sue the UN and our gov't for the release of the unedited report.
2. Turkey is humiliated
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (07.07.11)
According to Reuters, Turkey is also furious that the Palmer Report had a very different finding than the United Nations Human Rights Council Report in the immediate aftermath of the failed voyage of the MAVI MARMARA in 2010. Probably has to do with the fact that the United Nations Human Rights Council is one of the most corrupt United Nations agency and the Palmer Commission was honest and impartial. I'm sure Turkey is very embarrassed by the fact that Palmer found clear and incontrovertible evidence that the Turkish government is in bed with the IHH, a terrorist organization, and that the Turkish government actively promoted the flotilla. No apology; no compensation for the families of the nine dead terrorists. Turkey is REALLY having a bad day.
3. Turkey asked for the delay, just...
Jonathan   (07.07.11)
Turkey asked for the delay, just to earn more time without it, so that the 2nd Flotilla would arrive. Let's cut the games - it's TOO obvious. UN: The world is not that stupid. Your credibility is below any standard...
4. Stop blaming Turkey
Omri ,   Israel   (07.07.11)
Erdogan wanted to get elected so he did a big fuss with Israel to get the anti Israel votes. Now his elected and things are back to normal. If Turkey wants to be a regional power then she not only needs to spread influence into Syria, Gaza and Lebanon, but also Israel. Only by doing that will Turkey be able to claim the eastern Mediterranean sea. I'm sure you all know how strategically important this little dot called Israel is, even only geographically speaking. Long story short, Turkey need Israel and Israel needs Turkey. Elections are over and the alliance can be reestablished. btw, I'm sure Russia has a big part of this. Sense Obama Russia finally has hope to get Israel under Russian influence instead of American. Turkey fighting Israel will only decrease any chances of future corporations.
5. Ban agrees to delay Flotilla report
Spencer ,   Israel   (07.08.11)
The only reason he agreed was because it exonerated Israel and this is not to his liking.
6. Flotilla Observations
M Carr ,   Baltimore, MD   (07.08.11)
I wish to share some observations and suggestions. If the true findings rather than some watered-down version of the Palmer Report is released Erdogan's complicity in the Marmara incident will be seen as one of the biggest political blunders in recent history . The way Turkish society reacts to their humiliation should be very entertaining. I wonder how the UN will resolve the contradictions between the Palmer and UNHRC Reports, or if they will even try? Someone should seriously research the process that led to this fiasco. Does anyone believe that if Israel was found to be at fault that there would be a delay in the release of the findings? "The commission found that Israel acted too soon in its raid of the Marmara,"...WHAT??? Far too few of the Islamists and their sympathyzers will learn anything valuable from the flotilla fiasco. With this in mind I will demonstrate my good will toward the Islamist by offering this observation. Movements based primarily on emotion and few facts have little staying power. You can take that to the bank.
7. To: No. 4
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (07.08.11)
Israel doesn't need Turkey; particularly since Turkey is moving closer to Iran. Moreover, Turkey's influence in the region is waning and they will quite likely be forced out of NATO. NATO cannot tolerate a member state that has close ties to Iran. The Turkish economy is in the toilet; when they lose all those lucrative NATO bases, that will push them over the edge ...... the big winner will be Greece and perhaps one or two of the former Soviet republics in Central Asia.
8. 4-of course...Turkey is Turkey.

I often enjoy your thoughtful posts especially when they are filled with interesting detail. But this time I'm going to disagree: Israel needs (and deserves!) every ally it can get, and the MFA philosophy is to constantly engage and work very hard toward cooperation. Notice how Turkey pulled itself and its IHH out of the Flotilla leaving the few remaining boats to founder in Greece? Our MFA worked very hard to achieve that result. Press was minimal outside Israel, and most of all we didn't have to put our young men and women in uniform into harm's way. Go MFA! Did you know that Iran was once an important ally and a good friend to Israel? We lost Iran in 79, there is no denying that, and that was a significant setback for us: one that eventually led to iran's funding of Syria, Hamas, and Hezbollah. Diplomacy can accomplish things that even an iron dome cannot. I find it encouraging that Turkey actually cares about not being linked to the IHH, that it actually wants to work together with Israel on a report and that it did what an ally ought to during this latest non- flotilla. Little acts but meaningful nonetheless. Israel has enough enemies, every friend is important and for all its missteps I don't think Turkey is lost just yet. More importantly neither does our MFA, and those guys (and women) do amazing things under difficult circumstances.

if Israel does not need Turkey as you claim then it would demand that the unedited Palmer report be released without further delay There seems to be little difference between Palmers report and Israel's own Turkel report But rather than demand release of the report Israel is bending over backwards to appease Turkey by having the report buried It would be hard to find clearer proof than this of the fact that Israel needs Turkey. .

Actually the Turkish economy is booming. That's one reason why Erdogan was reelected. For need, its not exactly vital but its true there is a lot to grain from it. You can say "want" instead of "need" if you insist. Why do we "want" turkey? Geographically Turkey is placed next to all our worst enemies. She is very close and good trade can do a lot. She is the only Muslim country with European roots included in the culture, so reasoning is much more possible with the Islamic world through Turkey. If Turkey really does become a regional power she will slowly be a rival with Iran because Iran is doing the same. Turkey is by far with Russia in the Russian-US rivalry. Sense Obama we know we may need alternatives to USA sometimes.

Sometimes its good that the public opinion doesn't write down the exact foreign policy. In Canada for example, the public opinions about Israel are extremely negative. But Canada is, nevertheless, one of Israel's closest friends. Seeing Turkey, unlike almost any other Muslim country, is very strong on the national part and less on the religious part, makes me believe the public opinion can still be change even without peace with the Palestinians. Right now the religious pan is increasing in Turkey but Turkey still has a strong historic background and European influence that can always turn things around.
15. @11 Anton: both Turkey and Israel disagree with you
joe ,   st louis usa   (07.08.11)
Fortunately! Our governments are working together as they had in the past for many years. They are working to publish a report that helps to build a better, safer future for both countries. In this era of finger pointing, it's easy to forget that building a better future is what the UN is supposed to be all about.
