1. Checks and balances
Leon Zacharowicz ,   New York, NY   (07.11.11)
Leaving aside the merits of this particular bill, give situation should give us pause. In the U.S., there are checks and balances. The legislature decides on laws and generally the Supreme Court interprets whether the facts or in some cases the law itself is "constitutional." Without a constitution, the high court of the land can arrogate to itself the power to decide on whether bills passed by the legislature or policies enacted by the executive branch meet its standards. This concentration of power in the hands of a few people, none of whom were elected to office, is dangerous.

5. Not deferred...
Orly ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.11.11)
Article reads "As a result, Netanyahu demanded that the Knesset vote on the controversial "boycott bill" which was set to be put through its second and third reading, be postponed." However, an hour ago (between 6 and 6:30) the radio reported the PM stating that it "will be held today, as planned."
6. #1. Leon: Vacuous propaganda
Tom ,   USA   (07.11.11)
American activist judges used to interpret the old, ambiguous Constitutional text according to their political leaning. They can invalidate the will of millions of people with the vote of only one man. Stalin did similar thing before. When the same text - the Constitution - can be interpreted two contradictory way the whole process is a farce. Criminal and civil laws are strict, whereas the US Constitution is like a ball game between leftist and conservative judges: majority wins. As Pres. Clinton once said: ""It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is.""" Checks and balances...yeah, in one's imagination ....

Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (07.11.11)
We boycott non-Orthodox synagogues. We boycott churches. The list goes on. Where will the law state "Oh, we didn't mean that"? So when do the arrests begin?
12. as a right - wing israeli i hope this bill won'y pass
right wing israeli   (07.11.11)
thats right we need to protect ouselves, but we also need to pretect the full democracy. what we can do is just buy more products from israel in the green line and out the green line.
13. #12: Please don't call yourself right-wing

14. Sounds good!!
Markos ,   Ethiopia   (07.11.11)
How long can a State tolerate dissent within it's own territory, it's about time that this bill passes!
15. @#11: Yes, it is a two edged sword!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (07.11.11)
This law could be used in reverse! Anyone in Israel boycotting something for idealistic, religious or political reasons could find him/herself involved in very costly litigation! This law shows that the right wing is so obsessed with its power that it loses sight of reality. Israel does not have a Constitution but we have the Basic Law and the Basic Law is what makes Israel into a democracy and sets Israel aside from its neighbors who massacre its own citizens to stay in power. The guardian of the Basic Law is the Knesset and when the Knesset fails it is the High Court Of Justice. This Law is silly and the proposer is even sillier! There are far better ways to deal with the vicious left wing who malign and damage Israel at every opportunity although, the extreme right wing doesn't do such a bad job in hurting Israel either!
16. Israel becoming more like Communist Russia by the day.
C.C.   (07.11.11)
May G-d save us from these Communist self-elected-for-life lawmakers.
17. This is Evil
Eli Wapniarski ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (07.11.11)
If this law comes to the Knesset I will never ever vote Likud again. It is unconscionable to stigmatize individuals or organizaitons engaged in peaceful political and/or economic protest as offending the legal system (especially in a in a democracy). What's next??? I don't like the government and I vote for a different party..... Whadya gonna do throw me in jail???? or worse??? That an American educated PM of Israel would sanction such a bill is beyond the pale
18. That's How Democracies Function
Eli Wapniarski ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (07.11.11)
Without dissent democracy dies and totalitarianism begins its march to destroy everything under its influence.
19. how would we be able to boycott chease???
right- wing israeli   (07.11.11)
or any israeli company who steals from the public?? it's not agood bill!!! and i still call myself right- wing cause this is what I am. but i'm not stupied unlike other people....
20. Go ahead and do it.
Moshe ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.11.11)
Everybody already knows that this is a racist, oppressive Knesset that has no regard for fairness, justice, human rights, decency. So pass the bill. It is only one in a long, repugnant chain. G-d willing, this, too, shall pass one day and Israel will return to being the nation envisioned by its founders- and, far more importantly, by Hashem.
21. John @ 2, Bibi is worried about Israel. That is why he has
leo ,   usa   (07.11.11)
to consider all the angles. I am not saying whether he is right or wrong for I do not know the true picture, but I do not doubt his intentions.
22. Leon @ 1, currently Obama is using so called czars to
leo ,   usa   (07.11.11)
circumvent checks and balances. It was done before Obama too, but he raised to the levels never seen before. This kind of practice must be restricted to very rare and very important cases only and these czars must be answerable to Congress before The President.
