1. The first step towards fascism
Gabriel ,   Tel Aviv   (07.13.11)
This law is completely undemocratic in every sense. Someone says "boycott the settlements" and you think it's OK to fine them (and you don't even need to show that you were hurt by the statements) The purpose of the bill is entirely about stifling debate and free speech and trying to punish people. Once again Israel looks awful in the eyes of the rest of the world where bills like this would never happen. Israel makes yet another step to becoming the Jewish Iran and the idiots applaud.
2. my advice to this man: google "democracy"
rachel ,   new york, ny   (07.13.11)
3. A well written and well conceived article, Mr.
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (07.13.11)
Levin. It puts into perspective the need for the new law as well as the petulance of the opposition to it.
4. Great article!
AJ - Raalte   (07.13.11)
Thanks, Yariv Levin. Just one thing: this new law, called the Boycott Law by friend and foe alike, is of course in reality an ANTI-Boycott Law.
5. Glad he mentioned the Supreme Court.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (07.13.11)
A handful of radical leftist judges cannot be allowed to shove their ideology down our throats. While recognizing the principle of an independent judiciary, the selection process for judges must be changed. Candidates for high judicial office should be nominated by the Prime Minister & require confirmation by the Knesset. The whole idea of ''judicial activism'' should be junked. The judicial system has usurped far too much authority.
6. #1 Gabriel, Tel Aviv.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (07.13.11)
Fascism? You mean like arresting rabbis for endorsing a book on Jewish law? By the way, did you even read the article? Seemingly not. Anyway, if you really think that Israel is in any way becoming like Iran, I suggest you escape, perhaps you could go live in Gaza or Syria or maybe Egypt, I hear the weather is nice during the Arab Spring. And, Israel only looks awful in the eyes of rest of the world among those that already hate us. What we do or do not do makes no difference.
7. democracy
yaacovic ,   Melbourne, Australia   (07.13.11)
Democracy is when decision making is in the hands of the majority. However when the majority decides to silence the minority, democracy has lost its viability and essence. Pretty soon the majority will be legislating that it cannot do wrong.
8. democracy
sharon ,   Israel   (07.13.11)
Not every decision made in a democracy is democratic. That's why there are other bodies to supervise like the Supreme Court and basic laws. This law is an attack on democracy in every sense of the word.
9. well said.. in a true democracy people are not discriminated
(07.13.11)
against based on there place of residence/ we are all equal under the law!
10. The right to oppose
Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot   (07.13.11)
To oppose the government’s actions is a basic right in any democracy. Every dictator in history has put down opposition; some such as Stalin had mass murders of any opposition. Calling for a boycott is an opposition action beyond a simple protest. If the law is only against calling for a boycott in public it is at best marginal. Can someone boycott by their actions but not call for a boycott publicly without being fined or jailed? Can a public employee voice opposition to a government action? If the answer to these questions is “no” then there is no question that the law is an antidemocratic law and deserves to be stricken by the Supreme Court. Israel is being pushed to antidemocratic laws by the introduction of a law to investigate the so called “left”. Democracy is a very fragile thing and all right thinking people must oppose all attempts to infringe on democratic principles.
11. new law
Michael ,   Haifa   (07.13.11)
This law protects the economic interests of illegal settlements. It is a primitive law drafted by primitive "legislators"
12. GREAT START! Now it needs to be implemented. Left does NOT
Hebrew ,   Israel   (07.13.11)
equal democratic in the slightest. listen to the majority, that is the democratic way. quit interfering with force just because you (the left) crony-style own the courts, the media, etc.
13. Leftist courts, media, academics hysteria & undemocratic
Jordan ,   Is Palestine   (07.13.11)
trampling of the mjaoiryt is nearing an end. you took our children, you forced oslo on us, you hate transparency laws, so many things you are doing that are undemocratic and ruthless. how long can a growing majority take it. we are seeing the answer unfold before us.
14. Anti-boycott legislation has NOTHING to.....
Jerry ,   The Netherlands   (07.13.11)
do with alleged undemocratic stifling of freedom of expression. Boycotting is going way beyond freedom of expression and is past the end of dialogue, negotiations and good-will, it is warfare and has to be countered to SAVE democacy and freedom of speech.
15. The insanity of the right....
Mikesailor ,   Miami, FL   (07.13.11)
Only in the Looking-Glass state of Israel, can a blatantly undemocratic bill suppressing freedom of speech be so wholeheatedly approved. This law doesn't really prevent boycotts, even of the settlements. And boycotts are wholeheartedly accepted if they are against haredi or Arabs or myriad other entities. It suppresses the ADVOCACY of boycotts but only of certain select groups. As such, right-wing fascist wannabes wholeheartedly approve. For speech, especially unpopular speech, must be suppressed at all costs. Why are the right-wingers so afraid of voices disagreeing with their own? Why is the opposition so feared? The 'left' has not been in political power since Rabin. And is life in Israel so much better since? Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result is insanity. Must be something in the water.
16. #15 So you haven't read your own laws then.
Phil ,   Ireland   (07.13.11)
17. The United States has had an anti-boycott law since the 70's
Sam ,   New York   (07.14.11)
I don't see anyone complaining about that!
18. Israel will no longer take orders from far left poseurs.
Chaim ,   Israel   (07.14.11)
This article is well written and spot on. Israel is a centre right country and the values of the vast majority must be adhered to. As Levin notes, it is ludicrous for a small number of Post Zionists to make decisions detrimental to Israel. Yet they have been doing so for decades. Israel will no longer take orders from far left poseurs.
19. Movements that advocate starving Jews
Lee Kaplan ,   Berkeley, USA   (07.14.11)
The Boycott movement is not "free speech'. It is the Arab extension of the Nazi final solution. Boycott and divestment was first used by Nazis in 1933 and then the Arab League after 1948. The Arab attempt to intellectualize it as a democratic principle of free government and democracy is to sell this pernicious final solution in the West. It is the PFLP intellectuals of the communist party promoting Stalinism as a form of democracy to persuade the ignorant. Congrats to the Knesset for acting like adults. May this new law finally bankrupt Dalit Baum, the mental deviant who would starve the children of Israel to aid her enemies to destroy the state. The sexual perverts and other degenerates who make up the boycott movement will no longer regard this as fun and games. Thank goodness Israel finally is defending itself. Next step should be for the Knesset to ask the US government to enforce anti-boycott laws in the US already on the books that are ignored. American colleges are the source for de-legitimizing Israel and this hads spread to Israel's colleges also.
