1. Int'l community?
Adam ,   Golan Heights Israel   (07.13.11)
I really do wish our elected leaders would put the opinions of their voters ahead of the opinions of the int'l community. The int'l community is ambivalent towards Israel at best, while downright hostile at worst. How many countries' leaders spend more time worrying about the opinions of other countries, instead of the people who put them where they are?
2. #1 Adam
Rachel ,   US   (07.13.11)
Exactly. Take care of your house regardless of the intl community. Do you think Obama cared about what the intl community thought of this pet project Obamacare?
3. To those fear mongers on the Left
David T. ,   USA   (07.13.11)
What is just NOW being proposed for selecting a judge in Israel has been in effect in USA for years.
4. Law will allow justices chosen by the electorate...
Orly ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.13.11)
... where as for now they are appointed by a non-elected committee that without any doubt makes apointments based on political sides. This law is a true step toward democracy!
5. In the United States ....
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (07.13.11)
... the president is charged with appointing the federal judiciary (all levels -- to the District Courts, to the Courts of Appeal, to the U.S. Supreme Court -- but all appointments must be approved by the United States Senate. The appointments are reviewed by the Judiciary Committee first -- sometimes, the appointments are quashed right there -- before going to the full U.S. Senate for a vote. I do not understand why Israel cannot have a similar system, even though the Knesset is not bifurcated in the way the U.S. Congress is -- i.e., a House of Representatives and a Senate. Judicial appointments are important in countries that take courts seriously. There is nothing wrong with allowing the people -- i.e., the list members in the Knesset -- to participate in the process. In fact, it makes for a better process, and a better judiciary. Particularly when such appointments are made for life.
6. Anti-democratic elitists are howling.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (07.13.11)
If we could vote for individual politicians instead of this crappy Party List system, there would be a lot of unemployed politicians working in falafel stands where they belong. The intellectual level of the discussion is so pathetic, dishonest, & self-serving it's disgusting.
7. Method should duplicate US Constitutional requirements
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & NY   (07.13.11)
The mistake here is not that they want to have a say over who becomes a Supreme Court Judge, but that they say why and are not following existing examples like the US Constitution. The Constitution requires the president to submit nominations to the Senate for its advice and consent.
8. So justice appts not political now??? ROFL
Thinking Jew ,   Israel   (07.13.11)
9. Balance of powers
Naor ,   USA   (07.13.11)
Supreme Court should be selected by the committee with Kenesset approval. This will ensure the SC will no longer be a gang of politically motivated judges. With that said, the Kenesset should have no veto power of a more balanced SC's ruling as it gives the Legislative branch too much power.
10. justices
Bella ,   USA   (07.13.11)
And how are the justices appointed now? No politics are involved. Oh, sure!
11. Basics of democracy
Raphael ,   Netanya   (07.13.11)
Rely upon separation of the powers. A caste of coopted judges allows itself to interfere with the lawmakers, but complains that the Knesset is issuing laws that they do not fit to them. If we do not stop these pretentious self appointed rulers, we are heading towards a judges' dictatorship.
12. Dangerous only to enemies of Israel
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (07.13.11)
13. In The USA the President nominates Supreme Court Justices
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (07.13.11)
After which the Senate has to ratify the appointment. Of course, even in the "perfect" world of the United States, a right wing president would nominate a right wing judge to the Supreme Court as would a left wing president. The main criteria are the integrity of the Justices of the Supreme Court who are elected for life. Here in Israel we don't have the office of an executive president so the best alternative would be for Supreme Court Justices to be appointed by a Knesset Judicial Committee and then ratified by the Knesset. Not perfect but democratic. Judges should not be appointed for life but appointed for a certain period after which they must retire. This would prevent “lobbying” for re-election. We do not have a constitution but we have the Basic Law. The Knesset must be the Sovereign Authority of the State but subject to the Basic Law. In a democracy there have to be checks and balances and an independent Supreme Court is vital to ensure that the Basic Law is no pushed aside. However, changes must be made and the first is the is the power of the Judiciary to oppose the legislation of minimum sentences and this allow criminals to literally get away with murder and for judges to accept ludicrous plea bargains!
14. Asymptomof an unchallengeable, out-of-control supreme court
Dr. L. Brnd ,   San Diego, USA   (07.13.11)
Israel's Knesset should have control over supreme court nominees just as the US Congress does. The problem is that Israel has an out of control, extremist Supreme Court, whose unchallengeable decisions have created an non-representative, non-democratic tryannical ruling body that hijacks Israeli democracy. There must be a check-and-balance in operation to subject the court's actions to democratic rule. In the US, a law or government action deemed "unconstitutional" by the supreme court can be overridden by a constitutional amendment. However, Israel has no constition and no way of balancing the court actions. They make rulings based on a hodge-podge of Ottoman law, British Mandatory Law, Ehglish Common Law,and Israel's Basic Law as framed in its declaration of independence -- usually giving weight to whatever conforms to their pre-determined viewpoint. They even make ruling based on "international law" that Israel has not even ratified!!This has to stop. A 2/3 majority of sitting Knesset members (80 votes) should be sufficient to override and reverse any Supreme court ruling, civil, criminal or constitutional. Israelis can not enjoy true democracy until the ayatollahs running the Supreme Court are brought under the control of the voters, just as in the US.
15. Would it Kill YNET to at least PRETEND to be balanced?
Daniel ,   Formerly Israel   (07.14.11)
Yes I get it, this is a left-leaning paper. And yes they are actually, honestly believe that Elkin and Liberman are evil and should be stopped at all costs. But for God's sake this is a media outlet, and this article is in the NEWS section not the OPINION SECTION; can you at least do what every other paper does and pay lip-service to journalistic integrity? I mean even the extreme-right arutz-sheva website includes at least one statement in support of the leftist view-point on any political story it discusses. This point is almost always framed to show just how crazy they think the leftists are (acurately or not), but at least it demonstrates that the editor is willing to go through the motions of respectable journalism.
16. And I assume the headline meant to read intER-camp rivalry
Daniel ,   Formelry Israel   (07.14.11)
17. Actually the title should have been ntRA-camp rivalry
Daniel ,   Formerly Israel   (07.14.11)
since Ynet is so giddy about the fact they got someone in the Likud (besides Dan Meridor) to express reservations about a rightwing bill
18. to nr. 2.
justice for all ,   world/planet earth   (07.14.11)
the project obamacare as you call it has nothing to do with the international community. it is purely an american, internal, domestic and national affair what the americans have to solve or not in their own country. the americans are the boss in their own country and they mind their own us-business, just as any other people in their own country. you are the boss in your own house and iam the boss in my own house etc.
19. why does Supreme Court lean to the left now?
Lemmings Hotline ,   sd usa   (07.14.11)
