Abbas doesn't need to go begging if he wants to get the numbers in the General Assembly he has that in the bag. The problem is whilst the General Assembly can create a non binding resolution to create a palestinian state it can't become legal until it passes the Security Council where the US has a resolution. Abbas is hoping if he can gather enough international support then Obama will feel under pressure not to follow through with his threat to use the veto. Obama loves to please others and her hates Israel and thats what Abbas is counting on. The EU is divided and are right now trying to do a deal with Abbas if the planned resolution is worded rightly then the EU can take a united position backing the palestinians so we have to assume the EU will vote in favor. Russia, South America and the Islamic world will all go with the palestinians so Abbas is not playing such a stupid tactic. We just have to hope that with an election campaign and a Republican controlled Congress Obama will be willing to put aside his desire to be loved by the rest of the world and be willing to make himself unpopular by using the veto.

As it stands, the PA doesn't comply with the UN Charter. So long as the Palestinian National Charter is not changed to eliminate the threats against Israel, the PA is in violation of the UN Charter. If the General Assembly ignores this and recognizes a "Palestinian state", they are simply declaring for the world to see that the UN is nothing but a farce. Should this happen, all the members voting against should withdraw from this useless organization and the US should cancel the lease on UN offices in New York. If the UN (what's left of it) insists on admitting a country with openly declared genocidal ambitions, apartheid policies and legal inequality written into its "constitution", let them set up office in an appropriate venue... Tripoli or Damascus. I guarantee that UN personnel will be looking for new jobs within a week.
