31. Are we now living in Israstan?
Yitzhak ,   Israel   (08.09.11)
Have the Taliban taken over? Time for Haredim to realize they are living in 21st century Israel, not 1st century Judea. Constitution, NOW!
32. 'Tram ticket? We don't serve women here'
David ,   San Francisco CA   (08.09.11)
Here's an idea. Dispense with the ticket booths and install machines where you can buy your ticket/pass. Set the machines up so that you can buy one ticket, a day pass, a weekly pass, or a monthly pass using cash, a credit card, or a debit card. Also make the tickets/passes rechargeable for ease of convience. End of problem.
33. is that taking place in AFGANISTAN ??
nice ,   tlv   (08.09.11)
or in the ONLY democracy in the M.E??
34. What a mess.
Matt ,   UK   (08.09.11)
Would this be the same tram system built in occupied Jerusalem in contravention of international Law?
35. #6 Sagi, humor?
Rahel   (08.09.11)
you probably think this is funny- I find it shocking. Israel is becoming a Gottesstaat- religious nuts running a once free country. Haredi women are keeping their hubbies who are too pious to work? But they get preferential treatment? What for? Let them stand in line. let them walk 2 blocks to get a ticket. And why did this schmarotzer not buy a ticket for his wife? It was the least this useless man could do.... I pity the women.
36. Oye! & on Tisha'B'Av!
(08.09.11)
Now watch G-d who isn't "Katnuni" (a gnitpicker) is going to get Angry at all of us for this and zap us! (Please G-d no!)
37. Religious Spokesmen for G-D?
max ,   washington dc   (08.09.11)
What do Moslem, Jewish and Christian Zealots have in common? Answer: Their belief that G-D created them first and it is ok to treat "Women" as servants and second class human beings, even beheading them as was done by the Religious Police in Saudi Arabia to an Indonesian maid for killing her master in self defense. In modern civilized societies courts with juries try civil and criminal cases, not Religious leaders, who should be more concerned with teaching G-D's commandments and leave enforcement to elected society representatives whose rules of law are much less brutal than what the zealots impose.
38. This story is a "Crock" & stinks
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (08.09.11)
Since they were together, it doesn't make sense that he wouldn't buy a second ticket for his wife and that he would have sent her to another booth to buy a ticket for herself This story is a real Bubbah Meiseh
39. #5 Israeli 2
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (08.09.11)
Get your priorities and ducks in order CHAYALIM FIRST !!
40. El-Nakam
Dovit ,   Israel   (08.09.11)
TRy reading the story. Her husband can't buy the ticket b/c she has to have her photo taken. a/nd the religious whackos refuse to take a photo of a woman, even though that has nothing to do with Judaism.
41. Israeli grandma
Dovit ,   Israel   (08.09.11)
You have carefully ignored the huge range of anti-female cultural and legal restrictions right here in Israel. No praying at the wall. No holding Torah. No talking or singing out loud. Keep to women's sidewalks. Keep to the back of the bus. No women in newspaper photos. And you forget that even in those Muslim nations you mention, their own anti-female garbage started out small, just like ours did. But now theirs is huge and ours is not so small anymore either.
42. As P.T. Barnum had once said
Ish Kabibble ,   Delancey   (08.09.11)
"A Sucker is born everyone minute" This story has only proven how right he was What a load of horsefeathers, he sent his wife to a separate booth, while he could have bought two tickets at the same time FRIARIM !!
43. David # 32 , SF
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.09.11)
It's not a ticked . It's a card , with your id and picture . But you have to fill in a form , and they have to take a picture of you . And this is the problem : a man who takes a picture of a woman . We have such cards in Gush DAN , and don't need your advice to how to use them . It's done .
44. Solution to Haredi segregation issue
Yehudit ,   US   (08.09.11)
The solution to this problem is that if there are haredi modesty issues when issuing train tickets is to set up a booth large enough to divide the booth in half with two windows to the public, one for women and one for men. The male workers have their separate distinct side and the women have their distinct side and the male and female workers never are in contact during the day if they don't want. To have a whole booth for just one gender is repulsive and discriminatory to women and should be stopped. This is ridiculous. Grow up and realize that there are women in the world that you have to learn to get along with.
45. @Haim #21
Yehudit ,   US   (08.09.11)
Don't give them any more suggestions such as putting women in carriages and wagons with cattle and donkeys. They might just take you up on the offer. LOL
46. Kol Hakavod to her and her husband
Yehudit ,   US   (08.09.11)
Kol HaKavod to her and especially her husband for feeling that this kind of segregation goes far beyond what Judaism teaches. They both had the good sense to see what is happening to their community and are speaking out against it not only for themselves, but for others. It is a blessing to see this man support his wife in this way. Good for him!
47. outrageous!
nadav   (08.09.11)
haredim should be re-educated
48. Easy solution - cancel use of rail by haradim
William ,   Israel   (08.09.11)
Ban them from the rail service and insist they use a lesser priced donkey cart with rotten veggies. If a woman is discriminated against (50% of the population) then it would be better to "discriminate" against the Haradim (15% of the population).
49. Separate is NEVER equal
Carl ,   USA   (08.09.11)
Can a man buy at the women's kiosk? Is it acceptable to deny service to an Arab or Muslim if that is the "norm" in a particular neighborhood? Are there stands that sell ONLY to Arabs or Muslims? Any sect that cannot abide by the inclusive norms of modern society should simply keep themselves isolated and not insist on using the services and benefits of that society.
50. It sounds like they Hate Women
Linda Rivera ,   New York, USA   (08.09.11)
In the Torah, G-D gives women a place of respect and honor.
51. Ben jabo , 38 . You did'nt read this article
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.09.11)
or , with your inferiority , did'nt understand it
52. #34 - I didn't know Western Jerusalem was occupied
William ,   Israel   (08.09.11)
hell, why not give it all to the Arabs who ethnically cleansed the Jews and stole their homes in 1948....after all, the Jews have no connection to Jerusalem, right? BTW, didn't you notice that the ICJ ruling on the "occupied Jerusalem" wasn't really a ruling but just a non-binding advisory which ignored 85% of the evidence before making an opinionated statement, including the war crimes by Arabs and illegal annexation by Jordan? The evidence is so overwhelming that even the Left-leaning Israeli supreme court had to side with Jews who's property in Eastern Jerusalem neighborhoods were stolen from them and given to Arabs (violation of Geneva Convention), and was ruled that Jews can re-claim their property. Wonder if the ICJ would reject that ruling too even though it reverses a violation of Intl Law.
53. #40 - more sickening is this....
William ,   Israel   (08.09.11)
not the taking of the photo but what any depraved (not all) haradi would do with that photo in the privacy of their home.
54. #39 - Soldiers would agree with #5
William ,   Israel   (08.09.11)
55. #41 - hardly a fair comparison
William ,   Israel   (08.09.11)
Those incidents mentioned about Arab nations did NOT start out small. They were part of a systematic approach in a male-centric society. Arab nations were tribal at first and women are treated poorly, and as property, among them. The Koran only justified it through "Allah" but didn't change anything. Today, in some countries, it's even worse and again Islam is used to justify the discrimination. Where it has flourished it was supported by the entire State infrastructure. Saudi Arabia is a theocracy with a King. Iran is a theocracy with Mullahs. Israel is a democracy with a voted electorate, and all the incidents you mentioned in Israel take place in a 5 block radius in Jerusalem. That's pretty darn small compared to all over Israel and the freedoms everyone else has.
56. #54 William
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (08.09.11)
Women & Children have their whole lives ahead of them Soldiers only have a short respite before they return to duty
57. 39 BEN JABO First come,first served.
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.09.11)
Civilised people should let hayalim ,elderly, tired looking mothers with children, pass spontaneously.
58. 28 Babishka this is not commercial.
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.09.11)
59. william , ben jabo .
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.09.11)
Soldiers don't need such a "pass" , so don't need to wait .
60. Ora , 57 .
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.09.11)
Chayalim don't need such a "pass" , as they have'nt to pay buses nor trams . In gush Dan we have already something ressembling this card . It has many financial advantages .
