While it's true that some Muslims exaggerate food rations while breaking their fasting, the sunna (prophet's habits) was to break the iftar with a few dates and yoghurt, praying the tarawih prayers, and resuming a reasonable meal at say 9 or 10:00 pm. The phenomenon of extravagant iftar tables is more of a cultural one though. Most of the food you see in the picture will NOT go to waste. Rather, it's saved for the sohour meal (last meal before sunrise) or given to the poor. On a personal level, I'm all for modesty. The values of Ramadan include austerity and asceticism, which is beautiful and teaches us not to waste year-round. Unfortunately, the huge iftar tables is a symptom of global unrestrained consumerism, which is not particular to Muslim/Arab cultures.

It is an indication of the Pals lie about starving if they can pamper themselves with such lavish meals. I guarantee you that poor people cannot provide in such abundance. I only have to think about the breathing skeletons in Somalia to see the difference between over-fed and starving. It is appalling that you would scrape off the scraps from the table to give to the poor after everybody plays up with the food. It would be more in keeping with the spirituality of the season if food boxes were prepared from the pot rather than the plate. I don't think it is as much consumerism as it is an excuse for over-indulgence and feeding their greed. The muslims I know do not break fast with such banquets. They exercise a modesty that is much more in line with yours. Quite frankly, there is a contradiction to the season between what happens from sundown and from sunup.
