1. If you love your husband ...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.18.11)
don t give up.Brain damage is not irreversible.
2. by the way
observer   (08.18.11)
Actually, the required level of sanity is quite low - most MKs would pass it, for example ;) - so provided the husband is occasionally corpus mentus, and is sufficiently decent to realise his wife's right to a life, there should not be much of a problem. If he should refuse, indirect coercion could be applied by threatening to withdraw care.
3. "alternative rabbinical court" what's that?
(08.18.11)
If she did not get divorced according to torah law she can have children mamzrim.

your promise to your husband during wedding ceremony was broken it was on lips not in the heart, till death do us part, for better for worse, in sickness and in health now is gone
5. where is the promise
alfredo ,   Israel   (08.18.11)
for better for worse, in sickness and in health, in adversity and prosperity, till death do us part.

You are mistaken. There is no such vow or statement of commitment in a Halachic Marriage Ceremony. You have been watching to much American TV or Movies.
9. #8 Judaism doesn't promote divrorce either
American Sabrah ,   Israel   (08.18.11)
Those who agree to marry each other based on their commitment to each other. Divorce is only necessary in cases of abuse, infidelity, and dishonesty.Usually marital therapy is encouraged for couples with marital unrest. Divorces do happen and unfortunately they are more common now than what they used to be.I'm not trying to place judgment on the woman but given her circumstances, I know of many people who stood by their spouses side till the end when they took ill. It may not be easy being married to a sickly person but some people are courageous enough to stick it out for them. It just comes to show you what true love is really all about.I don't think this woman was right for leaving her husband when he needed her most. It seems rather selfish to me that she abandoned him rather than appreciating all the things he has done for her before his heart attack.
10. 2. Observer "corpus mentus??"
Mordechai ,   Manchester, UK   (08.18.11)
Not "corpus mentus" (which could be roughly translated as "minty body") but compos mentis "of sound mind".
11. Edithann, USA: Hospitals and long term care facilities in
Rivkah   (08.18.11)
Israel are less likely to euthanize the elderly than hospitals and doctors and nurses and/or relatives of those in comas in America. In California, a nurse can put T.S. for Total Sedation on a medical chart without consulting with the patient, a doctor or the patient's relatives. The patient is then euthanized and there is rarely prosecution for the medical murder. During Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, patients in hospitals and nursing homes that could not be evacuated were medically murdered (euthanized). The Grand Juries would not prosecute the murderers.
12. don't condemn her
iselin ,   Oslo, Norway   (08.18.11)
It takes two active people to make a marriage. Why should a still young woman give up her life and be a martyr for a near vegetable? I don't understand why she didn't just return to Europe to get the divorce.
13. Wives divorce 80 percent of all brain-injured husbands.
Scott ,   USA   (08.19.11)
Even when the problem is just partial memory loss, slurred speech or aphasia. It seems that a man with a brain injury isn't "someone I can look up to."

ok why r u all condemning this women without knowing about her marriage before the husband got ill,and where does it state she is abandoning him...she just wants a divorce...
17. The important factor is indeed..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.19.11)
if there was love before the injury. My sister succeeded ,with herculian work,to transform her husband who was in a vegetative state[the doctors had given up all hope, and advised her to put him in an institution. This was not an option for her]in a human being who could live an normal life[not professional] He had again his great sense of humor.
18. I DON'T BLAME HER
Not a bit ,   She deserves freedom   (08.19.11)

What was this alternative Beis Din? Which Rabbis were on it and how did they actually run the divorce proceedings (i.e. did they wait for him to be prially lucid, etc.)?
