1. Wrong
matt ,   usa   (08.18.11)
actually , the world has been talking about Syria ...you didnt notice because you are totally self-obsessed and assume the world is only talking about YOU, regardless of the facts. Take your head out of your butt- you are not the center of the universe.
2. hypocrisy
colin   (08.18.11)
And the world takes no notice of anything hapening in Syria. QUITE RIGHTLY AS IT SHOULD BE !!! wHO GIVES ANYBODY TTHE RIGHT TO INTERFERE WITH ANY ARAB NATION. The americans are the biggest intefereing batch of rotten untruthful, lieing false people.
3. Obama
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (08.18.11)
Bechor is being kind to Obama. In Libya, the rebellion is an illegal foreign-funded insurrection. Gadaffi's shooting was self defense after UK and US sponsored armed terrorists tried to take over. In Syria, Assad is killing unarmed protestors. The reason Obama is not intervening in Syria is because of Israel. Obama is afraid that if Assad falls, Hezbolla will fall. Without Syria and Hezbolla, Israel is much safer.
4. Battleships? The Syrian navy acquired a Battleship?
seadog1946 ,   Erie Basin, NYC   (08.18.11)
I think you are exagerating a bit, Guy... the word Warship would be more appropriate.
5. lhypocrisy? why?
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (08.18.11)
6. #1 Bechor is right
Jorge ,   Israel/USA/Argentina   (08.18.11)
When Israel defendes herself, the world rush to stop Israel. Syria has been almost 5 month and Assad keeps killing. No actions to stop him. No UNSC resolutions are placed. ALL OF THE RESOLUTIONS WERE VETOED BY CHINA AND RUSIA.
7. #1 actually you are wrong
Jonny ,   Cape Town   (08.18.11)
Here in South Africa, we have ignorant judges, clowning Archbishops, demonstrating Trade Unions, boycotting university students, religious judicial councils, and other assorted rag tag organisations and Nobel prize winners, whose silence over Syria has been deafening. Not a peep, not a whimper, not a murmur. Maybe, just maybe they are gathering their strength for renewed outbursts against anothe country in the Middle East.
8. It is more important for the World to
DT ,   TA Israel   (08.18.11)
seek Israels demise than bother about condemning Syria and Co.
9. He forgot to mention Israeli silence...
Sheik rattle & roll ,   USA   (08.18.11)
He forgot to mention Israeli silence. Israel shares a border with Syria that has been quiet for over 30 years. It is no secret that Israel doesn't want the status quo changed in Syria at all keeping to the premise that it is better the devil we know than the devil we don't know. Israel should take every opportunity to embarrass Syria and Assad but it says nothing or it could use it's military to stop the atrocities but of course it prefers to blame Obama and others for doing nothing.
10. Sheik rattle & roll #9
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (08.18.11)
We have not been silent. But we have no ambassador in Syria either. The Arabs will continue to massacre each other regardless of any outsiders and that is a pure fact. Syria is not going to be around much longer. It will splitter into several city states before it stabilizes. Just like EVERY other Arab regime.
11. Here's the deal...
Jonny Gee ,   New York, NY   (08.18.11)
Obama has been relatively hands-off Syria because his ultimate strategy is to force Israel into a "peace" deal that would require it to cede the Golan Heights. However, with Assad gone, Obama's dream of a lesser Israel would be harder to achieve.
12. The truth is ..
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (08.18.11)
That the world is far more concerned with us building in our capital than the murder of thousands of Arabs. Look how long Darfur went on before the world even noticed. Algeria has massacred over 100,000 people - the world hummm we are still waiting. Egypt launches a revolution so that they can murder all the Copts and the world approves. No our building is far more destructive in the minds of the 'world' than any Arab murders.
13. A word about Russia
HaifaGuy   (08.18.11)
There are 2 things that keep Putin/Medvedev's junta in power: 1) oil&gas revenues; 2)state-subsidized alcohol. The two are intertwined. The former helps the corrupt and deply immoral Russian rulers keep the booze at artificially low prices. The absurdity is that in today's Russia a bottle of mineral water costs more than a 1L can of beer. This is why alcoholism is more rampant than ever before in Russian history, their birthrates are down to a trickle (with up to 70% of children born with alcohol-related disorders), and as a result - public dissent is all but non-existant. And that's exactly what they want in the Kremlin: keep'em drunk, keep'em stupid, keep'em passive and lazy. Maybe that's the attitude the Arab leaders should adopt... Oops, there's a little problem with islam.
14. What noone is talking about
OpinionatedWebDude ,   USA   (08.18.11)
I hate the Assad regime as much as anyone but I havent heard anyone cite the implications should the protests actually topple Assad. First off, the protests could be democratic in name only. In the Mid East, who knows how revolutions will end up. Additionally I'm sure the Sunni dominant population won't be too nice to the Alawites if Assad is actually toppled.
15. How Obama and Ashton will fix it
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (08.18.11)
Obama and Ashton know perfectly that they won't be able to replace Assad with a tyrant more to their taste as long as Assad has the evil Arab supremacist League's backing. So they'll have to make an offer that they cannot refuse. If the evil Arab supremacist League dumps Assad, then,in return,Obama and Ashton will throw Israel to the wolves next month. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
16. Matt #1...you're gonna save Syrians by "talking"?!?!?
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (08.19.11)
Wow. Don't you know that there's a reason for the expression "talk is cheap"? Talking is not going to save any Syrian civilians, or get rid of Assad the brutal dictator. Bechor has been talking for years about the problems caused by the world's acceptance of Arab dictators as "legitimate". They ain't. None of them are. They're all brutal thugs and Bechor has pointed this out time and again. Where've you been, Matt?
17. U.S. Republicans questioning U.N. support.
Chaim ,   Israel   (08.19.11)
U.S. Republicans are starting to question their nation's massive financial support of the U.N. Recently Newt Gingrich denounced support for the "biased" U.N. This is a highly favorable trend which should be encouraged throughout the Western World. The world would be far better off without the U.N. The billions of dollars saved, by ending U.N. funding, could be used to accomplish enormous good.
18. and no thousasnds of Leftists are demonstratin in Europe,
or Moslem countries!   (08.19.11)
19. No one is accusing Syrian of "disproportionate response" !!
(08.19.11)
20. Meanwhile, yesterday UN condemned people building in Israel!
hypocrites!   (08.19.11)
21. #2 colin
solomon ,   bklyn   (08.19.11)
Unarmed people are being killed in Syria. Yet no one has the right to 'interfere'? I'll bet you'll want to 'interfere' when Israel kills terrorists as they did today. YOU are the hypocrite.
22. Flotillas
Naftali ,   Tel Aviv Israel   (08.19.11)
Where are the worldwide protests? Where are the aid flotillas? When Israel rightly invaded Gaza after years and years of terror attacks, there were demonstrations worldwide. Now, regarding Syria? Nothing. Not even one demo anywhere. The so-called human rights activists gathered a whole pile of boats to bring "aid" to the Palestinians, Why are none of them bringing aid to the Syrians, or to the Palestinians recently shelled by the Syrians?
23. #20 you're right
Sue Goldstein ,   Israel   (08.19.11)
While thousands of people have been BUTCHERED in Syria, the eyes of the world focus on freaking APARTMENTS in Israel. Can you believe the INSANITY? APARTMENTS!! People, you need to make your voices heard. Your leaders need to know that their countrymen will not put up with such ridiculous wastes of time and money. FOCUS ON LIBYA AND SYRIA AND LEAVE ISRAEL ALONE, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.
24. the bbc and the palestinian state
sweeter than honey ,   far away   (08.19.11)
which the pals try to promulgate in september is a pivotal reason for what is broadcast by the bbc and similar. for the bbc, the pals can do no wrong, thus no news about recent terrorism. their support for the "arab spring", meaning peace and light, means that the loss on control in sinai by egyptian authorities, linked to the opening of gaza borders doesn't get a mention. HOWEVER, when bashir's boys killed a few pals in a so called camp (though they were probably muslim brotherhood) they went loud. the camp looked like a leafy suberb actually, and i thought perhaps the syrians ought not to stop, doing a neighbourly thing, like?. and i know how many refugees syria has taken in from iraq. but the bbc goes on and on about the poor pals, in their malls and large cars etc.. as they employ anti zionist and pro boycott types of jews they avoid an anti-semitism charge. but i've never heard of an erudite zionist amongst them, or continuously broadcast by them. it's more a diet of radio ramallah. they do report in extreme comfort from israel, and obviously feel very much at ease. i wonder if that confuses their belief in their own importance? repeat, when the syrians killed so called pals recently, the bbc went real loud.
25. To: No. 9
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / israel   (08.19.11)
What exactly is it that you wish Israel to say, and why do you harbor the illusion -- sorry, delusion -- that the world would not land on Israel with both feeth for having the temerity to comment on a situation in an Arab country? I'll let you in on a little secret: Damascus is in Israel's gunsights. If the Syrians get stupid, Syria gets wiped off the map. Understand? Ask the Syrians what happened to them the last time they got a little stupid with Israel. Oh, what the hell -- I'll save you the trouble of researching it -- Israel shot down 82 Syrian MiGs (most of which were piloted by Russians). No, Syria is not looking to tackle Israel, and they wouldn't stand a ghost of a chance if they did, anyway. We bombed their budding nuclear dream to hell and gone in October 2007, and we are not afraid of them.
26. To: Haifa Guy at No. 13
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (08.19.11)
I like your scenario, but since Arab countries are nominally Islam and Islam prohibits liquor, the vodka scenario won't work. You are correct, however. Three in ten infants in Russia are born with foetal alcohol syndrom. Sad, and scary.
27. The UN,America, Syria.The ME boiling pot
Dick   (08.19.11)
Hypocrisy is synonim with Turkey; was, is, remains. But of course so is the rest of the world, and they want Israel to trust them, The UN has lost his " raison d'etre " many years ago. the arab league is, was in charge, with a puppet in tow Ban ki moon. Carnage is rempant and this worthless UN is bleeding the world for $$$ billions. Last but not least, Obama forcing a new ambassador to Syria, the modern butcher, his ally. Failure is very American in the Middle East, and it's envoy is still on the job in Damascus, our bloody friend.
28. Comment
George ,   Toronto, Canada   (08.20.11)
As usually world has double standard. But most interesting (and not mentioned in article) the position of China the new rising power.
29. W/O the IDF, We Are All Toast, J St.
Noah Lev ,   HollywoodUSA   (08.20.11)
For decades, the right has been saying, "Get the UN out of the US and the US out of the UN". Its an organization that was a failure from the get go. Its pure delusion..the delusion that it can somehow bring peace. It is outrageous in its failure. Just look at the Horn of Afriaca for its humanitarian assistance when needed. The Israeli retaliation in Hamastan over the incursion (and invasion) by militants of its sovereignty and attempt to kil ldozensof civiloians...and the UNs reaction, says it all, in one unsuccessful attempt to thwart future such actions. Why Israel even bothers to sit and tolerate the UN is beyond me? But I suppose since the Pales have observer status, (soon to be lifted), Israel might a swell participate in this farce. But the bottom line: W/O Israel's IDF, there is no Israel, UN or no UN. Ben Gurion, and Peres understood Israels Jewish future depended upon its might..it leaned from WW2. Some still haven't. What does J St have to say now or Peace Now? When their people are murdered, they might finally get it right, maybe?
