Israel retains a lawless territory applying military law combined with British and even Ottoman law in this disputed territory. If you want order you must have law and if you want law it must be a part of Israel. Let me guess, they're all Religious kids. The police do this ALL the time. They are quick to arrest religious kids before checking any story. The kids are under age. Did they take the parents wit them? This all happened on Shabbat... It will take two weeks (on average and we have a lot of these incidents to average) before the police find no evidence and finally are forced to release these kids. In the mean time the trail of the real perpetrators is gone. But the police etc are happy. they've made the "settlers" the scape goats.

I wonder what would be the reactions if the headline was worded this way instead? The power of words to make people rush to hasty conclusions cannot be underestimated. Indeed, there is very little that is clear about this. We are supposed to believe that 'settlers' attacked a 10-year-old and on shabbat, of all days. That is highly improbable, unless you, like the bigoted author of post no. 8, believe that all 'settlers' are natural born monsters, roaming the land looking for innocent Arab children to beat up, even on shabbat. Is that the photo of the purported victim and the injuries he supposedly sustained after being attacked by 13 people with metal rods? Do these injuries appear consistent with his allegations? Wouldn't his cut be surrounded by heavy bruising if his story was true? The teenagers arrested may very well be guilty and the Palestinian kid's story may be true. That is why in a country with a functioning independent judiciary system (...ahem, Anton from Istanbul, something you might want to read up on, as there is no chance you can experience it in your own country...) a suspect is presumed innocent until a conclusion of an investigation and a fair trial. I also question the integrity of police action. It would seem that given the current delicate situation, there is a significant pressure to nip in the bud any source of friction with the Palestinian Arabs before it inevitably spirals into further violence. In this case it seems to be more expedient to round up some scapegoats for pubic display, rather than allow the investigation to run its course. Contrast that to a month-long investigation before the arrests were made in the case of the Fogel murders, an infinitely more heinous crime.

It is impossible to control everybody among the settlers. Most of them are religious and fanatically anti-Arab. Their fanaticism stems from Orthodox Jewish religion, which has its parallel in Muslim fanaticism. Events like this one will be occurring always among the fanatics. The best solution is to separate the populations by getting the Yesha settlers out. In addition, it is important to get them into a less fanatic state of mind through revising Judaism. It is time to reform Orthodox Judaism, yes the ancient cat. Let Reform Jews, the ones from the twentieth century AD, lead the way.

I imagine the settlers will have a "price tag" attack to get them out of jail. This is lousy PR for Israel and unless it reins in these fanatics it is going to be totally delegitimized.
