1. Third option- Turkey should apologize to Israel
elhrac ,   USA   (09.05.11)
2. Do Nothing !.
Arn. ,   Sweden.   (09.05.11)
Leave Turkey, Syria and Irak to Themselves, HASHEM has desided for their Destruction. There is nothing Isael can do about that. I would Guess They have aproximately not more than some five years left of existence. Arn.Sweden.
3. Agios Efstratios/Dardanelles
Matt   (09.05.11)
Abraham Two/IDF base. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agios_Efstratios Angie Merkel is going to stop paying the bills and underwriting Europe. The Germans said to Greece sell some islands, so maybe we will buy it or lease it from them.
4. Appeasement.
michaelpielet ,   boca raton, Israel   (09.05.11)
This is all part of the U.S., Iranian battle for hegemony in the middle east. Iran has won the battle for Turkey. Israeli-Turkish relations are a victim of that lost battle. It is quite obvious that the Turks because of economic inducements, oil, etc. and Islamism have decided to align themselves with Iran. There is absolutely nothing Israel can do at this time. Apologies are of absolutely no value. The policy change has been obvious for several years. Remember when Peres was insulted at Davos by the leader of Turkey.
5. Yes Israel should Apologize
Mark ,   usa   (09.05.11)
Many songs have been written about men apologizing to women. Apology does not undermine one’s honor, but rather, the opposite is true – it is a strategy adopted by a party that cannot afford to bear the results of refusing to apologize Turks always were very protective of Jews from Spain 1492 and Hitler 1945 Turks always welcomed the Jews no matter what when no country was allowing the Jews in that inculding USA, we have historical duity and loyalty to be friends with Turks and never undermine their security, Turks are not our enemy,
6. Asking for Dane Geld
stefi ,   israel   (09.05.11)
This apology is a typical blackmail, which reminds me of this verse from Kipling which is very up to this occasion: It is always a temptation to an armed and agile nation To call upon a neighbour and to say: -- "We invaded you last night--we are quite prepared to fight, Unless you pay us cash to go away." And that is called asking for Dane-geld, And the people who ask it explain That you've only to pay 'em the Dane-geld And then you'll get rid of the Dane! It is always a temptation for a rich and lazy nation, To puff and look important and to say: -- "Though we know we should defeat you, we have not the time to meet you. We will therefore pay you cash to go away." And that is called paying the Dane-geld; But we've proved it again and again, That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld You never get rid of the Dane. It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation, For fear they should succumb and go astray; So when you are requested to pay up or be molested, You will find it better policy to say: -- "We never pay any-one Dane-geld, No matter how trifling the cost; For the end of that game is oppression and shame, And the nation that pays it is lost!"
7. Appease the Turkeys today...
Albrecht Klein ,   Germany   (09.05.11)
be humiliated again tomorrow.
8. honor
matt ,   usa   (09.05.11)
What did Churchill say when turning down Hitler's generous peace offer of 1940? What did he say when explaining why Britain would fight on alone after France had fallen , America didn't want to get involved and Gernany looked invincible? He said London could consume an entire German army and that Londoners would rather die than live as slaves. That is national honor. The first writer suggests foregoing national honor in favor of national interests. He thus shows no understanding of the meaning or importance of ''national honor''. Without national honor you don't have a nation worth fighting for. If your only interest is staying alive then emigrate to a different country and change your nationality.
9. yoshi has no honour nor any pride
JL   (09.05.11)
he would lick a shoe sole if it would avoid unpleasantness
10. Turkey should appologize for its aggression
Menachem ,   Israel   (09.05.11)
The "appeasement school" insisting on Israel "apologizing" for defending herself is not only immoral and spineless but detached from reality. While it is true that Turkey is an important power in the region the same is true about Israel as an technological and military powerhouse. Israel's GDP per capita is 3 times Turkey's and despite neo-Ottoman dreams, IDF remains the strongest military force in the region. Turkey relied for years for cutting-edge Israeli technology which will now be beyond Ankara's reach while Turkey doesn't offer anything of substance that Israel can't get elsewhere. The breakup between the countries is unfortunate but is actually more painful for Turkey than Israel.
11. Great second opinion, I agree!
Salma ,   Palestine   (09.05.11)
Don't appease Turkey....Appease yourself.
12. This AM in Turkey
Ralph ,   USA   (09.05.11)
After they way they treated Israeli air passengers at Istanbul Airport, Israel must rethink its position. Muslim countries are just not friends of the Jews. Somebody needs to face that fact. Too bad. Look how the Turks solved the Cyprus issue.
13. Anybody
John ,   Herzliya, Israel   (09.05.11)
Anybody who thinks that apology to Turkey would lead to normalization between the two countries should find a good doctor.
14. keep cool
Yael Schlichting ,   Raubling - Germany   (09.05.11)
I do not believe that an apology would hold back Turkey from going its way. Since a few years, the Erdogan-Administration is about to tighten relations with Muslim countries and damage ties with non-Muslim countries. Erdogan damages the integration of the Turkish minority in Germany, he prevents the overdue reconciliation in Cyprus, he strengthens ties with Iran, he goes back to confrontation with the Kurdish minority in the east of Turkey and he deliberately chose confrontation with Israel supporting the Gaza-flotilla. Would appeasement do any good? YES! It would open opportunities to distract Erdogans islamist policy and at least win us time to better prepare. We see it since many decades, that it is not the Muslim countries style to own up to their responsibilities. In fact they do not seem to see any responsibilities towards non-Muslims and non-Muslim countries. So we should not nourish hopes, that Turkey would return to a reliable relationship, soon. The development triggered by the AKP now goes for toooooo long to be reverted in one day. It will take many years and the good will of both sides until the relationship will have been rebuilt. Unfortunately at present I cannot see this good will on the Turkish side.
15. appease, shmapease
oferdesade ,   israel   (09.05.11)
what's happening between us and turkey has nothing to do with us. they were refused by the EU, they're trying to rebrand themselves as ME. with the latter falling apart, they stand a good chance of doing that. so until the word on the arab street is clear on israel, turkey aint going nowhere. the best we can do is come back at them and promote the armenian thing as - perhaps - an irritation that we can either promote in the media and worldwide in a big way, or make it go away, if they suddenly decide to get friendly.
16. Send Israelis who are NATO dual citizens
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (09.05.11)
Let's see the Turks start dissing NATO citizens when they round up Israelis at the airport. Forget about EU citizenship, since the EU has shown time and again it is impotent and toothless in the face of Islamofascism. However, let's see how NATO reacts if and when the Turks arbitrarily seize the passports of Israeli passengers who are also citizens of NATO countries. Maybe it's time for NATO to think twice about Turkey as a member - for all the defense cooperation, they're just giving valuable western (aka developed by Christians and Jews) military gear to a country that appears to be rapidly sliding downhill into just another racist Islamic dictatorship.
17. No appeasement
tz   (09.05.11)
They're also not apologizing for bombing Kurdish civilians over the Iraqi border. There's no appeasing Islamists. It's interpreted as weakness. Latma did a good job of portraying Erdogan's character -- and that of his two buddies, Ahmadinejad and al-Assad.
18. It's not about "ego or honor"
Deebo_ ,   Holon   (09.05.11)
An official apology carries precedence and implications that would prevent Israel's defense system from properly protecting its citizens. Erdogan et al wanted to deteriorate relations with Israel from day one and this apology thing is the only card they can play to make it happen.
19. Absolutely No Apology to Turkey
Velwer ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.05.11)
It is obvious that turkey is trying to fins a way to downplay its relationship with Israel. It is very simililar to the Palestinians. The more we concede and apologize, the more demands are made without any concessions made by the other side. We did nothing wrong, we have nothing to apologize for.
20. #16 Brian Cohen
Anja ,   Berlin   (09.05.11)
so, sir brain cohen, light unto intelligence, please explain why Turkey is a member of NATO and not Israel? What member of internatinal bodies is Israel anyway? besides worlds largest money reciepient nation... Israel is a failling state in the middle of emerging nations.
21. would an apology suffice?
sweeter than honey ,   far away   (09.05.11)
if so, it would probably have been given. so all this is perhaps a smoke screen. as no. 3 suggests certain contingencies have been in the pipeline for several years (joint large scale israeli air-force exercises with greece and italy for example, which might serve as show-cases for equipment sales). on the other hand the israeli business community has been eager to establish in turkey, other contingencies. anyway good to know that there are contingencies, which generally imply possibilities rather than probabilities, which have been in the pipeline for years. that being the case i would think that the apologists would be rightly a little pessimistic. as for the notion of apology itself i am reminded of jabotinsky when he wrote, in 1911 no less, "instead of excessive apology". it seems he was prescient about just this situation, about the fundamental inequality of jews in their relationship with others. 100 years later, exactly, and it comes to pass. weird.
22. Solution
Max ,   Washington DC   (09.05.11)
It is in the Strategic interests of all middle east countries to cooperate in the face of Iranian militaristic adventures which will be more dangerous when they have nuclear weapons. Maybe the US could sponsor a chess match between the leaders of Turkey, Israel and Egypt with the losers congratulating the winner.
23. appeasement
FERIDUN ,   israel   (09.05.11)
REMEMBER THE RESULTS OF THE APPEASEMET OF ANOTHER ARROGANT UPCOMING LEADER IN THE 1930s to paraphrase George Santayana : HE WHO FORGETS HISTORY IS DOOMED TO SEE IT REPEADED
24. Turkey longs to have Israel enemy image.
Zeev ,   Rehovot   (09.05.11)
They does not wish Israel apology to have a pretext for animosity. If Israel apologizes, they should invent another provocation, may be much more dangerous for both sides. It is better to do them favor and not apologize.
25. If it is about national honour
Emre ,   Istanbul   (09.05.11)
We as Turks have also national honour. You killed 9 innocent people. What would they do if you wouldnt kill them ? Would they bringing some weapns to Gaza ? Knifes, forks ? There was no need to kill the people and if we ask pay it back your national honour is bigger than us ?
26. The right to arm and keep bears
Gideon Reader ,   USA   (09.05.11)
There are bears in the Turkish forrests. They are of the Kurdish kind. The right to arm and keep bears should not be infringed. Arms, equipment, communications and covert operational training, covert transhippments, as well as any other support they may require to seek their freedom and independence and to make Turkey a very sore tooth in an already diseased head. Armenian groups? They are cool as well. Azeris? Excellent. Have I forgotten any other breakaway groups?
27. abbas and barak in amman
alexi   (09.05.11)
barak is not the foreign minister the last I checked. The danger of him meeting abbas is that he likely offered concessions which will only harm israel. His way was rejected by israelis long ago. Bibi doesn't seem to have control. Abbas has to sit and negotiate with lieberman but he is petrified to do so as are many of israel's adversaries like syria, erdogan of turkey. They are afraid of going one on one with him. And well they should be as if fistifcuffs broke out, he would beat the hell out of each one of them. So they meet with the serial appeaser barak who knows how to sell israel out. Bibi, wake up before its too late.
28. Maybe you should apologise for existing
Mike ,   Oxford UK   (09.05.11)
What a dumb article.... And while you're at it... apologise to Turkey for not allowing arms into Gaza and apologise to Hamas for getting in the way of its rockets when they fire them at you. And apologise for breathing and being alive because that seems to upset quite a few people
29. Erdogan Really Does Not Care
Ron ,   OC, US   (09.05.11)
His interest is within the moslem world. He would rather not deal with Israel at all. He no longer wants our tourists, military contracts or good will. His military may be large and Turkey is a larger economy than Israel's. But, his military has severe limitations if operating in the Southern Mediteranian and as for mentioned his economy is geared more his fellow moslems. An apology simply will not matter. If Erdogan goes to court he has already lost as the Palmer report is rather critical of Turkey. Israel will just have to ride it out. Let him go to Gaza. He will look pretty bad in the US and EU, great to his fellow moslems. An apology will only make things worse.
30. Apology to Turkey
Jerry Fischer ,   New London, CT, USA   (09.05.11)
Because the Turks are wrong regarding the Armenians and Kurds is no reason for us to be wrong regarding the Turks...
