How do you spell "Backpeddling" in Turkish ? Anyway, credit where credit is due.
2. Good Liars
Marcel ,   Florida   (09.10.11)
Erdogan just backed off for a few days. He's caught the crusade against Israel fire and he has no plans of letting go. How much more can ISRAEL surrender to the insatiable Arab/Islamic cauldron. What we are seeing now is positive proof that the Road Map peace plan was always a futile attempt at peace with the jihad crusader. Israel ,restrained and ever appeasing an un-appeasable foe, weakened by the process has only invited the hordes from hell to come in for the final kill.
3. This joker does not stop entertaining us!
Jew1 ,   Ashdod   (09.10.11)
First he said that he is breaking all the ties with Israel (trade, economic and military). After that he claimed to be misunderstood and insisted only on military ties. Now the same story with war ships? This man can't make-up his mind or his tongue is working too fast before his brain gives orders...I thinks he likes to play yo-yo, yo-yo!
4. His real objective - The Gas fields of Cyprus and Israel
Ian T ,   Raanana   (09.10.11)
If he's backing down a bit it's because European countries have realized what he's really after and they're not impressed with his antics. The real reason for Turkey's irrational obsession with flotillas to Gaza has now been exposed and Europe has valuable interests at stake here. A liquified gas supply via Cyprus and Greece can go a long way towards resolving problems that are really important to Europe.
5. ERDOGAN AND TRUTH, OR NOT
Mark from Georgia ,   USA   (09.10.11)
A smart tactical retreat by Erdogan. But even this statement is based on a false premise. When Erdogan uses the phraseology and I quote: ""The eastern Mediterranean Sea is not Israel's private playground. As long as it avoids intervening in the freedom of movement in the region" The Palmer report was very clear in its findings. That Israel is in a state of war with Gaza and Hamas. That the fact that over 10,000 rocket and mortar attacks against Israeli civilians, is clear proof of this. So they found that: 1) The blockade was/is legal, and defensive. 2) The enforcement of the blockade was legal. 3) That Israel has intercepted weapons being smuggled before by sea. and it constitutes more proof of the blockades necessity. 4) That the IHH started the fight, it was premeditated, termed "reckless and violent" in the report. 5) That the IDF acted in self defense. Frankly, there was much more in the report, most, in Israel's favor. So when Erdogan uses the silly remark about Israel using the Mediterranean as a "playground". Nothing could be further from the truth, Israel is rightfully defending its citizens from almost daily attacks. When those attacks stop, Hamas recognizes Israel's right to exist, and renounces its intention to destroy Israel, the blockade can be removed. As is always the case with the Arabs, their problems are simply self inflicted.

Helena ,   Stockholm, Sweden   (09.10.11)
I do not believe in "translation problems". Simply Lieberman's strategy has worked. Having heard that Israel is contemplating training and arming the Kurds and flirting with Armenians - Erdogan got cold feet and started backpedalling. Muslims happen to understand only ONE language - force and intimidation.
7. woodshed
louis ,   usa   (09.10.11)
the us,eu , greece, russia must have told his sultanship start trouble and after we destroy your navy , your economy is next. dear isrealis, just remember the uighers. i believe the term used by erdogan was genocide. a couple of chinese contracts later, it was what genocide. turkish honor is easily bought with money.
8. He's still says he will send ships to break
Dwight ,   US   (09.10.11)
the legal blockade. EU, India, and others want the gas from Israel & Cyprus and will not tolerate Turk interfering with getting it. He lies
9. Misunderstanding Erdogan
ORLY ,   Tel Aviv Israel   (09.10.11)
Mr. Erdogan meant exactly what he said and said exactly what he meant, but being quoted all over the world and seing the response his remarks had made, he is trying to retract and state that he was misunderstood. He was not, neither over the war ships nor on the Israeli Gas. The west, please beware: this guy is very dangerous, as much as his foreign minister, and Mr. Obama and other European leaders should make facts very clear to him. By wanting to be the leader of the muslim world, because, of the arab spring, when masses do not know how to proceed, he is sowing more hate and despair, with the result of what happened in Cairo's Israeli embassy repeating itself. Words can kill.
10. Turkey hypocracy
Seaman ,   Aksakovo, Bulgaria   (09.10.11)
Let Turkey remembers February 13th, 2004 when their forces sunk motor ship Hera, killed 5 seamen and the rest 14 were forcibly disappeared. We still waiting for them
11. Turkey
Fabio ,   Buenos aires,argenti   (09.10.11)
Israel should send soldiers to protect the israeli people around the world, in the same way of thinking.

16. Erdogan Finally Wakes Up
DavidM ,   USA   (09.10.11)
Mr. Erdogan is trying to come down from his threatening comments. He finally woke up and saw that attacking the IDF would not be a picnic like his current war against Kurdish civilians and the occupation of unarmed Cyprus. Mr. Erdogan is known for attacks on unarmed civilians. Like a typical bully he whimpered away when he was confronted by someone who can fight back.
17. New statement not much different than the old statement
Ron ,   oc, us   (09.10.11)
Erdogan still means to cause Israel grief. If Erdogam keeps this up Leiberman will be correct in what he does sans arming the Kurds. Now if Erdogan arms Israel's enemies then...
18. Typical
Some Turk   (09.10.11)
Erdogan is throwing Israel a bone, and all he gets in return is laughter. Instead to simply pick up the bone and play along, you also wasted this opportunity. Sad. Very sad, indeed.
19. BS!
Adam ,   Golan Heights Israel   (09.10.11)
Int'l maritime law allows Israel to intercept and board any vessel planning on breaching the blockade, THE MOMENT IT ENTERS INT'L WATERS. Translation for the slow: If a ship departing Turkey has declared gaza it's destination, Israeli Navy is legally entitled to stop the ship once it leaves Turkey's territorial waters. If the ship declares a false destination, that is a violation of int'l maritime law.
20. How not to deal with a scud.
Peace ,   TLV   (09.10.11)
Next logical demand, ! When a scud is aimed to some where in israel, It will be a war crime to bring it down before it enters Israeli air space. Same logic as ships. Or some one running to you with an open knife pointed at you. you will not disarm him before the knife actually enters your body. because he could have changed his mind the last spilt second. You will be charged for war crime if you so do. Wow what brains !. May God bless the smart. Peace. TLV.
21. the source say it better than the translation : )
Salma ,   Palestine   (09.10.11)
>>"As long as "Israel" avoids intervening in the freedom of movement in the region". yeah that's the point.
22. ERDOGAN
H ROSEN ,   PA USA   (09.10.11)
He got a talking to from NATO and Obama. If you think the Israelis would not have sunk or damaged a Turkish war ship trying to break the blockade you are wrong. Israel also spoke to some Turkish politician and told him that Erdogan was insane if he thinks israel will back down. I think the "GUL" has something to do with this.
23. Turkey has Dishonored Itself
Dallas ,   Canada   (09.10.11)
Spin and lies always boomerang, and make the perpetrators as fools. You have shamed what used to exist of Turkey's honor, for all the world to see.
24. Adam Neira from Beautiful Melbourne
David Israel ,   New York, USA   (09.10.11)
In Turkish "Backpeddling" is "GERIYE ADIM ATMAK" or to step backwards. Ironically the ottoman military music band called the MEHTER TAKIMI , when they perform in the parades they go one step ahead and two steps back.
25. Ian #4 as a matter of fact:
David Israel ,   New York, USA   (09.10.11)
EU has warned Turkey yesterday to cool down threats to Greece and Cyprus. US state department also turned down PM Erdogan's request of US oil company Noble to pull out from energy explorations in the region.
26. Mark from GA
David Israel ,   New York, USA   (09.10.11)
Unfortunately most Turks do not read anything let alone reading the Palmer report. They take what their PM and other officials say as the truth to the extent that governments can easily manipulate public opinion and activity. One example to this happened in 1955 September 6-7 when the government spread a lie about Ataturk's birth house was put on fire in Salonika Greece and mobs went on the streets attacking not only Greek businesses and homes but also Jews and Armenians. This ordeal lasted for two days.
27. Lieberman's threats or not, internal pressure or not,
leo ,   usa   (09.10.11)
Erdogan backed off or not, but Armenian genocide must get its due recognition regardless of what Turkey will do next. This is decent thing to do and especially for Israel.
28. #21;Salma, TRY FACTS
Mark from Georgia ,   USA   (09.10.11)
Have you noticed that you pick and choose what statements to honor. What Erdogan says means nothing, it's what the law states. In that regard read post #5, which is truth, not lies. So when you say "that's the point", was is it you mean? That Erdogan can ignore the law? Is that really your position?
29. New Turkish Short Range Submarines
Tony ,   Brooklyn, New York   (09.10.11)
Turkey announced earlier this week a new plan to convert some of its fleet to short range submarines. They will only be capable of diving but Turkey full of bravado wants to show the world it's new invention. The only foreseeable problem is that the rapid conversion of it's ships will require Israeli help. Israel for its part has assured the US and Turkey it is very prepared to assist in the conversion process. And who says that Israel and Turkey will cease all military cooperation?
30. Erdogan - wisdom means thinking
