2. 'will the world be wise enough to avert such catastophe?
tiki ,   belgium   (09.11.11)
No, she won't. In the G7 meeting over the week end, it was discussed (and decided?) to pour in MORE MONEY for this 'o so succesfull Arab Spring. Europe is bankrupt, but there IS money for this failed project. About this new Terror State on Israel's doorstep....the argument is quit simple: Is it 'good for the Jews /// don't do it! Is it 'bad for the Jews/// full steam ahead!
3. The Arab spring?what about the Coptic churches burned???
Anna M Sedda ,   Rome-Italy   (09.11.11)
The article is perfectly right;news push for Arab spring for lack of news.but is seems like you forget that before the Egyptians destroy the Israel ambassy, they destroy a few Christian churches and kill innocent people, that did not harm anybody... Egypt is left in the hand of a few hundred of Muslims that have nothing to do in their life, than killing Jews and Christians, just for the sake of it Worse, without been punish for any of this acts... Muslims are racist,no matter what...
4. In all fairness: we have Israelis walking hand in hand with
tom ,   tel aviv   (09.11.11)
the Arabs chanting: "No to Apartheid Israel", what do we expect from the brainwashed westerners, really?! If the Local Left-wing Lunatics, born& raised in Zion are that imbecillic (most of the followers of High Culture& Arts are) what is my case against opinion of Frau Schmidt from say,Berlin? If the radio station called "Galeyi Tzahal" is just a tad less radical than "Al Jezeera" what can I say to my European cousins? If Mr.Soros conforms to a definition of simple antisemitic puppet of anti-Israeli, Islamic forces, who can I blame amongst the Gentiles? It's a bummer, yes it is!
5. Duh
Susan ,   Israel   (09.11.11)
Anyone who thought otherwise was letting their ideology trump reality. I cannot believe any major policy group was actually foolish enough to believe thjat these states would not devolve into terror-supporting states.
6. One has to be totally blind, deaf and stupid
Tahl   (09.11.11)
or alternatively, a rabid Israel-hater - to use the term "Arab spring" to describe the anarchy, zealotry and vicious hate to Israel, currently raging in the Arab world. The sudden newfound freedom will not make the Arab hate toward us magically disappear. It is a deep-seeded hatred, sown over decades of malicious antisemitic propaganda and blood libels. It is a war of cultures.
7. 1000% Correct
leo ,   nyc   (09.11.11)
The real question remains as to why the West so vigorously supported the Arab Spring right from the beginning- we will all pay dearly for such simplistic thinking!
8. Yigal Walt's article will not be reprinted in the NYT.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (09.11.11)
I'll bet even the Huffington Post will ignore it. The Washington Post? Not a shot. CNN, BBC ??? No, not likely. And here we have the real problem. The Western media is brain-dead. The ''experts'' from academia are lefty apologists for Islam or have been bought off by Saudi money. Politicians are steeped in political correctness & multi-culturalist BS. Nonetheless, very good job by Yigal Walt.
9. This was clear to me, wayback in march

10. To Susan: Its Not Being Naive, but Pragmatic
Noah Lev ,   HollywoodUSA   (09.11.11)
To Leo: the reason is simple, its called being pragmatic. We did not support the Egyptian street until, it was obvious the army would not protect Mubarak. In Libya, Moammar still leaves a bad taste..was against the Israeli treaties, furnished backing to terrorist groups, and was disliked by many of his own people. His close friendship with black Africa, precluded Arab League support. He was making nuke reactors..(hidden in a huge mountain). In other countreis, there is a Sunni-Shia problem..as in Iraq, and Syria. But both regimes have Muslim support..and are not subject to US/NATO strikes for obvious reasons. Think about it. Tunisia is a small innocous country. Bahrain is also ruled by a minorty group. Turkey, Egypt, Iran, are becoming more radical...in spite of some who are dissenting. We in the West are straddling the fences...siding with the ultimate winners. England made a teraty with the Reich..and they were bombed and almost invaded. Russia signed a treaty, and was invaded, with 25m deaths. The Muslims are telling US what we want to hear..and reaping the wind.
11. Sorry
Egyptian and Proud ,   Cairo, Egypt   (09.11.11)
I'm So Sorry...it's all Mubarak's Fault...During the era of Al-Saadat (The egyptian president who made the peace treaty) we didn't hate israel nor we hated Al-Saadat....but this hate to Israel these days came from our Hatred to Mubarak who was an Ally to Israel and being a Dictator and oppresor to his people in the same time.....Those Riots who stromed the embassy were just a bunch of mobsters and they are not the real protestors who overthrown Mubarak on 25th Jan..amazingly that those riots do not even include personnel of the Brotherhood party....This stupid Riot was made to put Egypt in critical situation so to distract Honest Egyptians from the Trials of the Old Regime of Mubarak and his Minions..
12. From the tone
Philos ,   Herzliya   (09.11.11)
It sounds like Walt is lamenting that the Europeans and America not help suppress all these revolts a'la Bashar Assad style, eh? Even though in previous op-eds he lambasted the West for not intervening there. When are you Rightists in Israel going to see that the West has genuinely changed? All that crap they spout off about human rights and democracy they actually believe in it. They engage in imperialism but imperialism of the norm and not just of the material. If Walt doesn't expect America and Europe to put their boots on the necks of the Arabs then come up with a solution... perhaps, Israel from the Nile to the Euphrates Mr Walt?
13. Arab spring and i agree #8
meghan ,   israel   (09.11.11)
its a modern day crusade without the crosses! They have promised to take over and Europe, even USA had better get their act together while its going on Autumn and winter, before it really is too late. Is Israel the only sane country with its eyes wide open to what is happening....maybe that why they dont like us, we call it as we see it.
14. Get it out there.....#8
Joe ,   London uk   (09.11.11)
It's our duty to ensure that this article is seen by the western and seemingly "democratic" societies. in truth, the western countries are well aware of the truths of the Arab spring uprisings but are unable or rather, unwilling to relate it to the effects it is and will have on Israel. They are all too busy worrying about their own countries and in truth, don't give a, about israel

19. Ten Years after 9/11 the West does the radicals' work
Marcella   (09.11.11)
- While Iraq was in no way connected to 9/11, the US attacked that oil-rich country, which was a bulwark against Iran. It destabilized and radicalized it. The number of casualties - Arab and American - has been enormous. The removal of Sadam helped bellicose Iran to rise as superpower in the region. - On the night following the 9/11 attacks, the US government spirited the Saudis out of the country, although most of the terrorists implicated in the attack hailed from Saudi Arabia. The Saudis have never had to answer to the fact that it's their ideology that incites terror against the West the most. - There was nothing spontaneous about the 2011 Arab Spring. It was financed and planned by operatives connected to the US government and NATO. Western "advisors" were already on the ground months ago. It was aimed at removing stable tyrants and replacing them with radicals belonging to Al Qaeda in the case of Libya, and the Muslim Brotherhood in the case of Egypt. This was not done inadvertently. The media was openly reporting who those leaders were and detailing their background. The US said never mind and plunged ahead, arming and assisting those radicals in every possible way. - The War on Terror has been diverted against peaceful Americans such as air travelers, Tea Party sympathizers, gun owners, and war vets. Regular citizens are losing their rights. - 9/11 rescue and recovery workers are treated as suspected terrorists, having to pass an FBI terrorist check before being allowed health aid. The final insult was to exclude them from the 9/11 anniversary commemoration. - Muslims enjoy special protected status in the USA. Their ideology is overlooked. Several individuals connected to the Muslim Brotherhood have top advisory roles within the White House and other government departments. - US and EU diplomacy has been turned not on bellicose ME regimes, but on besieged little Israel. - The PA and Gaza, two representatives of radical Islam (refer to the PLO charter) are relentlessly portrayed as minorities suffering from Israeli occupation who need to be given statehood at the expense of Jewish land. - The US government has tried to effect regime change in Israel too. The latest mass demonstrations in Israel were also organized by Americans closely connected to the US Democratic Party, such as Stanley Greenberg. - So ten years after 9/11 the situation is more confusing than ever, with Western governments, particularly the USA, siding with radicals and turning against peaceful non-Muslim citizens and against democratic Israel.
20. Excellent article, 100% correct
BJ ,   NY, USA   (09.11.11)
21. #11 Muslim Brothers (who Obama supports) among attackers
Sue ,   Los Angeles   (09.11.11)
The leaders were Jama'a al-Islamiya, the Egyptian branch of Al Qaeda (they have ties to the "blind sheik" Omar Abdel Rahman who is in prison for masterminding the 1993 World Trade Center bombing), along with the Muslim Brotherhood and the Egyptian Students April 6 Movement. It appears the jihadists planned attacks on the Israeli Embassy and New York this weekend of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The blame for what happened in Cairo sits squarely on the shoulders of Barack Hussein Obama. He pushed out Mubarak and permitted these radicals to take over Egypt. The Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty is hanging by a thread after the blowing up of gas pipelines in the Sinai, the attacks on Israeli citizens in Eilat and now on the Embassy. Despite what the New York Times reported, the Muslim Brotherhood (founders of Hamas) is most definitely involved, but the NYT is trying to cover up that fact as not to hurt Obama's reelection, as the US President has been helping the MB/Arab Spring and recently his administration has openly expressed support for the MB.
22. Several things that are now in the making
Alexander ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (09.11.11)
USA is a falling star. America is struggling with huge debts. The European Union is a failure. The Euro currency is failing, many European countries are bankrupt and they have accumulated debts that go far beyond their actual GDPs and the European nations are dismantling their military capabilities according to their misaligned reality detached ideological conviction of the lack of necessity of strong national defences due to a perception of a "safer" world. Even great European nations like Germany, Italy, France and United Kingdom cannot fully match the military capabilities of Israel. Only two European states have nukes: France and UK. China's GDP (total GDP, not GDP per capita - China is still and will still be for the forseeable future, a very poor country) will most likely surpass USA's GDP in 10-30 years. China is growing remarkably fast - and has nukes. India is growing remarkably fast - and has nukes. Both countries are producing a remarkable high number of civil engineers, doctors and scientists. Both the Chinese and Indians have high opinions about Jews and Israel - even if the Chinese and Indian governments suck up to the Arab regimes for oil. Neither the Chinese nor the Indians like Moslems. Anti-Semitism is not very common in China nor in India. China and India should gradually replace USA as Israel's closest ally. Most likely, Israel will create and seek to create a future alliance with USA, India and China to offset Islam, left leaning Latin America and Jew hating old Europe. The Moslem countries in the Middle East are falling apart into chaos and anarchy. Many of them will develop into an Iranian-style theocratic system. Russia is investing more money into their defense. However, the Russian army is still hopelessly unmodern and old fashioned with an old junkyard of old Soviet equipment. It is remarkable that huge Russia had difficulties defeating Georgia a few years ago. Russia's population is dwindling due to higher death rates then fertility rates. Russian Caucasia will have a Moslem majority very soon. Russians fear that the Chinese will take over the depopulated parts of Siberia. Russia is desperately clinging on to the old glory days but their power is superficial and is based on oil, natural gas and nuclear missiles. Otherwise, Russia is not a future superpower. Japan's population is dwindling and China's GDP has surpassed that of Japan. Israel is a rising star in every aspect. Israel's Jewish population is rising by 1.5% every year as a result of natural growth - even without any aliyah. Israel is establishing for itself a more prominent and also dominating position within medicine, computer technology, computer software, military equipment and military excellence - coupled with newly found natural gas resources and newly built desalination plants, higher and better education, stable and secure state finances, stringent bank policies. Israel is a rising star. All these things are happening as we speak. I foresee that Israel will have a bright future. However: Israel is also facing great risks in the Middle East: Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Gaza, Sinai, Al Qaida, Syria and so on. The trick is how to offset or even get rid of Israel's enemies while assuring Israel's well being. Assuring and ensuring a big Israel - without any Arabs or "Palestinians" is a good start. As Europe grows weaker, and the USA is struggling with their debts, the likelihood of Israel being able to get rid of the Arabs and the "Palestinians" will grow year by year. This is a good start but not enough. Israel needs to deal a fatal blow to its Moslem neighbors.
23. The EU and US idiots want an Arab spring
Chris Rettenmoser ,   Bayerisch Gmain Germ   (09.11.11)
but the Arabs have not changed their hateful thinking, their spring is nothing more than a bad joke...I am sure, that the Egyptians are still the fans of Mohammed Atta !
24. To Sue: Thanks Livni for Nothing
Noah Lev ,   HollywoodUSA   (09.12.11)
To Sue: I am an avout Republican Jew. lIke so many of my fellow US Jews, I voted straight Democratic ticket for decades. As the liberals in Congress became less sympathetic to Israel's strength, and understood how the country was going backwards with its debts, I changed. 911 proved the few who understood Islams goal, the caliphate, a M.E. w/o Jews and Christians (infidels), and if possible, another Holocaust a la WW2. After Iraq was invaded, the Demo liberals began a full fledged atack on Bush's policies. He became the war monger. Yet 911 was designed to kill 50,000 New Yorkers that day. What price 50,000 lives and hundreds of thousands affected? Now, Obama is playing it down the middle. His 67 lines are arbirrary and capricious. They are not borders as we know, but simply the wars result ( Egypt forced the issue by kicking out the UN and violating Israel's sea rights). Now, we are told that Israel 's failure to talk to the Pales, has caused the UN bid. Yet at no time has Israel refused to talk. Facts are denied and twsited. US reporters in Jerusalem use leftist sources as proof of Israel's negative PR. Livni, in any other society, would be a "Jane Fonda" subject to arrest and more. Can Israel stop it? Yes, by declaring temporary marshal law. In Sept, thanks to Israel's leftists and aggerssive Islam..this will come to a head. Thanks Livni, for nothing. Yet we Jews still support Demos by 85% and 90% of our gelt. Will we ever learn? We tolerated Mubarak and gave him 2b/year in aid. We forgave their debt to us, in the billions after the Gulf War. We provided him with the latest F16s. We afforded him little support, while to the north, Syria is still butchering its own people, with nothing done by US of any meaning. Thanks Obama.
25. Free at last, free at last...

Two weeks of Woodstock and we're free at last. Woodstock in Tahrir Square didn't turn out exactly the way the hippies wanted, did it?
26. The universe doesn't revolve around Israel
Mark ,   SF, USA   (09.12.11)
Because the Arab Spring isn't all about what's best for Israel, this means the Arab world "is woefully unprepared for democracy" and "the downfall of brutal tyrants" will be "followed by greater evils." Evil for whom? Certainly not for Egyptians, or Libyans, or Tunisians. They're all quite happy with their revolution, thank you very much. Got a news flash for you, Israel: The universe doesn't revolve around you. You've brought your troubles on yourselves, and there WILL be an independent Palestine whether you like it or not.
27. maybe they learned from Iranian revolution
Lemmings Hotline ,   sd usa   (09.12.11)
Most of the iranians thought that they would have some freedom under the Ayatollahs but instead got brutal repression. Maybe the Arabs will learn from these painful lessons, as the Iranians are fighting for their freedom again. If their new democracieswant to push for war with Israel, then they will have to learn this lesson over again as well.
28. #26 Mark from SF: What?
Yitzhak ,   Emek Yizra'el,Israel   (09.12.11)
It seems to me that when your country's embassy is attacked and nearly ransacked by a howling mob out for blood, one tends to take that parochially. When terrorists traipse across your border, shoot up a bus and fire an anti-tank missile at a civilian car, that kind of makes one stand up and take notice. We don't need any finger wagging from San Francisco, where I lived for much of my adult life before aliyah, on what we should or should not be concerned about. I don't doubt someday there will be an independent Palestine, I only doubt what kind of state it is going to be. Much of that depends on the results of this Arab Spring, which may in fact turn into an Islamist Winter. If so, I sure as hell don't want Hamas or worse sitting in Qibyah or Budrus firing surface to air missiles at Ben Gurion International. But, then again, you would probably just accuse us of being self-centered again as our planes fall out of the sky and our cities burn. Silly us.
29. Arab Spring
Journo ,   Washington,DC   (09.13.11)
There never was an Arab Spring. Just an excuse to radicalize populations against the west. Will you ever see articles about that in America? Not a chance. Not a network approved storyline and not very PC to doubt the Arabs.
