61. Sabri from turkey...?
sammy ,   canterbury UK   (09.16.11)
what do you mean by "turkey is not greece"...? of course it is! the turks arrived on Greek land in the 6th century and stole it. of course turkey is greece and one day will return to greece!
62. Turkey's economy
Jorge ,   Israel/USA/Argentina   (09.16.11)
It is a simple equation to see. Most of the Turkish people agreed that "the consumer" is blooming. The math is simple: you spend more that you make = red numbers. The blooming spent will be seen later as red numbers. There is nothing here against Turkey. There is a warning sign regarding its economy. We are saying, we have a house, car, vacation, a yate, etc. We are dennying how much we owe. The external debt for a country is 270,700,000 and growing. At certain point and living in a finantial economy, the work force will be shrunk. The lack of oportunities will bring more debt and less income. Here is how Turkey's economy may collapse.
63. The Kurds will get him. Many Turks in jail
Sami ,   New York, USA   (09.16.11)
The Kurds will get him. Meanwhile many of his army are in jail, journalists in jail and Kurdish politicians in jail.
64. Metin #23 you're kidding right?
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (09.16.11)
Try using a search engine and use reliable sources. For unemployment, and trade deficit try Turkish Statistical Institute. GNP and debt ratios are equally available with about a 10 second search. Do you need everything in the world handed to you?
65. Heard these comments before
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (09.16.11)
Not too many years ago we were being told that Ireland had managed to rewrite the rules of economics and their economy was the fasted growing in the world and was totally unstoppable. Well I think we know the results of that. Claims of large Turkish Reserve - well yes they have one, but it is actually far smaller than the Israeli Reserve and our economy is far better balanced and we still aren't too comfortable about it.
66. #42 - Sarah full of hot air...
Emre ,   Istanbul   (09.16.11)
You say Turkey will be kicked out of NATO, but only recently NATO chose Turkey to install its antimissile shield!!! This means long term commitment to NATO. Ha ha ha...So much for Turkey leaving NATO. An this shows how you are full of hot air!
67. Turkeys economy
adam poznanski ,   Deutschland   (09.16.11)
Metin: Dream on!
68. BREAD AND CIRCUSES
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (09.16.11)
This is almost EXACTLY what Britain's New Labour government did to keep the British satisfied....now look at the bust!!!! Another good reason for keeping Turkey outside the EU. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
69. To some of the turkish commenters
the foreign currency ,   schlat, germany   (09.16.11)
Screaming "lie" won't help, being in denial does not solve your giant huge problems.
70. Bubble exploding you say ??
Sabri Karama ,   Mombasa, Kenya   (09.16.11)
They said the same thing about China 2 years ago (The american & the Jews). Wishful thinking... keep dreaming.
71. #3 - looks like it came from an economic analyst
William ,   Israel   (09.16.11)
with world bank figures. Definitely more credibility than your leaders have been able to muster in their recent tirades. Some how, the words "because I said so", doesn't really provide any definitive proof for your baseless accusations. This article does explain the fascist desire for Erdogan to grab E. Med energy deposits through threats and coercion against Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon, and supporting Gazan terrorists.
72. #8 - Turkey credit rating is also BB
William ,   Israel   (09.16.11)
While Israel's is A+, despite the security threats against her.
73. #31 - still really bad, Emre
William ,   Israel   (09.16.11)
What's worse in that your country's GDP depends a lot on remittances earned in Europe by Turks and wired to family back home. This is a bad situation. For example, Mexico's GDP is heavily based on this and if the US ended illegal immigration Mexico's GDP would drop by 47% overnight. A few percentage points either way will not change the conclusion that you're soon to be screwed!
74. #30 - Israel's credit rating increased due to fiscal policy
William ,   Israel   (09.16.11)
notice our very low % debt to GDP in the article. Who cares if we have social protests in the street (which have remained very peaceful, mind you)? Turkey's "consumerism via govt" policy doesn't work, as proven by Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Ireland. Yet the US wants this model and so does some Israelis. In the end, even without the massive influx of wealth from our gas fields, Israel will conservatively provide more social benefits (for everyone - Jews and Arab Israeli alike) while adhering to its winning fiscal policy. Sadly, Turkey will continue down the path of doom, threatening its neighbors with extortion for revenue. It seems only Erdogan and Guy Bechor understand the crap Turkey is really in.
75. To: No. 66
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (09.16.11)
That's for convenience's sake until the proper arrangements are concluded with certain former Soviet republics in central Asia. Have you ever stopped to wonder why no Turk is actually allowed to operate any of the really sensitive NATO military hardware? NATO knows perfectly well that eventually there will be a showdown with Iran. NATO also knows perfectly well that there is every reason to be wary of Turkey's relationship with Iran. NATO does not want its top of the line military technology to end up in Iranian hands, and Turkey has proven itself very untrustworthy in the past. As soon as agreements can be satisfactorily concluded with a Central Asian country (without admitting them to NATO), Turkey is toast. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha, Turkey is not now, and pretty much never has been, a full-fledged member of NATO. Turkey is allowed in to mop the floors, scrub the toilets, but that's about it. Just a useful houseboy.
76. Is the author insane?
Selin ,   Istanbul   (09.16.11)
When Israeli people demand their rights from their current government, this author prefers to write a so called article about economical situation in Turkey instead of Israel! Why? It smells like a subjective analyze for directing people out of reality with full hatred.
77. In 1999, economists called the US economy unstoppable
William ,   Israel   (09.16.11)
money was flowing freely and unemployment was the lowest it could go - just under 4%. Economist said the US was a powerhouse, despite some others warning since 1996 that the stock market was artificially inflated and would correct itself soon. And that's what happened. In 2002, despite a hard landing, economist were saying global real estate was a good investment and would continue to grow. In the US, the Democrats pushed a policy allowing cheap credit, without background checks, for people to buy homes with. The same type of credit extension policy the Turk's are using. Since 2001, people warned of the housing bubble and a market correction again. In 2008, it happened and plunged the globe into a deep economic recession. And because heavily socialist countries with lots of social spending relied on strong capitalist countries, they went down even quicker - e.g. Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy. And Turkey believes though they mimic the same precepts for a hard fall, they will somehow still grow? One must think of the Greek mythology story around Icarus.
78. #66 - but NATO won't give Turkey cover if Erdogan attacks
William ,   Israel   (09.16.11)
If Erdogan threatens and attacks in Med neighbors, NATO is not obligated to rush to Turkey's aid in any conflict. The Charter only relates to Turkey being attacked unilaterally. So if Turkey threatens or instigates anyone, and is attack, NATO will stand down. The EU has warned him of this already. So - yes, we thank you for hosting the early-warning radar system, which seems to have pissed off Iran now.
79. #57 - and see what, mass consumerism?
William ,   Israel   (09.16.11)
The author already stated that Turkey's consumerism has increased giving the false sense of a growing economy. The real story is in the balance books at the Treasury. How often do you get down to that Ministry?
80. #7 - Israel did offer to apologize and pay restitution
William ,   Israel   (09.16.11)
not that they morally or legally were obligated to do so. Turkey rejected it several times, and made demands to lift the legal Gaza blockade and several other demands to curtail IDF operational ability that infringes on Israel's sovereignty. Do you often make friends with those who want to abuse and rape you?
81. #14 - looks like you missed a decimal point there
William ,   Israel   (09.16.11)
typical accounting error. It's not 90% of GDP, it's 9% of GDP. 2011 is estimated to be just under 11%.
82. That explains a lot!
Oleg ,   USA   (09.16.11)
Otherwise, why would they so rapidly changed their policies. Now they have an enemy and they will claim from now on, that Israel and world Jewery are the root of their problems. Very easy and very productive in terms to stay in power. Who cares about ordinary Turks. Erdogan? Not him for sure. Poor idiots.
83. #33- must be the reason Erdogan is so cozy with Hamas
William ,   Israel   (09.16.11)
He needs a loan from a population of like-minded individuals that has almost 1st world standards of living and no real economy.
84. #70 - yeah, no racism in your comment, Sabri
William ,   Israel   (09.16.11)
"Americans and Jews" - hmm, interesting how these two groups seem to collude on everything you deem "evil" in the world. I heard many people speak about China potentially heading to problems, mostly because their labor costs are rising with a growing middle class, their fixed currency is experiencing pressure, and the fall of consumer nations like the US would hurt the Chinese economy. That is playing out and we see jobs leaving China and heading to Vietnam and Cambodia. But it wasn't Americans who only said this - most global economists said the same. When exactly did Jews come out with an opinion? I'm one. I don't remember being asked.
85. #76 It's spoken about ad naseum in Israel
William ,   Israel   (09.16.11)
so why would Guy Bechor want to repeat an over-done story here? The issue of Turkey is for two reasons: 1) people are speaking about Turkey more thanks to the antics of your PM trotting around the Mediterranean, trying to be the new leader of Arabs and sow fear in Israel and Cyprus. 2) Erdogan is spending a lot of time threatening its neighbors about gas fields Turkey is not even close to. It makes a lot of people wonder, especially in Europe. A shaky economy is an appropriate topic then.
86. Is this a case of the Pasha has no clothes
Ivan Benyeor ,   TA Israel   (09.17.11)
87. Turkeys economy
adam poznanski ,   Deutschland   (09.17.11)
Metin: Dream on!
88. oh
Yavuz ,   Zurich   (09.17.11)
shut up already!
89. Hopefully Turkey will go down the gutter !
Chris Rettenmoser ,   Bayerisch Gmain Germ   (09.17.11)
90. Turkey and Germany
Arnold ,   Canada   (09.17.11)
It is quite interesting to read the German take on this story. They say Turkey's economy is just fine and do not believe what you are reading followed by and maybe then they will go back to Turkey. See Germany has the largest Turkish population of any EU country. Goes back to the German alliance with the Ottomons. The same way China owns large US debt is the same way Germany owns Turkish debt. How long can Germany prop up the Euro as its EU members falter.
