2. I remember reading "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi.
In the book, Satrapi describes about how she once saw the Japanese drama show "Oshin" translated into Persian on Iranian TV. Its about a poor female hairdresser named Oshin who travels to the city and falls in love a man whose mother was opposed to their marriage.
At first, Satrapi didn't understand why the mother hated hairdressers so much. Later, she got to know a girl who worked in media who told her that Oshin was actually a Geisha, and since her profession (practically prostitution) did not meet Islamic morals, the TV station's director decided she'd be a hairdresser.
