natural resources belong to both communities. (norther and southern cyprus). also be benefiting both the community.before the negotiations concluded between the two communities and after the drilling.so the EU can not say anything to Turkey.reasonable and justified...
62. #23 - not true...

Turkey has concluded that Northern Cyprus is not occupied and can act as an independent entity from Southern Cyprus. Per that point, drilling of Southern Cyprus does not obligate Northern Cyprus to its riches any more than wealth in South Korea does not belong to North Korea as well. Now if Turkey were to follow Intl Law, and end the illegal occupation, Cyprus would be united and there wouldn't be an issue about sharing resources because they'd be one sovereign nation. However, the end game is clear. Through Occupied Cyprus, Turkey hopes to gain access to the EU and access to E. Med mineral riches by siphoning off wealth shared with that part of the island by The Republic of Cyprus. Why else would Turkey send war ships to confront an oil exploration platform SOUTH of Cyprus?
63. #37 - the court decision is based on Cyprus as one entity

further negating Turkey's claim to the island and their current occupation. In line with that, the Cypriots could place a portion of the wealth in an escrow account for the North, releasing it upon unification, with a clause that negates any attempt to share the wealth with Turkey. In that unification clause, Turks who arrived AFTER 1974 must leave the island and repatriate to Turkey. That's Intl Law! Turkey's stance today is to use Occupied Cyprus as a foothold to siphon mineral wealth back into the Turkish economy. Just like the Brits did in placing friendly-tribe govts in Arab oil-rich nations after WWI.

Do you think, the Turkish North of Cyprus would do the same if they (and their Turkish brethren) had discovered the gas field?
65. #53 - Turkey is showing the same hypocrisy
William ,   Israel   (09.20.11)
and since its occupation of Cyprus is not accepted by anyone, the issue of recognizing a sovereign Northern Cyprus is a moot point. Cyprus' position regarding energy wealth is correct while the North is occupied, and can be used to unify the island and throw off the yoke of Turkish occupation. That includes the repatriation of Turkish immigrants to the island back to Turkey per Intl Law. For their part, Cyprus can circumvent the criticism like your's by setting aside some energy wealth in an escrow account until the unification occurs. However, with wealth sharing comes cost sharing, and N. Cyprus will be responsible for their share of the bills.

Permit me to weigh in. Since the Turks did not, in fact, discover the gas field, there is no point in debating what they might or might not have done. The law governing discovery and exploitation of mineral wealth in the sea is quite clear -- finders, keepers. Turkey can bluff and bluster all it wants; it does not have a leg to stand on. For that matter, since the exploration is all going on in the Greek south, Turkey has no claim. They don't even recognize the Cypriot government in the Greek portion of the island. They can scarcely claim to be allowed to share in the wealth of mineral reserves, all of which lies off the southern (Greek) part of the island. Israel will never allow that to happen. I'm pretty sure that 95% of the countries in the world will not allow that to happen, either.

He pissed off everybody, just to be a show-off "hero" to his Arab neighbours, who are undergoing turmoil and are more likely to grab every straw of economic help offered by the West.

I notice Mary didn t answer your question so i try to do so. I am a Greek Cypriot refugee since 1974 Turkey invided my country. Perhaps you dont understant the situation here. We are a small counrty with around 800,000 population. Above as is Turkey (80,000,000)which occupied almost the half of the island sending settlers every year offering them our fathers homes for free. Turkey want the hole island of course and the face of Turkey you see today, we see it every day in the local news since i was born. We men have a military riffle each one at home, in case Turkey decide to attack us.(I have my own since 1993) Good men do nothing? Go back a couple of years before the gas and all these. Who knows Cyprus? USA used to see the actor face of Turkey and now can clearly see what we see all these years. When we try to buy air defence missles 10 years ago everybody in the region was against us (including Turkey of course). We pay for the missles which never came here. Is it optimistic go in a war with a NATO country such as Turkey or stupidity? As you understand this issue is not something in the second page. Just try to imagine 1/250 of USA with basic armor try to survive beside Nazist Germany for example. You can imagine it not feel it. Turks are not Germans of course(historically are worst). Germans recognizes their mistakes Turks dont. Turks are not christians as we are. To kill children and leave their parents alive is something normal to them.(One example that happened in 1974 which Turks called peacefull reaction) Yes i can live with Turkish Cypriots(besides they were Greeks that get to islam by force) as my country was before but the problem is the imperialistic face of Turkey that will never change. If USA was a small country around here Turks would have put it on their plans. Politics and diplomacy is for countries like mine but if i have to die to get my father s home back, i can fill my riffle right now. All i want to is my children have the right to live on this rock in the middle of the sea peacefully. Can USA , Israel, or Russia really help me on that? I dont want other people die for me. I can stand by their side. For my reason, which is not oil, money or gas. I want to see my country free what do you think? If you heard my country involved with Hamas, Iran and so on it is the other side (occupied) that do, or Turkish probaganda. Jizz i am orthodox christian. And even if our politicians doesnt do steps you think they should is because of all above. We live in fear but we have the right by our side. As for Erdogan, when a politician act like this imagine the local Turk. Our race give democracy and civilazation among others. Turks offer bruttality and violence. You can choose. Even on our peak as a race we didn t make any genocide. And we Greeks attack or been attacked by larger armies almost all the time.In the opposition Turks attack only when they are sure and outrun at least 5 times the enemy. For God sake at wwII they afraid to choose a side. I am proud of who i am. Others must feel shame.
