30 Talkbacks for this article
1. Clearly, the PLO, by approaching the UN...
Jehudah Ben-Israel ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (09.19.11)
... are about to turn formally their backs on UN Security Council Resolution, 242, on the basis of which the entire peace process has been based, and on the basis of which acceptance the PLO was ushered into the process in the first place. Also, the PLO is about to commit a major violation of the Oslo Accords, 1993 and 1995, on the basis of which the PLO was permitted to set up the Palestinian Authority. Thus, the objection to what is perceived by so many that the PLO in essence has been involved all of these years in an activity of deception: It has received everything it asked for, but has refused to make any concession, any compromise that is expected in any form of negotiations. Indeed, the PLO refuses, categorically, to accept Israel's right to be, to exist as the independent nation-state of the Jewish people, and it objects categorically to accepting a peace treaty as the end of the conflict and the end of all future demands. The way out is of course for the sides to return to the negotiating table, clean handed and in good faith, and without preconditions begin to talk peace.
2. Sure gonna be shocked when they are rejected.
Levi ,   Karmiel   (09.19.11)
This is going to do nothing but maybe start a third intifata
3. To n° 1
Marcela Araújo ,   With you, Brazil   (09.19.11)
What a text ! ... You're right, clear negotiations are the best way for a successful compromise.
4. To n° 2
Marcela Araújo ,   Brazil   (09.19.11)
I am afraid, you're right...
5. Palestinian action will unite Muslims to attack US
Joe ,   USA   (09.19.11)
When the Palestinians fail in their bid for statehood at the UN, Muslims will unite to attack the United States. The Obama Administration, US Congress and/or the US Senate needs to send a devastating blow to the Palestinians for their actions. Their needs to be serious consequences for their actions.
6. when Tel Aviv is ready, Ramallah will be ready!
Noah ,   USA   (09.19.11)
when Tel Aviv is ready, Ramallah will be ready! " Why are U.S. and foreign embassies located in Tel Aviv?
7. No more compromises
Joe tango ,   Usa   (09.19.11)
20 years of Israeli one sided concessions have led to this point. NO MORE COMPROMISES.
8. continuation of the war of independence
J1 ,   EARTH   (09.19.11)
this is nothing more than a continuation of the 1948 war of independence. Unfortunately the Arabs have the oil and the population to sway the negotiating parameters. Israel must do what has to do and not commit suicide. I stand with Israel. Giving GAZA back unconditionally was a major concession and a bold gesture.
9. #5 easier then you think
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (09.20.11)
If Obama wanted, he could easily thwart Abbas. All Obama has to do is inform Abbas that if he damages American interests, Obama will order investigation of where funds donated by the US have disappeared. Abbas know that the publication of his Swiss bank accounts will give Hamas the legitimacy to Tahrir him faster then you can say embezzlement.
10. Major Screw Up
GideonReader ,   USA   (09.20.11)
Beging the Pals to return to the table is a major error. Who cares if they want to implode or not? Everything that they have done is like watching a junkie OD, or a suicidal mental case step off the balcocny to fall umptiy upm floors to the pavement. Let them push the plunger; make the jump.
11. Response to Joe
Jack ,   USA   (09.20.11)
The failed bid for statehood is a publicity stunt plain and simple, with a US veto coming they don't have a chance to gain nationhood. But to think that the US needs to send a devastating blow to the Palestinians for these actions in pretty much insane. This isn't a act of violence and until violence starts we should remain level-headed.
12. rfds: WHERE IS THE ISRAELI PUBLIC RELATIONS ?
Dave ,   Montreal Canada   (09.20.11)
The Palestinians have now adopted a new slogan "Refusing to Die Silently", to show the world that Israeli settlers attack and kill palestinians. This is absurd, however the world will believe them, as there is no Israeli response to refute this lie. Palestinians attack Israelis. They send in suicide bombers. They have terrorist attacks. They lie.Repeatedly. It's time to set the facts straight, so the world's population is not mislet by these falsehoods. If Israel doesn't mount a proper Public Relations campaign, people around the world will believe the palestinian lies.
13. to no 1
Salma, ,   Palestine   (09.20.11)
You can say all kind of things that you like but the reality is that we will get a state because the word agrees with our aim.Of course we want peace-it would be stupid not to.We know that Israel is stronger military than us -but that means nothing because nearly all countries support us.Resoluton 242 and the Oslo Accords mean nothing any more.
14. Foolin' no-one, Netanyahu
Michael Steiner ,   Bahrain   (09.20.11)
You had a chance to advance peace by extending the settlement construction moratorium two years ago; instead, you let it run rampant. You insisted we had no peace partner in the Palestinians, but made sure the Palestinians had no peace partner in us. Give up your ludicrous and embarrassing charade. We are not fish and our memories DO span back over the three years of your pathetic administration. You and your henchmen (the likes of the detestable Lieberman and Yishai) are a bunch of spineless liars who will say anything to anybody and promise the world to all and sundry, but end up doing nothing. A Palestinian state is coming, whether now or next year or the year after that. Plug in. We can either be a part of its creation, or it can be foisted on us.
15. I do not understand
wiz of iz ,   montreal canada   (09.20.11)
I do not understand why a good portion of this world is ready to award statehood and be willing to let a leopard change his spots just because he says he will. The coveted reward surely must be based on higher principles than that.. Prove to the world that you are a non beligerant world citizen and then and only then give your gambit a go and show the world you are worthy and you will be accepted with open arms. Unfortunately your spots blatantly spell out a world without Jews in your ultimate reality.Earth has enough of these regimes in place ,we do not need another one. You are just a pain in the Abbas.
16. no "Israel as Jewish State" no talk!
mary of Bethany ,   singapore   (09.20.11)
1967 lines and freeze all settlement construction? Palis as the 23 arab state, and 58 muslim state. BUT ZERO JEWISH STATE? how sincere can abbas be if denying Jewish State? so how could abbas propose to call Israel? the 24 arab state with jewish majority? drop dead and evaporate!
17. Direct tacks
boris ,   nyc, us   (09.20.11)
about peace should be with saudies and iranians, because "palestinians" are just cannon fodder in the war against Israel.
18. End draws near for Palestine scam.
Chaim ,   Israel   (09.20.11)
Just as a ponzi scam can only be maintained by a constant flow of cash from suckers; so fictional Palestine depends on a constant flow of cash from Western suckers. However, the West is starting to wise up. Donations to fictional Palestine are way down and plunging quickly. The jig is up. The end draws near for the Palestine scam. When the upcoming Palestine statehood bid blows sky high; like all the other Palestine bids; Palestine is toast. Enjoy it while it lasts, "Palestinians".
19. futile: has no useful result, inconsequential, frivolous
Not Convinced   (09.20.11)
Why are Netanyahu, Clinton, Ross, Blair, Obama and a long list of others running around like headless chickens trying to stop Abbas if his step is so "futile"? Why have these same people been selling the illusion of their desire for a 2-state solution, and are at the same time so opposed to it? Is it, by chance, that they are a bunch of "duplicitous bastards", to borrow a phrase from former UK FM Douglas Hurd?
20. Palestinian statehood and the end of the Israeli Occupation
Elias   (09.20.11)
The Israelis have had over sixty years to grant the Palestinians freedom from oppression and an independent state, instead they chose a policy of systematic land theft and settlements. If the Americans veto any proposal for an independent Palestinian state, then they know the price the Islamic world will exact from America and Israel for their greed and immorality.
21. I'll be heartbroken if Abbas doesn't apply
Norbus ,   Jerusalem   (09.20.11)
We will have our day once he is on the record to have applied, claiming Eretz Yisrael through revoking all agreements since 1947 We then annex the west bank, cede Gaza to egypt and fence them both off. We reclaim Sinai if Egypt wants to review the Carter guaranteed peace treaty
22. To Say Goodbye
Norbus ,   Jerusalem   (09.20.11)
23. #20
Millie ,   London UK   (09.20.11)
The only sane talkback on this page, thanks
24. Talk is cheap, Salma
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (09.20.11)
Does "Salma" represent the Palestinian street? Let's see: "We know that Israel is stronger military than us -but that means nothing because nearly all countries support us.Resoluton 242 and the Oslo Accords mean nothing any more. " 1) "nearly all countries support us". How nice. Support at the UN is one thing. Paying the bills is another. We already know that Arab League countries talk big, but don't give much money to the Pals. Who gives big? The U.S., EU and Japan and Israel. The Pals seem willing to piss off the first 3, and Israel will cut off transfer payments. Who will "support" the Pals with $$$? Iran? 2) "Resoluton 242 and the Oslo Accords mean nothing any more." So the Palestinians are now saying that international treaties and signed agreements are worthless. Well, that's ok, since we Israelis have been saying for years that the Pals have no respect for treaties, and their word cannot be trusted. Now we know. So the Pals will get a state? Will they be better off? It certainly does not look like it today, or even tomorrow. They will still have a state with 2 heads, Fatahstan and Hamastan. They will still be divided and without economic support and Israeli cooperation, there's a good chance for civil war in the west bank like they had in Gaza. Will Hamas win? Will Fatah survive? Will the Pals ever see elections again and have an "Arab Spring"? - well, all signs are that the Pals are heading back into yet another black hole of their own making.
25. to 24
john Darren ,   cairns-Australia   (09.20.11)
Excellent post Brian.Salma is one mixed up dude.
26. Move all Pals to JORDAN
Stop the conflict ,   Israel   (09.20.11)
THIS is the ONLY move that can bring PEACE. They must not live in Israel as a trojan horse. Across the river, with the necessary border protection. This could work.
27. #20 Elias (and Millie,20)
Zio ,   Gibraltar   (09.20.11)
Your ignorance is outstanding, your hate obvious." Over 60 years " brings us back to 1948, when the Arabs refused to accept the UN partition plan, one state for the Arabs, one for the Jews, and tried to destroy Israel. I'll let you into a little secret which applies as much now, as it did then. The "Palestinians" don't want a state alongside Israel, they want one instead of Israel.
28. To n° 7
Marcela Araújo ,   Brazil   (09.20.11)
Your will be done.
29. To n° 21
Marcela Araújo ,   Brazil   (09.20.11)
It was not a heartbroken... ... It was a breaking.
30. Post Friday Sep. 23rd.
Adam Neira ,   Melb, Australia   (09.20.11)
Will Israelis be able to enjoy Rosh Hashanah in peace and quiet on Sep. 28th ? No matter what happens over the coming days the lines of communication and trust must be kept open. A collapse of trust will prove disastrous for everyone. A long term vision and plan must be enunciated and accepted for the region.
