1. disproportionate hash sentence
nospam   (09.20.11)
The question is not that he is a spy or not, whether he did it for Israel or someone else first. He is certainly a spy and he deserved being punished. The question is the disproportionate hash unusual sentence and savage treatment of a fellow old Jew, that noone else with similar crime receives. Is it for being a Jew or spying for Israel makes no difference. Cas Weinberger, who's sole word to the judge apparently convinced the judge for current conviction term, admitted before his death that there was not much relevance in his case.
2. Got What He Deserves
Ari ,   Herzliya, Israel   (09.20.11)
He just wanted the attention and the blinded-by-their-politics extremists feed into that.
3. The Sentence is the MOST disproportionate ever
EZRA THE PROUD JEW ,   US-ISRAEL   (09.20.11)
-the US has ever doled out for such a case. Terrorists get lighter sentences: it was clear someone had an issue with Jews and still do (as usual). Yeah, if it's true, pollard is an immature fool but he NEVER endangered the US in any way: "spying" for a friendly nation is so common, perhaps we should toss every MI5 agent who visits in the slammer: they're ALWAYS spying on us, ALWAYS. Big deal: pollard tossed a few Docs to Israel: as if Israel would ever intend harm to the US (and for the Jew-hating morons out there: NO, ISRAEL WOULD NEVER DO HARM TO THE US INTENTIONALLY, EVER...but ofcourse, convincing an anti-Semite of that is a total waste of time
4. I am a Zionist, however..
MerrillNY ,   New York, NY   (09.20.11)
..don't do the crime if you can't do the time. God bless America.
5. Did this
boris ,   nyc, us   (09.20.11)
agent Lydia worked with aldrich aimes?
6. Jonathan Pollard
Arnold-Canada ,   Canada   (09.20.11)
I have always felt that there was someting more to this story than we have been told all these years. This Ausralian detail is not it. Something is still missing. Both US and Israel are hiding something.
7. Gee, I wonder if...
Dovid ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.20.11)
Australia would have made him a citizen. And a cause celebre. Just another rightist issue that is B.S.
8. Lidya Timoshenko had permission, too.
Miron ,   USA   (09.20.11)
9. Old News
Ilan ,   Victoria, Australia   (09.20.11)
Why bring this up now? This stuff has been on the public record for a long time. If this is the only reason that those who want to keep Pollard in jail, it is particularly weak. He has spent decades in prison, much longer than many spies that worked for hostile states that actually caused serious harm to US interests. If those that oppose his release can come up with clear evidence why he deserves his long sentence, I will listen to the arguments and consider what is said, but rumors that are few years old don't fit this bill
10. Be lucky the USA didn't behead him
Dovid ,   Israel   (09.20.11)
You are upset b/c he got jail time? If it was Iran or any other Muslim country, they'd have beheaded him. So stop whining. He should count himself lucky.
11. The truth will out...
gerry ,   USA   (09.20.11)
Thank you for finally printing the truth about Jonathan Pollard. Finally some journalism instead of a cheering squad. He is no hero, just someone who wanted to play spy and make a lot of money.
12. He was helping a FRIENDLY country with information that it
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (09.20.11)
was LEGALLY entitled to have but the arab loving pigs in the US State Dept. were keeping critical info necessary for the defense of Israel from it. THAT, is the truth and a common, reasonable sentence would have been a few years but the Jew haters have had him there forever.
13. misinformation
Ethan Schwartz ,   Eilat   (09.20.11)
14. Article misses the point
thepoint   (09.20.11)
The point isn't whether or not Jonathan spied or for who, it's for being the only person in history to serve a life sentence for giving information to an allied country. Sheesh, with all the Congressman and officials calling for his release you think it wouldn't be such a big deal at this point. He served more than his fair share of time.
15. And would the FBI lie?
Dan ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.20.11)
How convenient. What a scoop! Nearly thirty years after the events when we thought we knew everything there was to know. (Sarcasm off) Do you seriously think all of the high-level sources which have recently called for commutation of Pollard's sentence would not have had access to this information, that is, if it had existed prior to this recent "revelation"? Somebody has a grudge and is afraid that the public calls for his release are about to bear fruit. They hope this last ditch effort will thwart it. Ramp up the pressure people. Even if it was true, Jonathan Pollard has paid the price of his crimeat least six times now. In reality, they wanted to give him a death sentence, which is in practical terms what they did. However, it was an illegal punishment for what he did, so in typical fashion, they found a way around that. Whose treachery is greater?
16. That SOB being brought up again?
Cameron ,   USA   (09.20.11)
17. Pollard
Arn ,   Yehud, Israel   (09.20.11)
A spin. Misinformation is one of the oldest tricks in the book. The US would not have had any reason not to expose this information very early in the case were it, in fact, a fact. Why now? To distance the Jews from Pollard. Were he beyond the grip of the American administration they risked being exposed as criminals far more cruel, deceitful and dangerous than Pollard ever was.
18. Pollard
Bruria   (09.20.11)
From day one this case always had a bad smell. I doubt this is the reason. What I would like to know is "Why" the sentence is so long? There is something the public is not being told. Maybe it is time we demanded the truth--whether we will like it or not.
19. Keep him locked up, he's just an greedy opportunist.
Talula ,   Israel   (09.20.11)
And, he thinks because he's a Jew, we will bail him out. He was paid for what he did. It's not our fault he's a useless spy and got caught.
20. He would have spied for the devil if the price was right...
Mark Wilson ,   U.S.A   (09.20.11)
Spare me all your crap about Jewish nationalism. The man is no more than a common criminal... Even common criminals have more honor and dignity than this poor excuse of a man... I was praying for the death penalty in his case...
21. Feeling the pressure.
ex-frummie ,   johannesburg, S.A.   (09.20.11)
The reason this is coming out now is that the obama administration is starting to feel the pressure since the shock election in NY recently in which the winning candidate, among other things, criticized Pollards length of sentence. If obama is worried about retaining the Jewish vote it would be catastrophic for him if Pollard dies in prison. And judging by his health that is becoming a strong possibility. The U.S. should also be worried about tit for tat treatment when one of their citizens gets caught spying by a friendly country. Not a good precedent to be setting by the world leader.
22. Definitely disporportionate...
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (09.20.11)
...unless there is something that is not being made public. And if that is the case, Israel and the American Jews are much better off not having it made public. And as for bringing him here: Be careful of what you wish for!
23. and if china had made a better offer, he had taken it (?)
eporue ,   europe   (09.20.11)
24. he would be a candidate to swear that arab-oath, or is it te
eporue ,   europe   (09.20.11)
rrorist oath, or lieberman oath...
25. And let us say he did approach Australia
Tahl   (09.20.11)
Not that this sounds too plausible. But even if he did. Does this justify locking him up for life, while similar offenders walked free after several years?
26. Enough is ENOUGH!
roy   (09.20.11)
27. Waker family of spies
Galutia ,   Selah   (09.20.11)
Waker family of spies done Far Far more harm than Pollard ever thought of doing...yet thru a plea bargin john walker got his sons sentence reduced ...his son was released around 2000 ...if anyone should be kept in prison it would be the whole walker family.... Pollards sentence was a direct result of a security establishment getting caught with thier pants down by the walker family's selling much of the major code machines and codes right under the noses of security. The security establishment wanted to make a example of pollard with a harsh sentence as a message to others out there that might be thinking of doing the same thing. essentualy Pollard is paying the price because of the walker family. pollard only deserved 2 -5 years
28. Foul
Gerry ,   Usa   (09.20.11)
Bunnie, leave america. You clearly don't belong here if you think it's just fine to sell our secrets. your naked hatred is an ugly thing No country had a right to our information, just agreements that can change.
29. Wow
Gerry ,   Usa   (09.20.11)
Ezra, there are about 10 things in your comment that are patently false and extremely offensive to Americans. Seems you are comfortable with betraying your nation and putting it's citizens at risk. We have no clue what pollard gave to the israelis. Real nice moral relativism you practice.
30. #2 you should be ashamed of saying that about a fellow jew.
hodayah ,   Israel   (09.20.11)
This is so so sad, we must be united, all the jews that suffer are our problem. "Got what he deserved" what kind of comment is that, hatred...yom hakippurim is coming don't forget to ask forgiveness for saying something like this. We should all pray for the inmediately release of Jonathan Pollard and Gilad Shalit.
