1. unfortunately, after 2000 years we still
Michael   (09.21.11)
don't get it. In the month of elul we still don't get it. Wake up! sinuch chinum is the issue. Rosh Hashana is right around the corner.
2. Watchdogs is a provocation?
Chanoch ,   Bet Shemesh   (09.21.11)
I live in a different area of Bet Shemesh far from the School but I'm not sure how having watchdogs to protect the school and the girls is a provocation.
3. For these haredim - sinat hinam is a mitzvah?
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (09.21.11)
I'm a Jew in Israel with kids in the mamlachti dati system and all my extended family working, learning, making parnasa and serving in the IDF (or retired having gotten old enough that they don't want some of us any more and it's in the hands younger guys and gals). These haredim remind us that despite showering them with our tax money, giving them years to study Torah and show us how they are strengthening the Jewish nation - there is still a big question mark over the justification for letting them take their parnasa from our tax money. They not only refuse to police their own hooligans, they seem to be proud of the fact that even a minority of those at this demonstration committed hilul Hashem by attacking innocent people. Why are the haredi leaders doing nothing about the haredi hooligans who harrass and threaten little Jewish schoolgirls? They tell us they live by the Torah, but in reality we see lots of Sodom and Gomorah in Ramat Beit Shemesh.
4. Not very clear
Devo K ,   Ariel, Israel   (09.21.11)
So which is it? Either 'hundreds of ultra-orthodox people and several Bet Shemesh Rabbis' attended this or the only ones to arrive were the 'extremists' and a bunch of kids. If the extremist number in the hundreds, then the community has a huge problem on their hands, the Rabbis need to rein this in and the police need to be getting way more involved than they have been.
5. Our tax money is feeding and creating this Taliban!
Jew1 ,   Ashdod   (09.21.11)
Now you understand why the issue of girl singing soldier is important? Because it is just a starting point. If we allow them of what they want, one day IDF will be standing and facing the similar issues like Beit Shemesh is facing today. I always pointed fingures on muslim religion but I forgot that while pointing one finger at them, I am pointing remaining four fingers at myself. These people are making me feel ashamed of myself.
6. Judaism or Religious Cult?
Menahem ,   Jerusalem   (09.21.11)
Some people believe that wearing a white shirt, a black suit and a black hat, makes them better Jews. Those people should sit and study Torah to learn what it means to be Jewish. Because attacking innocent children and female reporters is definitely NOT Jewish.
7. young haredim
Rahel   (09.21.11)
these young haredim act just like your average punk kid and vandal in other countries- and this is supposed to be the up and coming religious elite in Israel? No thank you.
8. Please note "only Haredim who arrived were extremists
Rebecca ,   Modiin   (09.21.11)
BH not all the Haredim support this. Those that do, well suffice to say I agree with the dog patrol for them.
9. Basically its a fight for territory
Israeli grandma   (09.21.11)
The Beit Shemesh mayor has been very weak in his handling of Haredi extremist minorities and this tolerance of disgusting behaviour by a few has several bad outcomes. In this particular case, instead of welcoming a religious girls school into the community, the extremists want the buildings for their own sect. The school is not government funded, and these extremists have no case. If the school windows look out on the neighbours this is irrelevant, and in any case the neighbours should have something better to do with their time than snooping on little girls at their lessons. That the parents of these girls have had to escort their children to and from school is a disgrace, and the Mayor should be ashamed of himself for letting things get so badly out of control. The police should also do their job and maintain law and order. If they were Arabs harassing the schoolchildren we would see it put a stop to very quickly!!!
10. Immodesty?
Wade ,   NYC USA   (09.21.11)
I take offense at the implication (or downright accusation) that the mamlachti dati school girls are in any way immodest. On the contrary, these girls never wear pants, but rather long skirts or dresses. Lubavich hasidim in Crown Heights Brooklyn share their neighborhood with immigrants from West Indies who walk the streets in very brief costumes in summer. In fact, during the West Indies "celebration" through Lubavichville, women parade half naked. The saintly Lubavich, I am sure, look the other way. In that vein, the Orot school is an ideal neighbor for the Haredim.
11. If they were Arabs...
Shosh ,   Jerusalem   (09.21.11)
Israeli grandma, you are very naive! Where do you live? If they were Arabs our police wouldn't even show up, and even if it did they policemen would arrest some Jewish "rioters|" and apologize before the Arabs for inconviniencing them.
12. I believe the Lord would like
Wisdom ,   UK   (09.21.11)
some of His sons to start behaving like real men. Women need educating to support children and family, not a lay about husband, but one who will be protector provider. While she is the vessel of wisdom and grace, put this with the 10 commandments, courage and humility, and you may begin to understand what a true Jew is about. There is no place for left right politics in Israel the Land of adonai elohim tzevaot who created sons and daughters for his pleasure and delight. Not religious stupidity......back to the bible on your knees and open your hearts be shem yeshua, who healed and defended many women. which was brave
13. Really Deluded
zichron   (09.22.11)
Some of these Haredim whilst many they live wholesome modest lives are deluded dangerously in world affairs . They refused to evacuate to siberia as the nazis approached there was time to save many .Its a tradgic pain for our people to see such hate between jew and jew who are observant.
14. If they aren't learning full time draft them
Mordechai   (09.22.11)
I don't believe their a a draft deferment policy for haredim to go protest girls schools. The IDF should come down and grab the protesters who have not served in the IDF and take them off to serve their time for the next 3 years.
15. !6th VS 2ist Centurys
Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot   (09.22.11)
These people have a 16th century mind set, it’s about time they join the rest of the world in this the 21st century! Modesty is not a fixed unchanging concept as these Haridi seem to think but, is a function of time and place. If these people do not want to live in the 21st century it is their choice, however, they must be thoroughly ignored. It about time the majority cease its financing of these antiquated culture.
16. What a sad development!
Jew1 ,   Ashdod   (09.22.11)
We are providing these taliban and nourishing them with our tax money and silence. Our political leaders are too afraid to take a breave step in channeling them on proper road of prosperity. This can be achieved if we stop their allowances at once and force them to join IDF. Then they must come out of their shell and get a job, Then only they will start understanding the real world and their own foolishness. There were so many protests in Israel on economy. Instead of taking above mentioned step, we are shooting in our own feet. We are cutting the defence budget. We are making hole in the umbrella that protects us. This is a very very sad development in the history of Israel.
17. desecrate- what?
Rachel   (12.14.11)
it is the extremist wh are doing the desecrating- these selfrighteous fanatics judge other people-. They behave like Neanderthals Why should anybody have respect for them?
