If anyone thought that Joe Biden represented the "friendlier" face of the current administration, apparently he is out to prove that he can be worse for Israel and American Jews than Obama. This is a broader question than the merits of Mr. Pollard's petition, many though there are. Those of us who are aware of the news and who happen to have the benefit of a functioning memory-- apparently contrary to Mr. Biden's expectations-- will recall that Mr. Biden very prominently, as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, signed a petition to President Bush calling for Mr. Pollard's release. Apparently he relies quite substantially in his relations with the Jewish community upon the expectation that most of us are fools-- or that most of us in the very least don't take offense at being lied to in front of our faces. If he had any respect for his audience, would he not have at least thought to conceive of some half-believable conversion of opinion-- other than to betray his dishonesty to anyone who could remember it? This is what happens when you continue to throw your support behind people who haven't earned it-- they increasingly disregard you, and eventually don't even bother to go through the trouble of coming up with excuses to explain why they're not lying. Recall, if you can remember it, how much Mr. Biden squirmed at the prospect that a director of the National Security Council then believed to be a pro-Israel stalwart (Condi Rice) might head the more "even-handed" ranks of the diplomatic corps. And yet-- either because of his unique position of public irrelevance, or because of his race or perhaps for some other reason-- his "pro-Israel" credentials haven't attracted an iota of scrutiny. The man thrives on the expectation that we are all idiots. Teach him otherwise.

In case nobody wanted to read my long post with "fools" in the title, I wanted to reiterate my main point. This man very prominently signed a petition calling for Pollard's release. He also, now that I remember, was personally involved in releasing those American Russian agents that were apprehended a year or two ago-- and was so unaggrieved by their treasonous actions that he broke all protocols of propriety and called one of them (a woman) "hot" on a late night comedy show.
