So Jewish philanthropic organizations, who ought to be worried about Jewish hunger and deprivation throughout the world -- elderly people living in Israel on fixed incomes, for example -- are instead trying to bring "Jewish values" to a community of one million souls in New York, the overwhelming majority of which are rabidly anti-Semitic? Makes PERFECT sense! Why didn't I think of that? For shame. Let us take care of our own; let everyone else worry about their own.
2. You do have it right

I believe you are taking your Jewishness a little to far, yours or your little war inside your head is not the only battle front, Sarah B. 2012 is coming if not for the thought, just be nice and help someone and it doesn't and might not be that Jew who needs the help or zadaka.
3. To: No. 2

Feel free to help whomever you want. I prefer to worry about -- and support financially -- Jews. Does that bother you? Too bad.
