1. Come on..
Paul in Jaffa ,   Jaffa, Israel   (10.09.11)
Read the Gideon Levy piece in Haaretz it will give you some perspective on your misguided belief you are chosen & special
2. why don't they win Nobel prizes?
(10.09.11)
Better question: Why should third-rate hacks nobody wants to read get the Nobel prize just because they are Israeli?
3. "Sick and decadent?"
Dovid ,   Los Angeles   (10.09.11)
I'm tired of reading this person's bizarre so-called defenses of Israel. This person is one of those who trumpets his phoney love for Israel and the Jewish people, but whose only love is for the Far Right, and who does not hesitate to plie his hatred and scorn upon most Jews who don't buy into his nasty world view. Including antisemitic slurs.
4. Finally the truth on Israeli writers
Dani Klug   (10.09.11)
5. why dont you bozo win a nobel prize... err..or any prize...
eporue ,   europe   (10.09.11)
6. why israeli "leftist"-authors dont get the nobel prize....
eporue ,   europe   (10.09.11)
why dont YOU religious zealots get the literature nobel prize ?... why dont you even make it to the bestseller lists with your drivel ?... grossmann, oz and the other mentioned have realistic chances to get the nobel prize one day... the zealots have zero chance, not in a thousand years...
7. to OZ & co
jew from the east   (10.09.11)
the naivity of intellectuals is perfectly described by Ervin Sinko in "Novel of a novel".it would be a good lecture for Grossman,Oz and Kaniuk.
8. To 'Dovid'
m   (10.09.11)
The journalist's 'hatred and scorn' is only against traitors. This is because he is a normal human being with ethics, who can differentiate between good and evil, not right and left.
9. Israel’s literary tragedy
Yonatan ,   Yerusalem   (10.09.11)
Op-ed: Why do most of Israel’s prominent writers go easy on Jewish State’s enemies? what a dumb question, the same as why do most countries hate Israel? ECONOMICS muslim market happens to be a little larger than the jewish market
10. They will be remembered for their folly …
Mladen Andrijasevic ,   Be'er Sheva ,Israel   (10.09.11)
Amos Oz , A.B. Yehoshua and David Grossman will like Jean-Paul Sartre be remembered by many much more for their misplaced support of the jihadists and Mao Tse Tung than for their literary and philosophical works. A pity, since A.B. Yehoshua’s Mr Mani is a masterpiece.
11. I don t think ,that the Nobel price..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (10.09.11)
is the only reference of a good book. "To the end of the land" from David Grossman,is an outstanding book, with or without Nobelprice.
12. What a bunch of yahoos!!!
Ayeush ,   Gibraltar   (10.09.11)
I cannot for the life of my literary taste, whatever the value of it, to serve Mr Oz with the Title of Literarature Laureate: first he has no integrety in his conception what literature is all about (See Faulkner's introduction to his books), nor there is any Moral Equivalency in the core of his writing. With the Hesed Sfarady I am now convince of A.B. Yehushua to be added to the Pantheon of the Laureates- though I still have a great appreciation for the Lebanese writer in French language Amin Maalouf who deserves to be part of that Institution-. By the way, please add the Nobel Prize for literature the names of some Sephardic writers: Harold Pinter, Elias Canetti, and yes, Nadine Gordimer.
13. Thank you Giulio Meotti for another
Israeli 2   (10.09.11)
interesting article. That could indeed be one of the reasons. You are too soft on them. It is a character thing. A mental and backbone problem associated most often with the Hollywood crowd. What do you call that? Leftwing stupidity?
14. Yes, Giulio, sadly, everything you say is true.
Hanoch   (10.09.11)
It seems that, as far as Israeli society is concerned, it is a simple man on the street that sees the truth in it's unadorned form. The Israeli literati, on the other hand, are hopelessly lost and confused. In a rarefied bubble they live in the world appears as if in distorted mirror. They should get no state support. Let these self-important artistes continue their self-delusion. No serious person is going to waste his/her time and money on their high minded nonsense.
15. I never read an Israeli writer...
Salomon ,   Sao Carlos / SP   (10.09.11)
And I probably won’t read... Their political anti-Israel speech, is out of any logic, it makes me sick... No stimulus to buy one of their books... By the way, a watched a declaration by Oz saying he does not feel any link to the land [of Israel], what matters for him is the language, the Hebrew... So I believe he could move to Germany and continue writing, the result would be the same...
16. Why hasnt any Israeli author won the Nobel prize ?
shadoil ,   Jerusalem   (10.09.11)
Because what they write IS NOT literature. It is pure CRAP!
17. Writers as political thinkers
Seymour in Berkeley ,   Berkeley USA   (10.09.11)
Israeli writers are no more adept at political thinking than Ploni ben Ploni--the average Joe Shmo. Their status however gives me media access where they can make fools of themselves.
18. moral corruption of the artistic/creative elites
dante ,   uk   (10.09.11)
it is a pathological aspect of Israeli society that it has produced an artistic/creative elite that is so alienated from its people, its society, its government that is often sympathetic to Israel's enemies. it is disgusting and would be tolerated in no other country. can one imagine brits or Americans supporting their mortal enemies? (there were, of course, a few that did during WWII; they were almost always shunned, sometimes gaoled.) these artists, most of them second-raters, at best, should be anathematised. let them show their utter corruption by peddling their cheap hostility to Israel to the europeans; there's always a market there for that garbage; talent is definitely not a requirement.
19. # 1 and # 3
Paul Iardin   (10.09.11)
It's amazing that you don't see reality about these writers, strong with the weak and weak with the strong
20. Ahmm, it's called Stockholm Syndrome-Oslo was a different
tom ,   tel aviv   (10.09.11)
tragedy. As to ''why'', the the fact is, that self-declared, self-percieved intellectuals always choose the high moral ground, that has no connection to the real life. We are ugly and hating and we try to cover it up with nice paintings and chamber music. In Israels case the actions of people like Amos Oz, with his considerable international clout are almost criminal but we are a free society, so he is free to soil his own nest as he sees it fit. All we can and should do is to stop buiyng his merchandise.
21. good for them as they dont buy the BS from Liberman
Haim ,   TA   (10.09.11)
With Liberman acting as sensor, its hardly surprising, these authours have the intelligence to see through the BS of the right wing and have the courage to stand up against the likes of Liberman and his little black book. Soon the world will know the truth.
22. Gettng to the root of the tooth ache........
Hippocrates ,   earth   (10.09.11)
and it hurts. But its true. Get some balls Jews and love who you are. Be rightoeous, feed the needy, love justice, love fairness, love peace but love your survival and common sense and your good neighbor, and the Creator of all things the most!
23. Meotti
bg ,   jerusalem   (10.09.11)
The editorial is really sad to read; largely because it is true.
24. A Deserving Israeli Author
Daniel ,   St. Paul, MN   (10.09.11)
Israel has an author who is both a magnificent writer, and someone who is proud of his country. He has already won Israel's Sapir Prize for Literature, and if he wasn't a resident of the West Bank (he teaches and lives in Maale Adumim), he would be awarded the Nobel. His name is Haim Sabato.
25. #8 m
solomon ,   bklyn   (10.09.11)
Thank you for making a differentiation between 'good and evil' and 'right and left'. They are not always the same comparisons.
26. What rubbish !!!
Stan ,   Israel   (10.09.11)
10 Israelis have won a Nobel Prize 3 of them for Peace which is not really relevant. So one out of seven which is about 14.3% . If all the Nobel Prizes won by Jews were counted I think that we would find about the same percentage for litrature in world Jewry as in Israel
27. No nation can survive a self hating" elite"
NewEliteNeeded ,   Jerusalem Israel   (10.09.11)
No nation can surviive when its entire literary "elite" is self hating at some point it will poison the entire nation and bring about its total collapse. Where are the lovers of Israel among todays writers ?
28. To # 21, (Haim), Lieberman right wing?
Salomon ,   Sao Carlos / SP   (10.09.11)
You are are, by all political standards Lieberman should be viewed as left wing: 1. He is anti-clerical, or against the religious sects. 2. He is for civil marriage 3. He is for nonHalachic conversion. 4. He defends giving up Arab Jerusalem 5. He defend swap of land...together with the inhabitants.. 5. He is not for Greater Israel How can you call him right wing?
29. Fear mongering article. Acedemics are part of a conspiracy?
Josh   (10.10.11)
This article goes a long way towards labeling the best and the brightest as idiots with mental problems. Who can argue with that? The fact that they would say the reason they are not getting prizes is because of this tendency of not support right-wing religious institutions and the overriding Israeli superiority dogma, says one thing. The prise is rigged. Prizes should not be based on pro or anti Palestinian state/war reasons. We saw Obama win one for things he never did, so who would be deciding on these prizes and using them as political tools? Let me guess, The same ones who blacklist academics as suicidal? Its just a guess, I really have no idea. You don't fool us, you know. Rigged. So academics, if you want a prize, better tow the line? That's what I hear in this article.
30. BTW - I don't agree with the academic stance, but...
Josh   (10.10.11)
...maybe I am out of the loop of the information they share.
