1. public healthcare
Mike ,   us, midwest   (10.10.11)
this is precisely why there is a shortage of doctors, they are overworked and underpaid, after slaving away at med school and racking up huge debts, this is their reward, end public healthcare, and make it cheaper to become a doctor, increase the supply of doctors, and there won't be issues
2. These guys are not slaves!!!!
Eduardo Weisz ,   São Paulo, Brazil   (10.10.11)
If I understood correctly the situation it is not about a strike anymore, it is about quiting an unfitting job environment. Contrary to the teachears of once, these doctors are not fighting for better conditions, they are, for good or bad, refusing to take part on the israeli medical system. If the system cannot survive without them, it should have taken an actitude before. When doctors quit, they are not working for the public health system anymore. They are not responsable for the lives of the people that depends of this system. It is just a job, like any other. They do have the right to quit . If their service is essencial as you say. And if people should die if they quit as you also say. It is the health system responsability to ensure the situation should not deteriorate to this point. Workers are not slaves, the state should treat them well if wants to depend on them!
3. To n° 2
Marcela Araújo ,   Brazil   (10.10.11)
I think the doctors are right for the simple reason that it is better to correct the faults before the system collapses. It seems that the Israeli health system has not yet entered into collapsing It really does not like the Brazilian health system has collapsed. It is best to keep the conversation...
4. anarchy
colin   (10.10.11)
Exactly the underhand reporting by the press. WHat IS A BIG NO-NO ??? At least somebody now listens. The docters are now at the end of thier patience Hope they stay away. There are many jobs for qualified man anywhere in the world. Who needs the Israel finance minister intefering in the docters lives.??He like all politicians does not care an iota for the public.
5. Poor reporting on the strike
Shalom Freedman ,   Jerusalem Israel   (10.11.11)
This article does tell us that the Residents are not happy with their conditions of work, and with having to sign a contract for nine years. It does not however outline in detail their demands, and why the Treasury and the Government are so resistant of meeting them. All we ever read about it is 'the latest statement that the Residents are threatening to intensify their strike. By the way a starting resident's salary ranges from 17 to 26 thousand shekels ( before taxes)depending where in the country they practice. This does not seem to me starvation wage but perhaps considering the long hours they work it is unfair.. But I again do not know the full details of the strike and the demands of the Residents. I would add however that I find it deplorable that physicians whose first role is in healing should allow a condition to develop where patients are suffering because of Residents' refusal to work. How can any demand transcend the imperative to care for those who are ill?
6. Different point of view
Moshe ,   Netanya   (10.11.11)
The doctors are overpaid. They sit a few hours in the public office, and then go to private practice, or even take their private patients on public time. Since 1980s the quality of student in US vent down. Only the worst student go to Med schools, and a lot of olaces are for very bad students. The doctors in US and Israel are much worse than, say, in Russia or Ukrain. Only med technology is much better. On BBC, they said that in Kiev a doctor makes $100 a month (hundred). They try to go to North Africa (Libya) to get little more.
7. For how long
Shalom ,   Ashdod, IL   (10.11.11)
Our author here did not tell us "how long should the doctors wait before acting? Nobody was responding to them even when they resigned. After two months, the answer they got was "wait a couple of more days". This is pathetic and the writer is more than pathetic
8. #2 They are free to leave
BENJABO ,   ISRAEL   (10.11.11)
America is looking to alleviate its serious shortage of Doctors
9. #4 Colin - is that you ?
(10.12.11)
U.S. Healthcare is controlled by the Government, same as it is England & Canada, their respective Governments set the rates of remuneration that the doctors are allowed to receive The same holds true for most European countries, the Scandanavian in particular I don't know what your line of work and could care less; however, I would expect that you would want to receive the maximum wage for whatever you do
10. Healthcare
Tom ,   New York , USA   (10.12.11)
In the US a doctor's reimbursement is determined by insurance companies which is why medicine has become an assembly line ; the exception is cosmetics which is reimbursed at what the free market allows.
