Just like in Egypt this didn't start off about a desire for democracy it was all about a young population and shortage of jobs. If Assad had started a jobs program, created artificial jobs for the short term he would have been a hero and the people would have loved their caring president. If they wanted political reforms all he needed to do was set up a phoney commission to investigate what political reforms can be made. Assad would announce this committee would investigate for a year and he would then impliment the proposed reforms. The people are happy because they think reforms are coming, the momentum is lost and this committee never reports back but Assad is safe. Instead despite of the fact he has had a western education and he has seen his fellow dictators fall because they were unwilling to make reforms the idiot still chose kill rather than buying off the people.
