1. More Information Required!
Nachum Ben Daniel ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (10.19.11)
Your article is great, but where do I sign to follow Mr Kaniuk's footsteps...?
2. Yoram Kaniuk and Gilad Atzmon
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (10.19.11)
Maybe they should start a support group for ex-Jews. Invite Casper Weinberger.
3. Nachum, why would you want to live in Israel?
m   (10.19.11)
You don't consider yourself a Jew, Jewish roots, don't mean anything to you, so why would a man like yourself and the Kaniuk guy want to live there? What keeps you there? What binds you there?
4. #3
Michael ,   Haifa   (10.19.11)
I live proudly in Israel, because I am an Israeli. I do not need a religion in order to be an Israeli
5. Choose life is not in a Religion
Josh   (10.20.11)
All religions want to steer the boat away from the dock. When Israelis stop persecuting "non natives' and base judgments on true Torah from the lips of G-d to Moses, we will see a great change in Israel. Till then we remain choosing anything and everything that brings war and division. Choose a curse this year or not?
6. #3 What you're saying is?
Josh   (10.20.11)
Because a religious person has a belief and follows a spiritual leader (for the good or the bad) he is more entitled to come and reside? Does that mean those for Jesus, a Dead Moshiac, or Mohamed are more entitled than a secular? According to Torah, the only ones entitled to remain long in the land are those who accept the entire Torah that was "given this day" and "in this book" which is one that allows no additions and subtractions. The Hebrews led out of Egypt had no Torah and no Religion. G-d made it clear through Moses that the people should not say it was because of their own righteousness that the inhabitants of the land were driven out and the land given to our nation. You now say because of your "righteous" religious beliefs, others should be driven out? What are you really saying? I hope you are not saying you are better and more entitled because you follow today's religious leaders. Moses would likely disagree that todays Jewish follower is better than a non follower of all those many books of man and politicians. Do not the organized crime figures throw on a kippah and be religious?

8. without Religion
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (10.20.11)
Nature doesn't tolerate a vacuum, which means that people with no religion are exposed to all kinds of crazy sects, hindu, buddhist christian, muslim, and Jewish taliban,Judaism is so rich,if seperated from dogma,no need to look for greener pastures.
9. Congratulations to Mr. Yoram Kaniuk.
Michael ,   California, USA   (10.20.11)
I always wanted it for myself but had neither the means nor persistence to fight the battle. Definitely, I am in the camp with Mr. Kaniuk and congratulate him on this important victory. Judaism is defined to me as culture, it has very little to do with religion. Mr. Kaniuk's daughters and grandchildren are Jews if they identify with Jewish history and culture. The majority of Jews (identified by their culture) in Israel need to continue the battle and bring to a full separation of religion and State. It will happen, it has to happen.
10. #3 -- This is why
Michael ,   California, USA   (10.20.11)
In this overcrowded and tightly protected world, people live where they can and where they have reasonable existence assured. This is why Nachum and YOU live in Israel and neither one of you can tell the other where else to live. Arguments like "if you don't like it, go somewhere else" are nonsense. Where people live it is theirs and they have the right to it as citizens, irrespective of their religion or political views.
11. Jew
NEFEN ,   Rehovot - Israel   (10.20.11)
I was for 5 long years in concentration camps only because in my identity papers I was listed as a Jew. Nobody asked me then if I consider myself a Jew or if I have or not "Jewish roots" . Upon his return, one could see on Gilad Shalit's face what it means to be kept years in solitary confinement. The survivors of the concentration camps suffered not less. I survived and managed to rebuild my life and when the opportunity arrived I emigrated to my country. I never dreamed that presently they are people in this country who are not satisfied that I am a survivor of the concentration camps and was recognized to be a Jew based on the the Law of Return, but they will consider me a Jew only if I follow their orthodox doctrine, namely : do not work ,instead study all my life long the holy books in order to be prepared for resurrection on the day when Messiah will come and perform all the prescribed "mitzvot". No wonder that some people prefer not to be anymore named Jews.

lea ,   Gerona Spain   (10.20.11)
The religious have made a pest of God.It would be a relief to be free of Him. Kol hakavod to Yoram Kaniuk.
13. Kaniuk is a crazy self hater & Gidon Levy-wannabee
Tomer ,   herzeliyah   (10.20.11)
These idiots have done lots of damage to our nation with their Oslo and Itnatkut surrender policies.
14. Kaniuk
Lou ,   Rishon le-Zion   (10.20.11)
Really, who cares what religion Kaniuk is. Maybe, he should leave Israel with his whole family and move somewhere else. If he is so ashamed of being known as a Jew, then he is a "NOBODY". Anyway, we have enough Jew-haters in this country, and adding one more, really makes no difference.
15. #10 Michael but they are driving out Americans
Josh   (10.22.11)
In Israel some groups have the right and the ability to deny a "reasonable existence" and the police, the people and the government will do nothing to prevent a constructive eviction, denial of work, attack or worse. Ynet has not been allowing any posts with the word פרוטקציה in english.
16. Our choice : 100 % Jews
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.23.11)
Secular or religious , but not fake ones . No need for self proclaimed "converts" or Jews for j...s .
17. Proud to be listed as a Jew in Israel !
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.23.11)
70-80 years ago it was an "excommunication" from the society when you had this J on your ID card . Now we can be PROUD to have it on our Israeli ID , And this even as a SECULAR Jew . Don't reject our great History , the Kotel is more than "some stones" . it's part of the Jewish people .
18. Foolish People
Ezra ,   San Diego USA   (12.21.12)
There are no Jews without Hashem. Everyone knows this, few admit it. Yoram Kaniuk wants to join that group making a political statement. Liberalism has become his gentile religion. Good luck with that.
