31. can I live in Ramallah, Bet Jallah, Schem?
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (10.31.11)
Come on, lets be even handed. In what Arab city can a Jew rent an apartment with out being lynched? How about equal reporting??
32. #11 - yes, they do.
Eldar ,   Haifa   (10.31.11)
Next to Haifa, in the primarily Druze town of Usfiya, dozens of Jewish students rent rooms and apartments from Druze owners. So, your rhetorical question is moot.
33. Druze students
ex Golani 1973   (10.31.11)
Hey you religious fools, have you as jews learnt nothing from our jewish history and religious law? How dare you treat anybody this way. As a jew I thought we held the MORAL HIGH GROUND, so stop being racist idiots and accept our fellow human beings as g-ds children just as we are. Oh and one more thing, I remember an old Golan Druze riding past on his donkey as I and my comrades in Gdud 17 were setting off to retake Mt Hermon, the old druze man not only throw fresh fruit to us to eat but wished us luck and was telling us to take care. Never met a bad Druze then nor since. Served with Druze in Golani and worked along with them on many occassions. Druze are my brothers in arms and I will always treat them as friends and family. Hey religious fools I didn't see your holy white arse at my side in battle on Mt Hermon but I did see many a good DRUZE TROOPER by my side.
34. nothing to do with race.
Golan ,   modiin   (10.31.11)
My girlfriend was vacated from a Haredi neighborhood (she is Haredi) because she was (hashem ishmor!) a divorcee and they did not want "that kind" in their city. So please... its Haredim not racism
35. Yes the Druze do serve in the I.D.F.
jason white ,   afula, israel   (10.31.11)
But not the Druze of the Golan. They kept their syrian citizenship. I served with Druze from Abu Snin, Daliat and Ussifyah. But the Druze of the Golan never. Since almost all do not have Israeli citizenship, then they should not attend schools of higher education here. Let them go to syria. As for the hara-dim neighbors, if they did not serve in the I.D.F., let them also go to syria.I am sure they will get a warm welcome there.
36. To #21 Mike in Phoenix
John ,   Alaska   (10.31.11)
You are correct in my case; I am very sad that this happened specifically to Druze. I would say the same about the gentle Baha'i. I might say the same about bedouins but nobody will give me a straight answer of whether they are on Israel's side. I would _NOT_ say the same for those Israeli Arabs who throw rocks at Jews, who refuse to rent to Jews, who respond with violence when Jews come into their towns or neighborhoods. I could go on (and on). I decry racism. I also decry your equating the Druze with those among the Israeli Arabs whose racism makes this article seem tame. If you think you can, then please kindly explain Hevron, 1929.
37. To #29 and #30 Rami
John ,   Alaska   (10.31.11)
This was a shameful incident, and I know it made your already hard feelings toward Israel worse. All I can say is that I am sad both for these boys and for you. I think I remember you saying you are a Christian. If you are saved, you know to forgive them, and you know that Biblically you must stand by them. The Jews are more your family than those Arab Israelis who are Muslims. When Jesus Christ returns, He will give you and the Jews a shared reward that the Muslims in their hate and evil have denied themselves. I know this does not make hard feelings better, but please pray on this and I know that God will help you find healing and warmth. (please note: I believe I remember you saying you are saved. If you are not a Christian, then of course please disregard what I am sure sounds quite foolish to you)
38. # 30
Birdi ,   Israel   (10.31.11)
Rami have you ever visited the(Arab) town of Taibe? Have you seen the beautiful villas the Arabs of Taibe live in? The streets of Taibe are very clean, there is electricity, the municipality collects the garbage. Everything works well in Taibe, but no Jews live there because they are not welcome.
39. How many such incidents have there been in the past?
tom ,   tel aviv   (10.31.11)
I hope very few and as in any normal, not very homogenous society we can expect this to happen. It is no big deal and the offended Druze are very wise in not having made a big "schtink" out of it! Anyway, the so called authorities wouldn't made much effort. All the sanctimonious postings are very welcomed but hey, my fellow citizens cool it! We're no saints, but far from monsters. It still annoys one to hear of such poor behaviour but hey: it's the pious purveyors of pure idiocy (the "religious") what do you expect???!
40. Haim - Israel is not racist
Margie in Tel Aviv ,   Israel   (10.31.11)
Yes some people in Israel are racist. However, look at all the objections to the actions of the morally crippled haredim. Don't add to the hatred, dont be part of the problem, be part of the solution.
41. C'mon, it's just one isolated case. The norm is the opposite
Noodles ,   Coney Island   (10.31.11)
42. Re #33 Trust a soldier to tell it like it is!
John ,   Alaska   (10.31.11)
Thank you for your words, and be safe.
43. #29,30 Rami, unfortunately you are right :(
Yossef   (10.31.11)
44. # 36
Birdi ,   Israel   (10.31.11)
John, The Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs website explains in detail "The Bedouin in Israel.''
45. #35, The Druzes from the Golan are careful
Yossef   (10.31.11)
I cannot blame them, they don't know what will be their future: be syrian or israeli?
46. # 45
Birdi ,   Israel   (10.31.11)
The Golan stays in Israeli hands so the Druze best make up their minds soon.
47. Sarah B and Ali
mba ,   Israel   (10.31.11)
The Druze are loyal and faithful Israeli citizens and have been since the founding of the state. I have worked and served with many of them for many years. Evidently Sarah is ignorant in this matter and Ali is probably prejudiced (if he is Muslim or Christian). True, they are fierce and independent but no one should question their loyalty (I wonder how many Haridem in Safed serve in the army). Safed is not a village or even Jaffe, it is a university town whch accepts students from all of Israel and even some foreign stucents and they must have a place to live. Stop with the extreme racism, nationalism, paranoia, and stupidity.
48. I agree but..
Leo   (10.31.11)
Druze in the north do not serve in the army as far as i'm concerned.
49. #41 Noodles
Devorah   (10.31.11)
Bless your heart, Noodles, I always enjoy reading your posts, but I have to disagree with you this time. Yes, it is just one isolated case (that we know of), but this case is like an ignition switch. If it is not cut off now, then the Haredim become even more emboldened, and this treatment of the Druze can get real ugly real fast. Come on, Noodles, let's have a group hug.
50. 40 - Maggie, what Israel do you live in?
Gregg ,   Haifa, IL   (10.31.11)
Haim is right. Being part of the solution means looking at the truth straight in the eyes and not deny it. Israel IS a racist country. Israel practices segragation between its population, classifying them according their ethnic origins and religion, gives citizenship according to religion affiliation (for immigrants). No one in Israel is considered first and foremost by the fact that he's Israeli. Racism is everywhere in Israel. Even between Arabs (Muslims and Christians) there is racism.
51. They can stay at my house
Lucca di Mantovani ,   Tel Aviv   (10.31.11)
Druzim are good people. In addition to that the guy in the picture is so cute...
52. @49 Devorah, you better believe I'm hugging you, sweetheart
Noodles ,   Coney Island   (10.31.11)
53. and do you think this is OK?
(10.31.11)
54. As a Haradi (whatever)
Racheal ,   Rehovot   (10.31.11)
You know, I feel insulted everytime I hear the term haredi these days. When you describe a person by his/her skin color, origin, religion, politics... (well, maybe not politics :)) etc., you automatically and subliminally ascribe guilt and/or support of the action by that entire sector. Then you get people here saying how awful all us haredim are, cuz of course, we all think and act the same. What these people did is wrong. What this headline reads is wrong. Both are acts of racism. The only difference is one was prompted by hatred and fear, the other promotes it.
55. Arabs?
Who?   (10.31.11)
"Ultra-orthodox" are not Arabs, they are Jews (or claim to be). I assume the students were threatened not to file a claim, otherwise... They have a lease, they have every right to stay in the place. Where is the Civil Rights Movement? And why is it relevant that the Druze "serve"? You cannot be a racist towards those who serve in the army, but you can towards those who don't? Well, I've got news for you, Sarah, you are not less of a racist than the landlord.
56. peki'in
Mike ,   nyc   (10.31.11)
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3478336,00.html perhaps we should learn about druze tolerance...like kicking Jews out of peki'in a historically Jewish village.
57. In true democracy, this should be Illigal
Rami of Nazareth ,   Israel   (10.31.11)
I'd like to see jewish Kenesset memmbers who keep reminding us that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East stand up and pass a law making this illigal.
58. Good faith!
Ros ,   Tel Aviv   (10.31.11)
The landlord signed a contract and I am sure took money from the students. Therefore, he is required to give them notice and to pay them compensation AND IF HE IS NOT PREPARED TO DO THIS, they are entitled to stay UNTIL THE END OF THE PERIOD OF THE CONTRACT.
59. Relevance?
Ruth ,   Ramat Efal, Israel   (10.31.11)
What on earth does that have to do with renting flats to students in Safed. Israel is supposed to be a democracy with equal rights for all. I feel embarrassed and shamed when I read such an article.
60. druze in pikiin
Tzvi ,   Maalot, Israel   (10.31.11)
It was the Drize in Pikiin three years ago who decided they didn't want Jews buying homes in their village and started a pogrom where they burnt down Jewish houses and chased the Jews out. Pikiin has had continuous Jewish presence since the 2nd temple era. They might serve in the army, but they are certainly not one of us.
