2. Actually, salary *is* a key factor but ...

The Education Ministry claims the key is not the salary but rather the research facilities. Yes, it's true that in many scientific and research fields they can't be fully productive or competitive if they don't have access to world-class facilities. But salaries *are* also a factor, but the Ministry is shackled by socialist era salary guidelines that means even the best are paid like the mediocre as long as they're both "professors". What the university can provide is flexibility in terms of employment, sabbaticals etc. And it's often the role of university support organizations (the "Friends of" groups like ATS) to fund those facilities like those utilized by Israel's Chemistry Nobel winners.

I really doubt that Israelis make up a quarter of foreign academic staff in the US. Where on earth does this data come from?

My wife and I are living in poverty here in the USA and I have a PhD in Genetics, a masters in Pharmacology and a Bachelors in Biology. We are an observant Jewish couple living without Heath insurance, on government assistance for food and trying to avoid homelessness. Maybe Israel should bring some new Jews who are not so ungrateful to fill the positions left by the Israelis who left to come here. I mean come on. I just want a full-time salary, health coverage, and a decent place to eventually raise a family!
