Dagan was a good mossad leader no question about it. His referring to the saudi peace plan which stinks and has no teeth to it is surprising. his association with livni is 3 steps down and relates to him an incompetent like olmert who has no conviction for israeli positions and who is gutless to the core worried about her son being able to drink expressos in fancy diners in tel aviv while she hangs onto her advertising husband and asks what should I say. Bibi is not the best but compared to livni, labour, meretz and shas, he is light years better. So he needs his group of 8 to make decisoins. So what-he admits he is uncertain so yaalon, leiberman and begin can make the decisions for him. You already no barak will say don't do it, merridor would second the motion, and yishai has to convene the religiious authorities to get his marching orders

celine woland   (11.02.11)
leave gilad alone. he is at home and you cannot reverse things.
LAWRENCE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (11.02.11)
Right on the button with an uncomfortable truth .That poor Gilad Shalit suffered but he aint no hero.
4. Shalit was a victim
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (11.02.11)
Mr Dagan has made fair comment when he denied that Gilad Shalit was a hero...there is no evidence for it.He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nevertheless,Shalit was an innocent victim who was placed in a dangerous position by the State and so the State has a responsibility towards him. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
5. Gilad IS a hero! Giving strength to SHALIT=BIG SECURE ISRAEL
Jerry ,   The Netherlands   (11.02.11)
6. really ?
fad egypt   (11.02.11)
omar sulieman will be egypt next ruler ?? i hope so , but infortunately i dont think so , because he has no popularity among the egyptians , and till now he didnt annouce his plans to run for president i hope that Mr Dagan is correct but i dont think so !!! shalom
7. Suleiman the next Egypt leader?
Li ,   USA   (11.02.11)
Did Dagan resign due to late stage syphilis? He is saying the military will directly insert Suleiman? He would not last a few weeks. A person has to wonder what scenario would let Suleiman rule, and why Dagan thinks that scenario will happen.
LAWRENCE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (11.02.11)
Shalit fell captive ,as far as we know ,in an unheroic manner .However ,he survived in a heroic way which means that Meir Dagan is only semi correct .Gilad Shalit is a hero and also he is not.
Don ,   AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALA   (11.02.11)
This old Mossad man failed in his duty to find SHALIT before they did that deal to release all those Palisitinians. You have to wonder if Mossad is as good as it is made out to be
10. So where was Dagan's voice *before* the deal went through?
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (11.02.11)
Dagan's voice and opinion still carries weight in certain circles. Why only now, after the fact, does he expresses his opposition? Did he, like Livni, choose not to oppose it out of deference to the Shalit family, intending only after Shalit was home to express his concerns? By then it's too late. As with Livni, this current pose strikes me as opportunistic.

12. anyone that is held for over 5 years in Gaza in captivity...
andy ,   england   (11.03.11)
..and is able to smile in dignity on the day of his release IS ONE HELL OF A HERO to me. Welcome home Gilad. You were worth any number of those disgusting rats.
13. Putz speaks after the fact, and after shalit is freed,
Hippocrates ,   Earth   (11.03.11)
not B4, and Irans nukes are just "silly" and his endorsement of doing nothing. taking cheap shots at the center-right. this guy is jockeying with ashkenasi for labor or kadima and the left. spend your time waxing your head and not your country.
14. Of course he's a hero, and Dagan is a jackass
Brian Cohen ,   Judean Peoples Front   (11.03.11)
Any soldier who is captured in bbattle and survives 5 years in solitary confinement is a hero. Dagan is an example of the system gone bad. As head of the Mossad, his job is to kill the enemy and to not screw things up. Dagan is quick to forget that a Mossad screwup resulted in Sheikh Yassin being released - due to Mossad pressure of not willing to let Mossad agents rot in a foreign jail (or be executed as the spies that they were). What a two-faced jackass. Maybe Dagan should tell Mossad agents that he's opposed to getting them released should they fall into enemy hands like the Mossad agents in Jordan.
15. opportunist & leftist= dagan

18. T-O-A-S-T
Mea   (11.03.11)
Big surprise, another Israelis top gun retired and makes himself look like a nimrod. This is the Israel version of every US politician who does the same thing only instead of a 180 turn, they just get caught being a perv. Oh well, adios, Mr. Dagan, your credibility is t-o-a-s-t.
19. Shalt
T Andrews ,   Canada   (11.03.11)
If he survived his confinement he is a hero to me.
20. Shalit was an unfortunate pawn, not a hero.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (11.03.11)
21. Dagan: A Very Unsophisticated, Crass Individual
PERIS ORG ,   United States   (11.03.11)
He's retired; perhaps he should just go enjoy his retirement rather than spewing such absurd statements like: "Shalit is not a hero." Yeah...its statements like that which will make the entire nation fell like garbage: its also rude, crass, insensitive and stupid. Just goes to show how much these 'Jews' care about their fellow. With fellow Jews like Dagan around, I'm scared for all of us Jews! What monstrous behavior. He would do well by Israel and the Jews to shut is fat mouth and go play some poker or lay on a beach somewhere obscure.
22. Dagan is completely right about the Shalit deal.
Beauchard   (11.03.11)
Look, the released murderers have said they want to kill again. They have crowed about it. However, at the present time we do not know who the new victims will be. They are faceless. Let's give them a face. What if they kill somebody in your family (not somebody elses), is it still a good swap?
23. Meir Dagan - best Mossad chief EVER, however....
Talula ,   Israel   (11.03.11)
No-one sees Gilad as a hero. I think we all see him as a fresh-faced skinny little kid who was doing his mandatory army duty - who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The boy has been to hell and back, let's not forget that. Also, Bibi was there to shake his hand to show that he's the daddy - he's the one who got him back home - it was also, I believe, a diversion from the thousands and thousands of people rallying for social justice, Bibi had to throw us a bone. Reminds me of the movie - Wag the Dog.
24. I agree with EVERYTHING Dagan says in this article.Hoping 4 Suleiman!
Alan ,   SA   (11.03.11)
25. Do not blame Gilad if Israeli's are stupid
Zev ,   Israel   (11.03.11)
have no self respect and are no longer willing to fight.
Rafi ,   US   (11.03.11)
thank goodness someone has the backbone to speak the truth - and to stand up to the recent gross media & political pandering. Bravo Dagan - it's clear why your analysis has been well-respected & valued for years by numerous govts.
27. #14 - wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong!!!
28. Dagan=No Leadership
Meir ,   Toronto   (11.03.11)
A person who served at such a senior level ought to know what to say and not say. Diminishing/denegrating Shalit is really not necessary or appropriate. Dagan should know better and redisciver his 'filter'.
29. Shalit
Misha ,   Saint Paul, Mn   (11.07.11)
Dagan is a putz and an idiot
