1. Hilarious...you cant satisfy these radicals anytime soon
Al   (11.04.11)
Interesting when Israeli models (women) are shown scantily clad in suggestive poses (Tel Aviv and the rest of the country) you dont a whine form these radicals. However when women are not shown in ads especially in religious Jerusalem they riase a stink. How do you spell BS? B S
2. Great article, Chana!

3. I listened to a lecture today in a series of lectures called
Rivkah   (11.04.11)
"Registered Above" from WRM which said the soil in Israel is radioactive and by 2020, the males there will be sterile. Israelis must chelate out radioactive isotopes as a lifestyle. The poor can do this simply by adding cilantro and grated lemon rinds to their salads but should also take a vitamin/mineral supplement.
4. Non religious also object strongly

to blatant use of demeaning & sexualised images of women in advertising. 100% hiloni Tel Avivians find the low standards and vulgarity so common in Israeli advertising campaigns offensive, and have been saying so in public. The problem in Jerusalem and other areas of the country is that a small extreme group is forcing all female images, however respectable and "modest" out of the public sphere. This is just plain crazy, and to justify it by saying that billboards and bus stops will be trashed by the extremists who dont like the female face to appear is avoiding the issue. Vandals and public nuisances who trash public signs and installations should be punished for defacing public property. Nothing holy about this behaviour - it just the same as the recent trashing of a Jerusalem bookshop because of the objections of a few extremist bullies to the (unobjectionable to everyone else) books on sale.
5. Red lines
Shira   (11.04.11)
One wonders about the long-term effects on society of women being forced to become invisible. For example, I'm sure that the Adi organization's officials would never dream of giving precedence to men over women regarding organ transplants. But if women remain invisible in their ads for a long enough time, who's to say that the attitude might not trickle in, however subtly at first? Think about it.
6. Where have all the women gone?
citizen   (11.04.11)
They have retreated. Women’s cries for social justice and equality in the Haredi community were never a strong cry. You would think that progress in education would have led to stronger women’s voices, but where are the learned women, the teachers, professors, religious women leaders (are there any?) who are not afraid to speak out, confront the dictates of Haredi rabbis, demand full equality as a fundamental human right? It is not clear, from this article, who dictated which images would go into the ADI campaign but what is clear is that the campaign was careful not to antagonize the Haredi community (read: men) and until Haredi women fight back, you will see more such campaigns.
7. Haredim and women
Ad ,   Usa   (11.04.11)
One day when the rise of homo sexuality in the haredi world becomes public they will stop creating all male situations and encourage the presence of women.
8. Great ariticle! Very true!
Jew1 ,   Ashdod   (11.04.11)
Both the sides are exploiting woman. Secular side with their sexuality and nakedness and haredi side with dis-respecting and downgrading and insulting them and making them feel as if it's crime to be borne as woman. But there is one big difference and that is freedom to choose. In secular side woman chooses to do or photographed as she thinks is right but in haredi side she is forced and laws are imposed on her. I hope that all those leaders who are so keen to bend to haredi wishes for votes, must note that we woman are also big banks of votes and time has come to give votes to a party who is taking care of woman's rights.
9. shira - dont b overly optimistic.
oferdesade ,   israel   (11.04.11)
in some times, in some places, when given the choice between an infant and the mother, some would go for the former - even in cases where the infant is still an unformed embryo and the 12 yr old mother was sired screaming and shouting by her father....
10. #6, I concur, Haredi women need to liberate themselves.
Michael ,   California, USA   (11.05.11)
Men cannot impose freedom on Haredi women. Those women have to find strength to liberate themselves. They ought to learn from the feminist movements of the past in America and Europe. It is possible, it is achievable. Haredi women need to understand that serving their spoiled husbands, fathers, brothers achieves nothing. Stop feeding them, stop cleaning houses and washing clothes, stop having their babies. Demand equality, education, freedom of choice. Demand donating organs as part of an egalitarian medical system. Stop moving to the back of the bus, stand up and be counted, Haredi women.
11. Power to the people!
R ,   Israel   (11.04.11)
Women constitute abut 50% of the population. If all women were to go on strike - not patronize the bus line that enables segregation, not patrionize the businesses of those who endorse it, not donate money to any organization that contributes to making women second class citizens, there would be change.
