1. Turkey has not claim
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (11.05.11)
Turkey is two countries away from our territorial waters and we do not need their permission to do anything whatsoever. Just another stupid threat from very stupid people.
2. TURKEY ISRAEL GAS
DISCHEM ,   USA/ISRAEL   (11.05.11)
SINCE WHEN IS TURKEY THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN ABOUT WHO CAN OR CAN NOT LOOK NATURAL IN THE EAST MED.
3. The problem is the UN Convention on the law of the sea
Ibrahim ,   Turkey   (11.06.11)
The US and Turkey (amongst other countries) have not signed nor ratified the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Accordingly, the concept of Exclusive Economic Zone is alien to these countries. They apply the equidistant formula to resolving maritime border disputes. Hence, Turkey does not recognize the EEZ agreements between Cyprus and Israel because it encroaches on Turkish waters according to Turkish law and the predecessor to the UN Convention of the law of the sea.
4. The US will stand with Israel and Turkey
Stephen in New York   (11.06.11)
will get smashed. Noble Energy is a US company.
5. HUH?
Brett Tiernan ,   Rock Hill USA   (11.05.11)
Why is Turkey even addressing this issue?? Is Turkey still upset about the Flotilla? Whatever it is, GET OVER IT. Turkey has been over-run by Islamic CRAZIES and I guess Turkey is simply venting frustrations again.
6. TURKS ARE BECOMING THE "NEW IRAN"
American ,   Los Angeles   (11.06.11)
and the threats towards Israel will not be without consequences for the jihadist regime in Ankara. In case of military confrontation the turks must know that this will be their last war and turkey will be part of the history books.
7. Just try it, Turkey...
Vlad   (11.06.11)
The Turkish Navy may be bigger, but it primarily consists of decommissioned US warships, no match for Israel's missile and electronic jamming technology and the close air cover the Israeli Navy has.
8. Without cyprus gets reunited, the Greek Cypriots can not cla
Matt ,   Los Angeles   (11.06.11)
As Israelis and the rest well know, there is an ongoing dispute in divided Cyprus. It is premature and unacceptable for Greek Cypriots to get into any agreements regarding the natural resources belonging to the inhabitants of the entire island (Turkish and Greek Cypriots) Its natural for Turkish Cypriots and Turkey to block such provocations before the ongoing dispute gets resolved and the island reunites.
9. ??
Tazz1287 ,   Spain   (11.05.11)
The Mediterranean is a former turkish lake. No claims? read history, buy a book. stop being ignorant. They are turks.
10. Israel bettter watch its step
Charlie ,   London UK   (11.06.11)
Israel better watch what it does. North Cyprus is Turkish. Test Turkey and youi will find out
11. END THE OCCUPATION NOW
zionist forever   (11.06.11)
Turkey must end its illegal occupation of Cyprus and kurdistan and stop trying to dictate who can drill for gas in the Mediterranean.
12. Who the Hell Do the Turks Think They Are?
DrJLD   (11.05.11)
The hubris of Turkey must be met with assertions by the rest of the world that the open seas belong to all. The Eastern Mediterranean Sea is not a Turkish lake. Their utter arrogance is uncalled for and flies in the face of international maritime laws and rules. Erdogan is a wily manipulator. His military is not as strong as he thinks. It is time to call his bluff through legal forums and through strength of arms if forced to it. I am so weary of his constant threats and demands. What a blowhard!
13. Let the turkeys get stuffed!
jason white ,   afula, israel   (11.06.11)
14. #10 DEAR CHARLIE
LAWRENCE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (11.06.11)
Or what ?? regarding testing Israel : some have tried ,many have died but few have succeeded.Turkey is welcome to try its luck anytime ,but their demise will be short and sweet.
15. Turkey committing piracy in international waters!
(11.06.11)
16. Turkey has no special rights beyond national waters!
(11.06.11)
Any attempt to enforce excessive and illegal rights beyond their national waters will be considered an act if war, and responded to in kind. Don't make any mistake. Turkey will pay dearly for any action it takes against Israel and its allies.
17. #3 Then Turkey is a rogue state!
(11.06.11)
If this is so, Turkey should be declared a rogue state and slapped a heap of sanctions - just like its friends in Teheran!
18. Duhhhh
Mr Ireland ,   IRELAND   (11.06.11)
Israel wants the oil money, Cyprus wants the oil money, Turkey wants to protect the interests of its people in Cyprus, who suffered attempted genocide by the greeks. Thats different. There is no easy solution, but if anyone pushes Turkey to far it WILL declare war, its done so before to protect its people. The USA couldn't win in little Afgahnistan, it would be STUPIDITY BEYOND BELIEF if it were to back Israel in starting a war about oil against Turkey. That would bring major Islamic powers into the fray. Israel, USA etc MUST back off and force diplomacy on Cyprus - that is all Turkey are asking. Is it worth another world war not to give it to them?
19. Turkey is a Guarantor power in Cyprus along with Britain
Oliver Twist ,   The world   (11.06.11)
Some people on this forum need to read Article IV of the Treaty of Guarantee 1960 between Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom before labeling Turkey as an occupier in Cyprus. Furthermore, by analogy Gibraltar's sovereignty is disputed by Spain yet the international community does not call the UK an occupier in Gibraltar. Why?
20. "Turkey has not claim"
Nixos ,   Turkey   (11.06.11)
How dare you call the whole Turkish nation stupid? It takes one to know one. Did you forget that the Turks saved your race when the Spaniards through you out and only the Turks would save you? I suppose stupidity and ungratefulness go hand-in-hand.
21. Turkey bombast
paul sullivan ,   dublin Ireland   (11.06.11)
Perhaps Turkey might assist the process of Cyprus re-unification rather than entering into the affairs of another state and bombastically issuing instructions. The continuing pointless occupation of northern Cyprus, recognised by no other state in the world outside Ankara should be an issue more on Turkey's agenda. Whereas in 1974 there was a justifiable reason for sending in troops to provide protection to the ethnic Turkish population, the continuing occupation is unacceptable. A modern democracy like Turkey can hardly justify colonialism of this type, when there is no rational threat.
22. To 21
Oliver Twist ,   The world   (11.07.11)
The Turkish Cypriots, former constituent members of the Republic of Cyprus, have now declared their independence and no longer want to be part of the Republic of Cyprus established in 1960. No one can prevent the right to self determination of the Turkish Cypriots. In fact, even without recognition the Turkish Cypriots (TC's) are doing very well for themselves. Furthermore, Statehood and recognition are two independent things. The TC's have achieved statehood and also part recognition.
23. gas proprietorship
Mat ,   uk   (11.07.11)
if the palistinians will go to the UN and say it belongs to them they may succeed
24. To no. 10 the jenious!!!
MARY ,   Greek Cyprus   (11.07.11)
Ask your friends who regognise North Turkish Cyprus to help you. Can u find one? if not ask my help I will try my best Mr Charlie........
25. To 21 Paul sullivan
MARY ,   Greek Cyprus.   (11.07.11)
[A Modern democracy like Turkey] !!!!! Did you ever go there to have an idea of this democracy? or just watching from far distance?
26. #3 - your claim is valid ONLY if N. Cyprus belongs to Turkey
William ,   Israel   (11.08.11)
And no part of Cyprus, even the occupied Northern part, is property of Turkey. That's been established already and the reason why NO ONE globally (except Turkey) recognizes it as Turkish. That fact withstanding, the Republic of Cyprus, the part NOT under the occupation of Turkey and an independent nation is allowed to make agreements with other sovereign nations per the UN charter governing sovereignty. That being said, the area where Cyprus is drilling is SOUTH of the Island, as well as the area covered by the agreement with Israel. There by, no part of Turkish claimed waters, or even Lebanese for that matter, is close to the exploration sites, and cannot be blocked by the silly claim you made.
27. #8 - but it doesn't legally forbid Greek Cypriots
William ,   Israel   (11.08.11)
from entering into agreements until that time. After all, the occupation of Turkey in itself is illegal and not accepted by anyone in the global community. One way this can be mollified is by Greek Cypriots setting up an escrow account for revenue of such energy finds, for the North, on the condition that the North pays its fair share of capital expenses which the South incurred, and that NO revenues be transferred outside the island (e.g. occupied Cyprus does not funnel energy revenues to Ankara under false claims of ownership).
28. #10 - why doesn't anyone else agree?
William ,   Israel   (11.08.11)
1) no one accepted the Turkish occupation of the Island since 1974. It's still considered illegal by the global community. 2) the deal Israel makes is with the sovereign Republic of Cyprus which Turkey has no say over. It's like Sudan being pissed and threatening war because Darfur exercised its sovereign rights to make deals with other nations. Wait - that is probably what will happen...also illegal.
29. #18 - ah, no bias here, huh?
William ,   Israel   (11.08.11)
Turkey is painted as the victor fighting for the rights of the oppressed while Israel and Cyprus are painted as the villains sucking oil wealth from others. Are you part of the Occupy Dublin movement, better known as Pub Occupants? Documentation of the 1974 invasion by Turkey shows no such proof that Greeks tried to kill Turks in Cyprus, but the result of the Turkish invasion did show mass killings of Greek Cypriots, theft of property, ethnic cleansing of Greek Cypriots, then flooding the occupied island with Turks from the mainland. All of these are illegal under the Geneva Convention....but in your eyes, Turkey is fighting for human rights. Really? Israel has every right to the energy fields right off its coast, just like the Republic of Cyprus does. It's enshrined in law. To deny that claim in favor of a nation who does not even have territorial waters butting the gas fields is pure racist discrimination. Turkey has rejected many negotiations in the past over Cyprus because it blocked them from retaining control over part of the island, and sharing resources. Iran has the same issue with the UAE islands it illegally occupies for years.
30. #19 - Gilbraltar was British for hundreds of years
William ,   Israel   (11.08.11)
pretty much before Intl Laws and conventions were in place. In a recent vote, the residents there chose overwhelmingly to stay with the UK. In Cyprus, Turkey would have the upper hand if it didn't ethnically cleanse Greek Cypriots from part of the island, kill many of them, steal their property, and bring foreign Turks to immigrate to the island. But it did, the global community didn't accept it, and Turkey remains in violation. Turkey acted outside of the Treaty of Guarantee thus making the agreement void.
