31. Your fogot
yaacov ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (11.08.11)
your article doesn't talk about a fact that the Central Bureau of Statistics will never publish. While religious people are making children, none religious are taking care of their dogs (sometimes several in the same familly), spending money and al lot of water on them and polluting the all country with their shits
32. orthodox 'bomb'
moron ,   galut   (11.08.11)
and the secular modern day hellenists' political correctness and lust for assimilation is not a 'bomb'?
33. The moment of truth.
John Prophet   (11.08.11)
History is continuously being created moment by moment. The future has infinite junctions that it may pass throughout. At this moment Israel's future lies in the hands of one man, P.M. Netanyahu. Will he be remember in the same breath as Churchill, or Chamberlin? Time will tell.
34. London's real worry is the decline of the left..
Chaim ,   Israel   (11.08.11)
Often what is not said is far more important than what is said. London's real worry is about the decline of the Israeli left. Which is something that patriotic Jews should welcome. The left, not Haredim, pose the real threat to Israel. It was not Haredim which brought on Israel's flight from South Lebanon, Gaza, Oslo, arming terrorists and countless other dangerous travesties.
35. Coming soon to downtown Tel Aviv......
Secular Beast   (11.08.11)
Stoning Women To Death A LA Eyeran& Taliban
36. if you say that in london you d de jailed
hadad ,   U.K   (11.08.11)
but its a shame that you can throw this rabbish in Israel in the name of freedom and no one can shut your mouth. You are scared of the Haredim becouse you are jellous.
37. That's when the state will cease to exist
Gracie ,   Israel   (11.08.11)
All the working seculars will leave - no-one will serve in the army the state will have no money and the Israel that we once was - would no longer be - Keep the datim the hell out!!!!! It's only thanks to the secular population that we have a country.
38. The real danger: jounalists who vehiculate clichés
Gil ,   Switzerland   (11.08.11)
but cannot think. What do you reproach to Haredim actually Mr London? This is not clear from the article; that they are not like you? Pathetic.
39. If it bothers you so much Yaron...
Eli ,   Jerusalem   (11.08.11)
you can always move back to London, the place your family came from. What a chutzpah to combine the Haredi numbers with the Arabs. You show your true colors, your hatred of Jews and your paranoia. If you "zionists" would have had courage you would have kicked out the Arabs a long time ago. Since your children are not reproducing and running to make yerida to Germany...as you sow so shall you reap. I place my trust in G-d and the Jewish people not in you athiests.
40. Ultra-orthodox bomb
MTS ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (11.08.11)
Ariel Ben's talkback should remind us all how dangerous it will be to Israel and the world Jewish community when those Jews who think and speak as he does become a majority in Israel. Perhaps he should pray to God that his views will not come to fruition.
41. London/Haredim
Ed Codish ,   Pardessiya, Israel   (11.08.11)
Most of the comments here are pointless, because all statements that God will protect us or that our survival depends on Torah observance are entirely illogical even if they are true. That is, they are completely undemonstrable (perhaps even, considering the Holocaust and other events in Jewish history, questionable) and so cannot be argued about or sensibly written about. I think the respondents opposing London know this, or they would not resort to absurd insults ("self-hating Jew," arrested for incitement," "ignorant putz," "childish," etc.) Such words are written in anger and anger is almost always based on fear. What are these people afraid of? A possibility is fear of intelligence or a spreading and worrisome fear of rationality itself. This is not good because while one can lead one's life irrationally, a State cannot function irrationally, or not for long. This, I think, is London's own concern. Ed Codish
42. @ Lawrence "How to deal with..."
Markus ,   Karmi'el   (11.08.11)
WELL SAID!!! I agree 100% GOD worked 6 days, so we of course also should work!
43. "G-d helps a moving vessel."
solomon ,   bklyn   (11.08.11)
"G-d helps a moving vessel." HaShem will help us as long as we don't rely solely on HaShem. Prayers are good, but better if backed up by a united IDF and a united Israel. Israel won it's battles with the help of HaShem AND the IDF. What would have happened in 1948, 1967 and 1973 if Israel sat back and waited for HaShem to do something? Israel HAS been destroyed before and it's people scattered. It could happen again (chas v'chalila!) if Israel is divided, with soldiers in the IDF listening to their rabbis and not their commanders.
44. #2 birth rate
bernice ,   illiois   (11.08.11)
Israel is susidizing Arab and non Jewish birthrate so be proud and happy that Jews are being born. Don't you have any children?
45. jewish children
chaim witz   (11.08.11)
The worst of all is to listen to stupid comments from intelligent people. Birth rate among israeli arabs is high, an among israeli jews it is low. That means in another 30 years JEWS WILL BE A MINORITY IN ISRAEL, i.e., the country will be gone. And you complain orthodox jews have too many children? They are saving the country!!
46. THE HOLY TORAH SAYS
LAWRENCE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (11.08.11)
Men aged twenty must go to the army and man should work for his living .It does not say to dress like a penguin and to behave like fanatics. .
47. Extremism led to 2nd Temple destruction, Exile
Yitzhak ,   Israel   (11.08.11)
An in depth read of the 2nd Temple period shows that religious extremists, believing G-d was on their side, forced a reluctant Jewish population into rebellion against Rome. The consequences were a disaster we still feel to this day. This is what London is referring to when he warns that religious extremism can be more dangerous than external enemies.
48. don't force religious views
Rachel ,   Haifa Israel   (11.08.11)
i can't help but agree with this article. i don't want to live in a country where i feel forced to think/pray/live a certain way.
49. Sinat hinam (baseless hatred) of the left
m   (11.08.11)
It's astonishing to see such lack of intelligence in a "well known media personality". I'm sure Mr. London would prefer a demographic spike in arab birth rather than Jewish. We call that sinat hinam. Maybe you and your supporters should take some lessons in Judaism. Sorry, I forgot, you have to have some intelligence to be interested.
50. People who don't have enough children disappear
m   (11.08.11)
This is why we the Jews have lived for 3300 years. So maybe the left and their 1.2 children + dog + cat will have to import arabs just as Europe does to sustain it's demographic, but then they will become Palestine. Mr London you don't think too far do you?
51. Bravo, #2 Jason! 100%
Vered, Israel   (11.08.11)
52. 43 Solomon ,is it an utopy?
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (11.08.11)
The Rabbis and commanders might work together.
53. should I become secular??
Chaim Yankel Shmeel ,   London   (11.08.11)
This Yaron dude has totally convinced me. That's it, I have got to become secular right now. Give me a minute, let me just shave my head completely, rid of my yarmulke, now I have a cute pair of jeans, possibly hook up with a couple of blonde German aryans ....now I shall fit right in Reality....one second, let me find an Jew hating Arab to make out with.... Gosh ...that feels better. Not.............. What world reality would it have to take to convince you.? ...it's been tried before...........they hate us because they are supposed to hate us....hitler never stopped killing us because we stopped loving Hashem and we carry on being proud Jews because WE LOVE BEING JEWISH ... WE LOVE THE PROMISED LAND...AND WE LOVE HASHEM FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER ALWAYS... My friends there is way more to life than politics, our petty predictions of what may or may not happen and religious or secular...I long deleted those words from my vocab, there is loving and being proud of who we are and what we have OR not..
54. Right
Eli ,   Haifa   (11.08.11)
Just looking at the responses to this thing show how correct London is. The difference is that in the secular world, Religious can be as religious as they want and non-religious can be an non-religious as they want. In Theocracy, which is unfortunately where we're heading, we will all be forced to worship the old Yahwist Canaanite cult. It's the 21st century. But some people would like to keep us in the 10th B.C.
55. Chicken little declares "the sky is falling"
William ,   Israel   (11.08.11)
Nice little jab there, Yaron. Not only do you voice the racist leanings of your Leftist friends by labeling the ultra-Orthodox as narrow-minded, extremist, and all controlling of Israeli life... you also declare their growth in numbers is an alarm for the secular population...much like, I believe, the way Arabs declare Jewish births to be a scourge that threatens the very future of world existence. Just as Ultra-Orthodox have a minority of extremists, so do seculars, but you exalt them as "intellectuals" and "morally superior". To me, your article does raise alarm bells - those indicating both the desperation of the secular Left because of their losing influence over the Israeli population, and the growing intolerance from a group who claims they stand for "freedom" and "justice".
56. #37 Gracie, Are you giving up the State of Israel?
Michael ,   California, USA   (11.08.11)
It may happen the way you describe if Hilonim give up. It did happen two thousand years ago when Haredim invited the Romans to destroy Israel. Will we give up without a fight? I think a civil war is preferable to just giving up.
57. #41 WELL SAID ED
LAWRENCE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (11.08.11)
Haredim are just as irrational as the left.
58. Racheal #30
JDE ,   Boston, USA   (11.08.11)
How dare you attack this basic right of every human being. Having a large broods of children is irresponsible. The world can't provide for all of the people it has now. However, leaving that aside - you want to have 15 kids? Fine - as long as you're willing to pay to support them. Don't expect to be supported by the taxes of Liberal and secular Jews for whom you have nothing but contempt.
59. A FOOL IS CONSIDERED WISE UNTIL HE OPENS HIS MOUTH.
SAGE   (11.08.11)
60. ED #41
Robert   (11.08.11)
The entire survival of the State and for that matter the Jews throughout the ages is "irrational". Maybe if you and your ilk truly opened your "rational mind" , you would have to admit that G-d watches over us as he has for the many centuries (and thus not worry what the rest of the world says or does). The Haredi world has many faults, but their "irrationality" explains our continuing existence more than any theory that has or will be offered.
