1. This guy is not the first innocent person who was killed...
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (11.11.11)
... under such circumstances. Although he may be the first Jewish one. Generally, the settlers are very willing to accept the army version of this kind of incident. So why not thistime?
2. Soldier burden
Palestinian   (11.11.11)
'carry the burden of killing an innocent man for the rest of his life'. But if the soldier killed accidentally a Palestinian, he won't feel any guilt. I've not heard ever someone said the same if the victim is Palestinian. Just a thought....
3. To all the armchair generals...
Joe ,   Israel   (11.11.11)
I dare anyone to try and hit a cars wheels traveling at above average highway speeds (110km/h+) in the dawn hours (the hardest time to see) while only have a second or two to engage. In addition, 5.56mm bullets wouldn't do any damage to an engine block so there is no point in shooting there. As sad as this incident is, the soldier did the right thing and the driver was the one at fault for: 1)- Driving without lights in the dark hours of the morning 2)- Failing to heed soldiers multiple warnings (lights, gunshots in the air, etc) 3)- Driving at hazardous speeds and swerving all over.
4. to Palestinian- it has been heard but it is rare
Israeli ,   Israel   (11.11.11)
it is rare because it is assumed that all Palestinians are guilty (and many killed are guilty combatants). it is difficult for Israelis to view the "enemy" that calls for their destruction as potentially innocent. The product of war. sad.
5. palestinian
pini   (11.11.11)
seriously? Your ppl blow themselves up and were supposed to feel sympathy?

You have some nerve. When the Fogel family was slaughtered, you people passed out sweets. You have been known to celebrately wildly when Jews are massacred. What right have you, then, to ponder why Jews do not necessarily mourn the passing of an ersatz "Palestinian?"
7. wife too would pity soldier who killed her husband because
observer ,   Egypt   (11.11.11)
there were two of them with him. was the widow one pretty?
8. Reporting...
karl ,   Santa Cruz, CA   (11.11.11)
Why are we hearing about what the soldiers did and did not do from the daughter of the vicitm? She apparently wasn't even there and is relating the story second hand. Why not get the story from an IDF spokesman? And what kind of policy is it that has IDF soldiers shoot out the tires from a speeding vehicle instead of taking out the driver after firing warning shots? The soldiers fired into the air. I don't know about you but if I see soldiers firing into the air I stop my car instead of keep racing along. If they were aware of the checkpoint, from their earlier experience, why were they unaware this time? This Rabbi got himself killed and 2 women injured.

"But if the soldier killed accidentally a Palestinian, he won't feel any guilt" How do you know ? Read more here and stop typing stupid thoughts.

The Israeli army always apoligizes when Palestinian civilians are killed during war. And even treats Palestinian civilians wounded in Israeli military actions free of charge at Israeli hospitals. The Palestinian terrorists never apoligize for murdering Israeli civilians. And even boast of their evil deeds.
11. Oh, please.
Tzanchan ,   Los Angeles   (11.11.11)
You speed up to a checkpoint and then high tail it after a warning shot, what really do expect to happen? "and the soldier, instead of yelling, firing into the air, at the tires or at the lower body – something every new IDF recruit learns - shot (the rabbi) in the head and neck." Utter nonsense. Think quick, shoot quick, zeo zeh. Sorry to say, but the rabbi took liberties which didn't work out for him. To reprimand the soldier is a farce.
12. #3:You are the stupidest armchair general of all.

It is also possible to stretch a spiked chain across the road, which blows out the tires, bringing the car to an immediate halt. That is what is used in the United States. Fire at the tires of a moving vehicle risks a miss, and if a bullet hits the gas tank, everybody blows up. Other than that, I agree with your point 100%. What did the driver THINK would happen if he paid no attention to the warning shots and the commands to stop?

You are wrong, all israeli soldiers feel bad when civilians are killed. And you should also know that IDF is the best in the world NOT to harm civilians in combat situations. And you should also know that NOONE feel bad when a terrorist is killed. And palestinians shooting rockets, raiding into Isrel with bombs and explosives and killing people of Israel in other ways, they are TERRORISTS. And as a norwegian I do not feel bad. What is bad; you have terrorist leaders twisting your brains!!!

Good Comment Dorothy. This is the second rational intelligent comment I have read in all the TB's today.... Whats going on. Is this place actually being populated by decent people who can make their own minds up and know when they are being fed crap.
17. an unhappy event.
seth ,   deering, usa   (11.12.11)
Too many die. The article mentions that the soldier failed to aim at the lower body per training. How do you do that at the driver of a moving vehicle? It would seem impossible.
18. Another tragic example of "Friendly Fire"
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (11.12.11)
