bad idea even in country with good government
2. The Vaad Hair runs a monopoly mafia here in Montreal

so much so that kosher meat is prohibitive for the average kosher family. They ought to be ashamed of themselves for hiking the price of kosher meat and especially kosher milk. Its an outrage...and you know who suffers? Kids... They ought to stop the price gouging...it discourages people from eating kosher. They wont do it for they are running a 'kosher' monopoly and quite simply they couldnt care less. I keep kosher but the prices for kosher meat and milk here is outrageous.
3. monopoly mafia
Nathan ,   montreal, canada   (11.16.11)
There is no monopoly in Montreal. The KSR is active competition. The Vaad's hashgacha is trusted more, though. And meat is not that much more expensive (if at all) than other Canadian cities. Beef is restricted to Montreal shechita, but not poultry. As for milk, it is the Canadian supply management system that keeps prices high. Chalav Yisrael is an option, not a chiyuv, so you can get the cheaper milk, and still be kosher.
4. #3 written like a true apologist for the Vaad Mafia

Can you be more transparent? You havent got a clue as to what you are saying. I have been involved in the food industry over the past 35 years. Kosher meat in Montreal is prohibitive and kosher milk is an out and out genevah. Like I said the only ones who suffer are religious families. 2% Milk at $4.69 for a two liter jug is outrageous. Kosher meat here is simply crap..I wouldnt feed it to a dog. I see many people on a Sunday morning buying old moldy meat at Maxis (CDN and Bedford) at 50% off simply because they cant afford proper meat. Chickens are no better, overpriced fatty chickens weighed down with salt and water. Total crap. I repeat that is all due to the Vaad and their selfish practices. They do nothing for Kosher, they are simply running a closed shop monopoly.
5. #4 Vaad Mafia
Nathan ,   montreal, canada   (11.17.11)
It seems your prime interest is being bitter, repeating your meaningless insults and lashon hara. Kosher meat is expensive, but there are many sales on good quality meat & chicken. The Vaad does not control milk prices. The government does.
6. #4 I Agree
E ,   Calgary   (11.17.11)
We used to buy our meat and chickens from Montreal, but the price is outrageous and the quality is crap. The beef is simply disgusting and the chicken (old hen) fatty and foul tasting (pun intended) while the flesh is black next to the bones. Ug! I shiver just remembering it!

I completely agree with you. In Canada, Neilson brand of milk and ice-cream is perfectly kosher. Basically all products that carry the symbols "COR" "MK" or "U" are not only kosher but cost almost half the price of the other brands in the kosher isle section of the supermarket. However kosher meat and cheese do cost substantially more that the non-kosher and it's a pity because a lot of people would prefer to buy kosher products (even non-Jews) but can't afford it. I feel lucky to have a good paying job but (if and) when I retire, I might sing another tune or I would change my eating habits.

Sorry to break it to you both, the Hechture industry from Vaad Hi'ir and KSR is no different from OU, Triangle K, Circle K etc... They are ALL GONIFS who use the public's trust to line their pockets! Those who observe have no choice, but kid yourself not, it is a racket! What started as a legitimate effort to make sure Kosher foods were available has become a huge money maker and the players fight each other like any other racketeering mafia like groups.
9. #8 you are right on the money..The Kashrus business
Al   (11.17.11)
is simply a business. As a kid growing up in Montreal, my mother who was very religious would of course buy kosher meat. Milk, well we drank Bordens Milk..My mother would say that there isnt any chazer in it. Bread we would buy from a kosher bakery. As to the other products my mother bought raw fruits and vegs along with some canned goods. We ate like kings and we were thin. Only passover time would she dare to buy some crappy kosher products from the USA Today any piece of crap gets the kosher spiel..Most of it is satly poison that isnt worth a damn.
