1. Unmaturity !.
Arn. ,   Sweden.   (12.11.11)
It is written - " Thou shallt Love thy Neighbour as Thyself " !. This has two sides in practise - " The Good thing You want others to do to You, You should also do to them ", and - " With what Measurie and Judgement You Measuries and Judges others, should also be Measuried and Judged to You again " !. Comment - Do not Women want to have the Freedom to sit wherever They want ? If, Why cantsame Freedoom to sit wherever They want ?. Nobodys Freedom, can according to the above, stand against anybody ellses Freedom. This is the REAL EQUALITY in Freedoom !!!. If Men want to restrict their Freedom to only sit among Men, does that in anyway take the same Freedoom from Women, or, in any way Hurt Womanhood ? The only Exeption to this above is that, you cant Force your Love upon others. Arn.Sweden.
2. Needs someone with Rosa Parks' charisma
C McCoy ,   Canada   (12.11.11)
IE US bus integration 1955. To get any real pizazz, the campaign needs someone with some public visibility. Other than that, it's a non starter.
3. Welcome to Israel the new Teliban state
David ,   Tel Aviv Israel   (12.11.11)
4. separation
Aliza   (12.11.11)
as a Charedi woman, I agree, separation is necessary where halacha calls for it. separation on buses and side walks and places of commerce are not halachic requirements. this kind of separation is not acceptable and is not required, is is discrimination and causes damage to kal Yisrael by degrading our own women. Extreme responses like this do not encourage people to do teshuva or to love or like the religious, it just encourages alienation, hatred and further extremism on their part. As Torah Jews it is our responsibility to be wise. It is time for this element who are building walls are not required, cause damage to see that they are not behaving in a Torah manner. One can not teach anyone Torah by forcing it down their throats, all the more so if it is not really Torah. The response to force feeding, is usually to vomit it back. Daven, behave with ahavat achim to all (this includes women). That will bring the Moshiach faster, instead of the hatred you are creating with your foolish, non-Torah require rules.
5. Forcing sex-segregation again
Israeli grandma   (12.11.11)
Delighted that the general public is fighting this minority deligitimisation of women. To compare the problems of drug, prostitution etc. to segregated buses is rubbish. The Ultra Ortho public use prostitutes, have members who are sadly hooked on drugs, and there has been a new high in the number of admitted paedophile attacks and family violence etc. in the last few years. Segregation of women in public, mafia like attacks on dance studios, respectable bookshops and damage to public advertising is not the way to go if you live by torah Moshe me Sinai. Of course Israeli advertisers must tone down the sexist images which offend many many non religious people, but thats a different issue.
6. separation
chava ,   yerushalayim   (12.11.11)
I don't understand the problem. The barriers in the Mea Shearim neighborhood were put up during Sukkot & Simchat Torah because of the crowds then. Buses and the light rail are the same thing. People (men and women both) don't like being pushed up against other people, all the more so when the other people are of the opposite sex. I dislike sitting on a bus seat next to a man whose leg is touching mine. Standing on a crowded bus also leads to contact. If crowded conditions mean physical contact, at least it should be with the same sex.
7. Dozens of bus lines?
shua ,   jerusalem   (12.11.11)
"Critics say that in practice, dozens of bus lines are still gender segregated and that women who want to sit at the front are often subjected to verbal and sometimes physical assaults." Fact: The actual bus lines that are seperate in Jerusalem are the 49A, 40, 56 and sometimes the 1,2and 3. Of those buses there are alternate buses of (49A) 25, 45, (40, 56) 10, 64, 67, 71, 72, 74, 75. Fact: All the seperate lines are meant for predominantly haredi neighborhoods. Fact: It is very rare for someone to verbally or physically abuse a woman for sitting in the wrong part of the bus, unless you are looking for a fight and make a scene of it. In general the men ask politely or give a gentle reminder, but almost never insist. Fact: There is actually more room and seats in the back of the bus, so what are you crying about? Please note that it was a religious woman that chimed in about the women sitting in the front. This article was clearly written by the critics as stated quite obviously in the first sentence of this talkback. Good Day!!
8. There are as many extremes ...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (12.11.11)
in the secular and the orthodoxe society.Let us, the the silent middleway Israelis , try to live in harmony and fight peacefully for it. To stand against our REAL enemies, being UNITED is a must.
9. game changer
Mike ,   Uk   (12.11.11)
Next the haredi will demand that women cannot drive cars or vote or walk the streets unless accompanied by their husbands - Israel is turning into Saudi Arabia. The 60 year experiment of creating a homeland for the jews has failed, those who have any sense will leave the country for good, the government's desperate attempts to woo then back, is laughable.
10. muslim country, long distance bus: all seats taken...
eporue ,   europe   (12.11.11)
almost all with just one guy... then two young women (ca 16-20) enter the bus... they remain standing in the aisle... after about three minutes, one of the guys gets up, sitting elsewhere... how likely is it, a haredim man would do this?
11. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it common knowledge...
Henry from New York ,   USA   (12.11.11)
that making something forbidden usually makes people want it more?
12. #10, -im is a plural masculine ending, just use -i.
Henry from New York ,   USA   (12.11.11)
13. #8, some examples, please?
Henry from New York ,   USA   (12.11.11)
14. this happens when people from the middle ages want to travel
eporue ,   europe   (12.11.11)
...in 21st century spacel shuttles (light train, bus).... if you want to live in the middle ages, then travel accordingly
15. I got on a bus to Tzfat, there were no seats
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (12.11.11)
except the one fold down seat in the front and I was told I couldn't sit there. I replied, "Yes I can, I bought a ticket and I am not standing up." They repeatedly told me I couldn't sit there and I repeatedly told them I was a stubborn American who had bought a ticket and was pushed out of the way by men trying to get on the bus first. Finally they got some man in the last row of men seats to get up and come to the front and give me his seat and some woman and I took those two seats. The one guy took the front fold down seat where no one could sit an the other guy stood, better than an old woman standing for sure. The young men going to Meron to pray at the rabbi's grave didn't get up to give their seats to the women who were standing so I wonder if their prayers were heard with much intensity.
16. Ora
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.11.11)
Many extremes in the secular world in this particular field ? Because we oppose this segregation ? Because we don't want our women and daughters to be called "whores" by those charidim ? Being united is a must , yes , but those charidim want us to live as they do , respect their behaviour but don't accept our way of life . Read the story about 1000 TV sets , and some of the reactions .
17. Nr 1,
Arn. ,   Sweden.   (12.11.11)
Something I intended to Write in my post fell apart, If you will post my Whole meaning it should have been like this - It is written - " Thou shallt Love thy Neighbour as Thyself " !. This has two sides in practise - " The Good thing You want others to do to You, You should also do to them ", and - " With what Measurie and Judgement You Measuries and Judges others, should also be Measuried and Judged to You again " !. 18. #17, one of the times when quoting scripture makes sense...
Henry from New York ,   USA   (12.11.11)
well chosen.
19. 16 Charles
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (12.11.11)
With"extremes in the secular world "i am thinking of a minority of Israelis who behave very badly.Ask hotelkeepers abroad their opinion about them. But i also know that most Israelis are fine people. The same counts for the orthodoxe society. Have a fine week Charles.
20. 16 Add.
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (12.11.11)
The orthodoxe way of life is a full time job [big families, visits to sick people, nursing grand-parents,praying ,learning Tora and so on].They really don t have time to keep busy with the secular way of life. What you read in the papers is about a minority.
21. But Ora, the arsim aren't seculars, they're nihilists.
Henry from New York ,   USA   (12.12.11)
22. Nr 18.
Arn. ,   Sweden.   (12.12.11)
The Word of HASHEM is for the Heart, not for the Head only. Because HASHEM sees to the Heart of Mankind, and not to the Head only. No offense though. Arn.Sweden.
23. #22, we have differing thoughts on the origins of the words
Henry from New York ,   USA   (12.12.11)
but I will respect your beliefs on the matter. They do come in handy at times.
24. honor thy MOTHER and FATHER.
Josh   (12.12.11)
The isolation and making it a sin to simply look at a woman in any fashion including the most normal is dishonoring thy mother. Chet! There is no such thing as a do it your self Torah creator. you shall not add. They are sinning by creating a separation of society. I this some divide and conquer ploy?
25. Ora , Bad behaviour ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.12.11)
Ask EL AL people about chardi behaviour . The secular way of life is having a FULL TIME JOB to feed their families so they don't need public welfare .
26. 25 Charles,What i am trying to say...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (12.12.11)
that both societies have a minority of bad elements and a majority of good elements.Let all the good elements be united. Charles,do you want to be part of the latter?
27. Ora
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.13.11)
The seculars you mentioned don't try to influence your way of life , while those charidim try to IMPOSE their lifestyle on all of us , you included . And they are not a minority , many of them do it .
28. Correction
Jonathan ,   San Francisco   (12.13.11)
Sex (in Ultra-Orthodox Standards) isn't "something dirty," but rather something holy. The very first Mitzvah (commandment) in the Torah is to be fruitful and multiply. The Ultra-Orthodox believe that it's dirty to fantasize about any women other than one's wife.
29. 27 Charles, Imposing a big mistake..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (12.13.11)
in my case it was a tragic mistake. My eldest son ,when twelve years old, wanted to go in a very religious Jewish school. At this time we were more traditional, and for egoistic reasons,we IMPOSED him a non religious Jewish school. We paid dearly for this fault. It seems not easy, for orthodoxe neither for secular, to accept other s way of life. But there is no other way,if we want to live together in harmony. But at least we can try.
30. Ora , this was in YOUR family
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (12.13.11)
You did'nt try to impose your way of life to everyone , only to your son . And charidim try to do it to EVERYONE : segregation in public transportation , billboards , book store , and so on . They want EVERYONE to "live" [ if we can call this live ] as they do .
