We need to follow the American example when it comes to making legislation because the current system is old and broken. If Anat Kam was an American and she stole thousands of classified documents she wouldn't be getting a slap on the wrist and appealing that she would be facing life in prison. US Army soldier Private Bradley Manning and he stole and passed onto Wikileaks a video tape of an Apache helicopter strike in Bagdad which killed two reporters and for it he faces 52 years in jail. Anat Kam stole 2000 classified documents and gave them to a reporter for publication and she is getting a slap on the wrist and to make it worse she is appealing it. If Bradley Manning can get 52 years for stealing a video of an Apache strike then if this was the US Anat Kam would probably be rotting in jail without hope of parol for the rest of her life. In the US they have the Foreign Agents Act which bans foreign governments donating to charities and everybody thinks its great and preserves democracy. In Israel the government wants to limit the amount that can be donated and its accused of an erosion of democracy by both leftist Israelis and foreign governments ( who make donations ) alike. In the US Supreme Court judges are appointed by the President on the advice of the Senate. In Israel the government considered Supreme Court judges being vetted by an independent Knesset committee and once again its an erosion of democracy. When it comes to legislation there is alot we could learn from the US but instead we have this strange system based on a mixture of Ottoman, British, European and domestic laws and most of the time the system doesn't work as its supposed to. We need a long term plan designed at changing alot of old laws and brining in new practical ones so we can have a system that works.

I can actually see that happening. Once she is out she will emigrate to some very liberal European country where she will write a book ANAT KAM AN INNOCENT VICTIM OF THE IDF We will hear all about how she was a her in stealing these documents and giving them to Blau for the sake of Israel but those dam IDF criminals foiled her wonderful plan and saw to it she was wrongfully imprisoned for 4.5 years. We will also hear testimonies from her friends and family who visited her how her human rights were abused by putting her under house arrest for 2 years whilst she awaited trial rather than being sent to prison. In Europe and the Muslim world the book will be an huge success making her rich and then she will sell the movie rights. Europe will fall in love with her same way they have fallen in love with Vanunu because he exposed military secrets.

I respectfully disagree. Ms. Kam's actions endangered every Israeli. Some countries' classified documents are not very important (I mean, really -- who cares about what may or may not be classified in, say, Vanuatu?). Israel's, on the other hand, are very important. I would have NO problem seeing the dissembling Ms. Kam locked away forever. In fact, I would have NO problem seeing her scheduled for a date with the executioner.
