33. Rabbi should not have criticised Jobs. none of his business
Alan ,   SA   (11.20.11)
34. Sorry, can't agree
Jose R ,   El Salvador   (11.21.11)
Never before has technology given society the oportunity to communicate as now, bringing us closer to each other, and exchanging information, feelings , etc. You can still see the bad, but it's up to us how we use the new tools.
35. job's $7 billion personal fortune
sweeter than honey ,   far away   (11.21.11)
willed to the family. bill gaites on the other hand has already given away about $24 billion to the most unfortunate and needy on the planet (not "palestinians"). yet who got the better press? the egotistical CEO, go figure. brave of the rabbi to be so iconoclastic.
36. The rabbi should have slammed Mark Zuckerberg, too,
Devorah   (11.21.11)

37. ,...
split ,   US   (11.21.11)
S. Jobs created something and made a fortune the old fashioned way he earned, our big shot rebbe created nothing and depends on handouts ,...
38. may be right; but timing SUX (END)

39. Jobs has something in common with other inventors.
Seth Bullock ,   USA   (11.21.11)
Like Edison, DaVinci, Henry Ford, Samuel Colt, Wright Bros, and many other brilliant inventors & innovators, Jobs has passed away. I agree with #4 that the problem is consumerism, not 'i' products. Blaming Jobs for human nature is as foolish as blaming DaVinci for the helicopter. Furthermore, what was Jobs supposed to do? Was he, 35 years ago, supposed to suppress his ideas because they might have negative consequences? Should other innovators have quit before starting? Where is techno progress supposed to end? Computers? Phones? Telegraphs? Cars? Trains? Saddles? Irrigation? Indoor plumbing? ... I'm happy not having to fetch water every day or die from common diseases, but hey, maybe I'm just selfish.
40. Hate to jump on the bandwagon, but...
Henry from New York ,   USA   (11.21.11)
I cannot disagree with anything this rabbi said, especially given the fact that Jobs was actually responsible for this iGarbage; as he did take control of the company again a while back when this marketing started. Also, useful protip: If everyone else is buying the exact same thing you are; it doesn't make you an individual, you're just another follower then.
41. #24 split- LOL

42. A big mistake
Mahlon Drumgoole ,   Newark NJ USA   (11.21.11)
For all of you social Darwinists, here are facts that are undisputed. Apple closed all of its US plants and opened factories in China. Thousands upon thpousands of US jobs were lost with nothing to replace them. If that's not bad enough, the workers in China work 7 days per week on an assembly line. They are not allowed to speak to anyone and have to get permission fom guards to speak. There were so many suicides that the factories have put up nets to break the fall of suicidal workers. Just today, a report showed that the vast majority of capital gains was earned by .1% of the population. You read it right--that is the majority of capital gains in the US were earned by the top one tenth of one peercent of the population. Basically, we are heading into an economic dictatorship because congress haspassed laws enabling companies like Apple to contribute raping American workers. Also, while refusiong to raise marginal rates for the extrememkly wealthy, congress is goin to pass laws making the age of social security eligibility higher and higher at a time when pensions (not congress) are eliminated and jobs for seniors are disappearing. What occupy wall street people don't understand is that the reason for the horrible economic environment in the US is not just the fault of wall street---although wall street's greed and cruelty are at a sky-high level. They should be occupying the workplace of the worst and biggest contributors to our economic survival---congress.
43. #16 LOL !
Salma ,   Palestine   (11.21.11)
please please i want a genius boyfriend someone like you ; )))
44. Another rabbi went bullsh*t...
PO ,   Ramat Gan, IL   (11.21.11)
... envy and selfishness is present also in the bible tales, it has NOT been invented by nowdays consumistic world. Further, those devices allows a lot of people to work better (me included...), being in contact better with their dear ones when far from home. Occasionally you can hear women singing in a iPhone: could that be the problem maybe? Anyway, this is the ultimate evidence that too much religion is not healthy for the brain...
45. Steve Jobs was an arab-american and a genius too!
christianpalestinian ,   hong kong   (11.21.11)
Lets not forget that.
46. This rabban is a dumb ass!
Yossef   (11.21.11)
for everyone who has worked with a computer Apple's revolution has been a benediction. I am one of them, I wrote my Doctorate dissertation in 1985 on one of the first Macintoshes. Suddenly computers became friendly and useful for something else than pure computation. I'll not develop more. Apple never stopped to bring simplicity of use and power in the hand of everybody and not only a small class of nerds or system engineers. And that's already GREAT. And by the way, what the rabban said is completely false, Steve Jobs, first with his Next Station, allowed to bring us the web, and internet + web is a powerful source of knowledge and a place for sharing informations as it never existed before, it's the opposite of I it's WE. The rabban must know that, for example, thanks to the web every Jew can find everything about judaism, or Torah or whatever else just by clicking some keys on his MacBook, or just sliding his finger on his iPhone or iPad. And of course it doesn't reduce to judaism, but, physics, mathematics, science, news, literature etc. Steve Jobs was a genius of his time. Selfish is not in the iDevices, but in our hearts, and it's there where selfish must be fought. The devices have nothing to do with that. A rabban "Lord" ? what is that ?
47. Sickening how some posters say its bcoz he had Leb roots.Sic
Alan ,   SA   (11.21.11)
They would find such a story attractive...Who cares what roots..Leb or Jewish or Budhist or Christian...He was a brilliant but difficult man who advanced mankind further...Just Rabbi had no business to criticise him dead or even alive.
48. Rabbi Sacks didn't "slam" Jobs
ora solomon ,   Zürich   (11.21.11)
The provocative headline that Rabbi Sacks slammed Steve Jobs is misleading. His statements are critical of the i Generation and consumer ethics taking over from real values. Don't take his words out of context.
49. Addition to ORA #48
Avaram Goldsmith ,   Toronto, Canada   (11.21.11)
To all Israeli partners which are not so aweare about consumerism and brainwash marketing system. This marketing brainwash is a business of millions if not billions of dollars which indoctrinate and base on the obssesion to adiction syndrom consumer behaivour. With high rate on unemployement and challenging situation the people chose these i pod insted of food and necesity products . A study done regarding all the gadges show for user a decline in ability to think and analyse, the brain become a storage of information site(as all i pod) and not able to perform basic thinking operation, Theis creating a situation of virtual world which all the solution are solve by pressing the button ENTER, disconnecting from reality and boostion egocentrism ME to the highest limit. The rabbi bring a part of this concerns which are in study and debate phase about impact of the consumer obssesive behaivour to these gadges exposure. Otherwise is a lot of bias to the rabbi Sachs remarks and took out from the context and exagerated disproportional reaction
50. I don't agree 100% with Rabbi Sacks
Mitchell Cohen ,   Gush-Etzion, Israel   (11.21.11)
With all due respect to Rabbi Sacks, I don't agree with him 100%. There is nothing wrong with technological advancement and success, as long as one remembers that Torah trumps all. As long as technology is put to use in positive ways and no matter how successful one is, one remembers where his success came from (Hashem), stops everything one day a week (Shabbat), and remembers the poor, the orphan, the widow, etc. etc. then there is nothing wrong with new technology and success....
51. RABBI SACKS PUT HIS FOOT IN IT
URBAN POET ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (11.21.11)
The good Rabbi should remember the old adage : even a fool is considered to be wise until he opens his mouth.
52. Correct you are!
Donn144 ,   Caldwell,NJ, USA   (11.22.11)
Thank you for calling it correctly!
53. #46 Yossef, Well put, very correct, more examples.
Michael ,   California, USA   (11.22.11)
This rebbe belongs to the Hall of Fame of ignoramuses, or rather, I should say, to the the Hall of Fame of Rabbis. I worked with Apple II for years before switching to the PC. Wrote many programs using the Pascal language, which was made simple by Apple II and accessible to everyone everywhere. One of my programs calculated energy use in buildings and printed the required forms for Code compliance in California. A friend of mine wrote program for solving differential equations numerically using Apple II and Pascal. It beats the Tanah in complexity and intelligence. Many more examples like that.
54. 41 ,...
split ,   US   (11.22.11)
Ever heard about Joseph Seagram or Samuel Bronfman not to mention Russian-Jewish oligarchs and their way of making fortunes ? That's my point our big shot rebbe wouldn't touch them with a 10' pole and we know why ,...
55. Apple
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (11.22.11)
What most people won't mention is what Steve Jobs did for Apple and all the people, who are ex tremely well off, because they were smart enough to load up on Apple stock, when it was $20 per share. As of yesterday, those shares were $369.01. I guess, the Rabbi doesn't have any Apple stock...
56. #54 split
solomon ,   bklyn   (11.23.11)
Who is "we" if not you alone? What is "why" if not 'only' your opinion? Your post is obtuse.
