1. "Netanyahu: Israel's democracy safe"... thanks to intl inter
eporue ,   europe   (11.23.11)
ference - and only for a while... your wannabe-dictator has quite a nerve, hasnt he ?
2. Israels problem is democracy has been taken to an extreme
zionist forever   (11.23.11)
Israel has adopted the European coalition government system which is flawed at the best of times although unlike in Europe where there are usually around 3-4 parties in Israel we got new parties forming all the time. There are 14 of them in the current Knesset and only 3 are not single issue parties that exist only to join coalitions to push their pet causes and of course next election we will have Yair Lapid joining in the party. In other countries you want to get into politics you join a big party that wants to run the country as a whole. Here you form your own party based on the few issues that your interested in and of course the vote is split even less power is in the hands of the single issue parties. If you can get about 10 seats well political experience doesn't matter because your pretty much guaranteed that your going to be made a senior minister, something Yair Lapid hopes to be after the next election. The threat to democracy in Israel is not Bibi and the laws he wants to pass its the democratic system itself. Its nice the little guy can be involved in politics but when there are to many bit players who don't want to actually run the country then you take the power away from the people who do want to run the country.
3. PM Netanyahu is afraid of losing his power!
(11.23.11)
4. "We'll never have 'thought police'"
BH ,   Iowa   (11.23.11)
Rabbi Eliyahu may disagree.
5. Democracy is for the people of the LAND
Sol ,   Israel   (11.23.11)
outsiders shouldn't get a say and that's IS DEMOCRACY. The leftists don't like it because their buddies from the EU are buying a say. Most newspapers and media in Israel are also leftist. They don't like the prospect of being held accountable for the lies and garbage they print. TOO BAD.
6. The day of rue
oneye ,   USA   (11.23.11)
Laws like this hurt the people, becuase it silences dissent. But screw the people. I'll make the political argument. Laws like this silence the opposition. So long as Bibi will be in power forever, this is a great idea. He won't of course. The day of rue is coming where his own law will be used against him to shut him up. Then we'll hear about how undemocratic it is - from Bibi himself.
7. Democracy? There is no democracy to save!
Rich ,   Toronto, Canada   (11.23.11)
The people of Israel have no controls over the corrupt government. Most of the MPs in the Knesset are appointed by parties, not elected. That is not democracy.
8. Libel bill
artcohn ,   Palo Alto USA   (11.23.11)
The libel bill is far less restrictive than the siuation in Britain, and even America. While some improvements in the bill could be made, the left wing's complaints about the bill are outrageous, and basically untrue.
9. The realm of the blind
mba ,   Israel   (11.23.11)
"In the realm of the blind, the half truth becomes king", "Why stick to facts when truths are being twisted every day"
10. Democracy
Sagi   (11.23.11)
does not exist in Israel and it never has done. A country with no Constitution and no direct electoral process can never be a democracy, ergo there is nothing to lose in this instance.
11. "thought police"
Sagi   (11.23.11)
The core, the nucleus, already exists for many years in Mea Shearim and the various sects who worship their long gone mentors. This core is growing and spreading and they have one aim in common, to control the minds and bodies of the entire populace. Just the exact opposite of what Mr. N stated. It is happening insidiously but gaining momentum. Thank heavens I shall not be around to witness it. One way or the other I shall be gone.
12. If you are talking about democracy
Khaled ,   Jerusalem   (11.23.11)
Stop depriving the arab Israelis from their basic rights by preventing them from family unification with their families from the Palestinian Territories! If you are talking about democracy make the initiators of the "Price Tag" terrorist activities rot in prison, if you are talking about democracy stop confiscating arab land while continuously building settlements.
13. Netanyahu is a Liar (continue readding)
GF ,   IL   (11.23.11)
Netanyahu is a Liar when he says "we'll never have 'thought police'". What is he talking about. We already have 'thought police', aka the leftist controlled media !!
14. if Israeli democracy is safe...it must be hog boilin' time!
(11.23.11)
15. #7 Rich, please stop.
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (11.23.11)
Parties are defined by their members, usually by internal elections done by registered members of said party. A list is formed and presented to the general public for general elections. The public elects parties. Parties form a coalition. The coalition chooses a prime-minister based on existing parliamentary guidelines - here, the party that manages to form a coalition with the agreement of other parties runs the government. Welcome to multi-party parliamentary democracy. You don't need direct parliamentary representative elections for it to be a democracy, and that sort of thing only ever evolved out of large district representation in the first place. Itself based on feudalism, where the representative in question wasn't even elected.
16. What democracy?
Mike ,   Miami, USA   (11.24.11)
Saying it often enough does NOT make it true.
17. Why are most negative talk backs from the West?
Zionist ,   Israel   (11.24.11)
As I read right now, there are 15 talk backs. They are all from out side Isreal accept 2, and they all complain about this ammendment. Why? YOU don't live here and receive the media LIES we receive every day. No one is getting the reason for this ammendment: Its to have a legal way to deal with the constant barrage of SLANDER we read daily by the left AND by non-Israeli oppinion. LIES, its about dealing with LIES. GO BIBI! You are 100% correct!
18. Democracy
Sagi   (11.24.11)
is a government "of the people, for the people and by the people". This is not the case in Israel nor has it ever been. Democracy starts with a constituition, continues at the ballot box and ends when those elected represent the interests of the majority of the populace. Once again this is not the case in Israel nor has it ever been so.
19. The fact that has to reassure this like every day
Michael ,   West Jerusalem   (11.24.11)
is pretty funny.
