31. iceland thieves on broad daylight!
patrick a.hammel ,   zermatt,switzerland   (11.30.11)
I have the formal authority to declare that the Dutch and British citizens from whom you have stolen billions of euros so that you can feed your bellies since your brains only know deception and thievery are now requesting that instead of playing political heroes you start paying back the stolen monies!!!!
32. @ 10 and 19
Lísa ,   Iceland   (11.30.11)
We don't actually have any special history with vodka. If you're going to be unnecessarily aggressive, at at least get your insults right.
33. All Iceland wants (needs) is muslim money....!
who cares   (11.30.11)
34. Did anyone read the article.
Daniel ,   Tracy USA   (11.30.11)
I know it is nuts, I am not going to defend the move, however did anyone read the article? It says they will recognize the state based on 1967 boarders! That means I am assuming post 1967 war, so all of Jerusalem goes back the the Israelis. The Palestinians will never go for this. If it is pre 1967 boarders that is ridiculous. Jordan had control of the territories not the Palestinians. Lets just say this whole thing is meaningless.
35. Someone had to be first
Paul ,   Miami, USA   (11.30.11)
more will follow. Way to go Iceland!
36. Good. Now open your doors
Arnold ,   Canada   (11.30.11)

37. Earliest inhabitants ?
Jed Clampett ,   Glendale USA   (11.30.11)
Shall we give the United States Back to the American Indians ??? They came from Asia . The USA belongs to those who established a modern society with the large majority of people . We ran away from persecution in England. What Nation really belongs to who ??? One thing is very clear = Israel needs to act at the slightest provocation and wipe out its enemies once and for all. They can do it so easily - Why do they wait and keep taking punishment ?????
38. To Lazlo Toth # 14 & 15
Armand ,   Los Angeles, USA   (11.30.11)
Hey Lazlo, What is wrong are you missing the communist days,....things are not so good right now in your country of origin. Hitler and the nazis too considered themselves as '' human civilians'' as you say. If you want to help these ''Peace loving muslims human civilians'' you should consider joining the HouMESS or HIZBALAHLAHLAHLAH!
39. Abbas' words say no basis for unfreezing PA "tax revenues"
Dr. L. Brnd ,   San Diego, USA   (11.30.11)
The PLO is not backing off from their effort to gain statehood without recognizing Israel or negotiating. In fact, Abbas continues marching full speed ahead toward this goal, as the Iceland stunt proves. Israel should therefore continue freezing the PA tax transfers, and not resume them until the PA resigns from UNESCO membership and withdraws its UN application formally. Any claim that the PLO has ended this conduct is a lie. Given that Iceland has recognized all Jewish communities in the WB and all of E. Jerusalem as Palestinian, Israel should bar any Iceland embassy from opening in Ramallah, by force if necassary, and deport any Iceland diplomats that try to enter the WB.
40. Yahweh versus Iceland's goofy plans...
Curtis ,   USA   (11.30.11)
Yahweh has an eternal plan for Israel: "I will grant Salvation in Zion and My Glory to Israel." All Iceland is accomplishing is poking a finger in Yahweh's eye. We'll see how Iceland fares from here on out.
41. Actually, Iceland was the western world's
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (11.30.11)
first democracy and it continues to have wonderful governing representation from its own populace. The country has clean air; it is fuelled by by thermal power (geysers). Iceland is propelled by fishing and, inland, sheep. The women are considered beautiful. They are also very independent and have achieved high positions in government. What's not to like about this island nation? It's ridiculous attitude towards the Jewish nation, of course.
42. Iceland
David ,   Montreal, Canada   (11.30.11)
What a laugh ! The country that granted Bobby Fischer citizenship and that proudly acknowledged that one of its women married George Rockwell the leader of the American Nazi Party recognizes Palestine. The opinions of Iceland's government and citizens have as much credibility as the country's discredited banking system and bonds.
43. Simple, issue a million building permits in Judea & Samaria.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (11.30.11)

45. to laszlo@ 15
Jennie ,   Israel/US   (11.30.11)
Unfortunately, Laszlo, you have no clue of what the heck are you talking about...So many words and so little sense..."Official recognition" ? And who is the "one, that might be able to help both peoples at the same time" ? I need to save this for a comedy show...
46. Iceland
Ron ,   oc, us   (11.30.11)
Iceland is surrounded by water and is populated by Icelanders: white Christians. Israel is surrounded by Arabs and is backed up against the deep blue sea. Since Iceland wants Israel to take in refugees I think its only fair that Iceland should take in Arab refugees until the white Christians are no longer the majority. It would only take about 300,000 or so for Iceland to become the 22nd Arab state. Get crackin' boys. Allah Akbar!
47. Iceland, a friend of Israel
Thorkelsson ,   Bath UK   (11.30.11)
The British government had in February 1947, asked the UN to decide the future form of government in Palestine. In May 1947 the UN established a Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP), to make recommendations to the General Assembly. The proposals of the Special Committee were finalized at the end of August. On September 23, the General Assembly established an Ad Hoc Committee with representatives from all the 57 member states. On September 25, the Ad Hoc Committee elected the following officers: Dr. Herbert V. Evatt of Australia was elected Chairman. Prince Subhasvasti Svastivat of Siam was elected Vice-Chairman and Mr. Thor Thors of Iceland was elected Rapporteur. The Ad Hoc Committee established three sub-committees. Committee number one was to recommend measures for Partition. The second committee was to recommend measures for a Unitary state in the area. The third committee, was a reconciliation commission. On November 24 - 25 the Ad Hoc Committee defeats the proposal for a unitary state by 16-16-23 (for-against-abstain). The Committee accepts the partition plan by vote (25-18-17) and sends it to the General Assembly for final action (Report A/516). On November 26 the report of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Palestinian Question is presented at the UN General Assembly by Rapporteur Thor Thors from Iceland (A/PV.124) For some unknown reasons, the chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee Dr. Herbert V. Evatt, decided to leave New York on November 27 and take the afternoon train to San Fransisco, where he boarded the SS Matsonia on his way to Australia.(1) It has been suggested that the reason Dr. Evatt left the scene, was that he did not want to alienate the Arab countries any further, because he was already planning his candidacy for the office of UN General Assembly president next year. The Vice-Chairman Prince Subhavasti also decided to leave New York and Siam would be without representation at the UN. Here is a part of the story from Aba Eban in his Autobiography: "By the morning of November 29 the Thai delegate, Prince Wan, had prudently departed for Bangkok on the Queen Mary, ostensibly on the grounds that a revolutionary situation existed in his country, but actually in order to avoid having to cast a vote against partition."(2) (Note: The name of the Thai delegate, was Prince Subhasvasti, not Prince Wan) Now we have the strange situation, that the Chairman (that normally would have presented the findings of the Committee) and the Vice-Chairman have left New York, and the final presenting of the proposals of the Ad Hoc Committee prior to the General Assembly voting, is left with the Rapporteur, the Icelandic representative Mr. Thor Thors.
48. Don't be too harsh they are a bit "apart" in their mentality
tom ,   tel aviv   (11.30.11)
-being islanders and Icelanders makes their head spin in a different direction... I have met many of them, they are lovely but convoluted people; and don't forget: if our own brothers&sisters in the Land of Israel can join in Arab marches & protests against "Occupation" what the hell do you expect from far-away people, that are being fed daily Arab propaganda?! Next to Yossi Beilin/Yossi Sarid/Shula Aloni...Gdeon Levy (may he suffer from lice!) the Icelanders are Innocenti...!!???
49. A few points...
Icelander ,   Iceland   (11.30.11)
It is shocking to see how little many of you know about my country. 1. This was not done to win favour with other countries. We are coping just fine as it is. This move has been coming for a long time and the public has been demanding action (if anything it is remarkable that we have not broken off diplomatic relations). 2. The majority of the population supports this move. The only real exceptions are middle aged men who vote for the right wing parties (and the religious zelots of course). 3. Iceland is not bankrupt. We did go through a meltdown but we are doing fine considering everything. We have not made any deals with any arabs. The sheer audacity of such a claim is mind boggling. In fact Iceland is in many ways in much better health than Israel financially speaking. Perhaps because we do not have a war machine to oppress our neighbors. 4. We do not owe money to Iran at all. A single businessman of iranian descent thinks he has a case but that is it. 5. An urge to side with the opressed is deeply imbedded in our soul and to the world it is quite obvious who the oppressed are in this instance. 6. Islamophobia is more prevalent here than anti-semitism. 7. Someone mentioned tuna-canning. That is almost racist ;) Poking fun at our whaling is much better. 8. Saying that almost 100% of us are clueless about this matter is downright wrong. Not buying into Israeli propoganda does not equal cluelessness.
50. loving Israel
worried ,   worldwide   (11.30.11)
I hope the other Scandinavians wont do the same mistake !!
51. Where's Iceland?
Jack ,   San Diego, USA   (11.30.11)
52. It is not the same government
SB ,   Iceland   (11.30.11)
It is not the same government, the government that gave a home for poor Booby Fischer, due their shared history (his and Icelands), was ruled by the Party that did not vote yesterday, the same right-wing government that caused the well known financial crash.
53. Leftist Lesbian PM?
SB ,   Iceland   (11.30.11)
Your own predjuice reveals you. The fact is that Icelanders care very much about independece around the world. Being only independent in 1944 Icelanders felt very strongly about Israel in 1947, and though it has taken a long time, they feel very strongly about independce for Palestine in 2011, just as they did for the Baltic states. Your assessment of Icelanders is completely wrong. Iceland has no army and are, almost all, against any type of violence and warfare. From anyone.
54. Hardly
SB ,   Iceland   (11.30.11)
There are no labels on the home made brew. Recognizing Palestine is neither an attack on Israel nor a cause for such dumv vitriol. Icelanders care for small nations, being one itself, early champions of Israel as such, and now finally Palestine.
55. Please do.
SB ,   Iceland   (11.30.11)
And leave your Vineland as well, as Icelanders, --sadly, you'll think--both found and named that god for saken place. It's only claim to fame is--: that Icelanders found it and--probably should claim it from under your ... house.
56. The Icelanders really have humor
Yael Schlichting ,   Raubling - Germany   (11.30.11)
Iceland has around half as much citizens as Haifa!
57. #4 world
solomon ,   bklyn   (11.30.11)
No, they are not first country to recognise the "rightful indigenous owners" of Palestine. They are the first country to fall victim to the lies perpetrated by the remnants of the Moslem invasion of 600+AD. The rightful indigenous owners have returned, and they are the Jews.
58. Iceland and Israel
solomon ,   bklyn   (11.30.11)
The posts read as if Iceland is overwhelmingly against Israel. Read the article again. True, 60% of legislators voted for "Palestine", but this does not a landslide make. Read also #7 tahl. Sometimes it is better to get more information, especially if one hasn't been to the country in question. This is the same as Israelis tell others who condemn Israel without being there, and they are right.
59. #21 sjoerd
solomon ,   bklyn   (11.30.11)
So you also support the annihilation of Israel? You also support the fantasies of people that conquered the area only in the 600's AD? You also support those who avoid serious talk of peace, teach their children to be martyrs, and want to make whatever land they can convince the world to give them, judenrein? That says a lot about you. No thank you.
60. Island's Realpolitik
Michael ,   California, USA   (11.30.11)
They do what is perceived as good for them. Most of the countries are like that, will be voting along Island in the U.N.. But the Security Council will have a mind of their own. I am sure the foreign ministry in Jerusalem is expecting a huge defeat in the General Assembly. The foreign ministry has been forewarned about it for a long time. I never heard anybody there lost any sleep over it. Will Avigdor skip a vodka drink now or get stone drunk to forget?
