31. Israel at least is demographically healthy
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (12.07.11)
Almost every Western country is exhibiting demographic decline because their birth rates are below replacement level. They're also aging, and the smaller number of young workers will be unable to support their elderly. That's true for "old Europe" (Western), and even more true for "new Europe" (Eastern). Japan shows the same pattern. But so too do Iran and Turkey. (Not so the more backward Arab and Muslim countries where fecundity remains high.) Among the Western exceptions: the US (which is slowly growing) and Israel. And contrary to expectation, even Israel's secular Jews are giving birth at above replacement rate. (The same can't be said for secular Jews in the US.) These trends are a major theme in David Goldman's "How Civilizations Die".
32. Complicated
yaakov ,   TA   (12.07.11)
Unfortunately there are real schisms in Israel today among Jews, and to be honest many Hassidim are not loyal to the State of Israel---they will tell you that themselves. So to the extent that the statistics include the baby boom within that community, there is some question about the impact of these calculations and the future of Israel.
33. Demographics
Al2000 ,   Odessa, Ukraine   (12.07.11)
It's not racist...it's just statistics.
34. Bigger picture: SECURE BIG ISRAEL, nonviolent transfer.
Jerry ,   The Netherlands   (12.07.11)
35. Horst #17 what are you drinking?
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (12.07.11)
"a purely racist and apartheid style report." How in the world does a pure statistical analysis become racist exactly? Or is it because it reports that not only are Jews the majority in Israel, that the percentage is increasing that makes you give such a moronic comment? The real racist is you not the report.
36. ''ISRAEL'' IN ASIA.
SJOERD RUURD VDV ,   MULTIVERSE   (12.08.11)
ANY/EVERY PEOPLE WHO LIVED/LIVE IN ''ISRAEL'' ALREADY AND SO ON, HAS THE RIGHT TO BE THERE/TO LIVE THERE IN ANY CASE FOR ACHIEVING A PEACEFULL SOLUTION FOR ALL. THAT FACT HAS BEEN WELL-KNOWN SINCE 1948.
37. @ #8, #35: statistics..
Esther ,   Amsterdam   (12.07.11)
The statistics are not racist per se; however, talk about a ' demographic threat' obviously is.
38. Long term, it's still a disaster the numbers compound.
Scott ,   USA   (12.08.11)
If one out of four births is Arab, then fifty years from now one out of four Israelis will be Arab. And since these Arabs will have a high birth rate, the next generation will be one out of three, then one out of two, and so on. Add the Heredi breeding program to the equation, and the result is inevitable -- Israel won't be able to survive it. Something must be done, but what? I know -- draft them, male and female! You can't breed like rabbits if you're in the army...
39. Arab Population still growing faster than Jewish Population
Cool Head ,   Germany   (10.02.12)
What the articles does not mention is that, while the birth rate of the Jews has risen and that of the Israeli Arabs has fallen since 2001, the latter still have significantly more children. The demographic growth of the Arab population has slowed, but their share of the total population is still growing.
