31. Uri for PM
Roy ,   Canada   (12.14.11)
If you think its so easy and you have all the answers then step right up my friend! Most of us don't give a crap how its done, just let's see you do it. End the wars, bring the peace. Yalla let's see it Mr smarty pants.
32. try this for a bit
Roy ,   Canada   (12.14.11)
Israel has no end all be all soultion to violence. You want quiet? Here's the only way. The minute the other side does anything you hit 10 fold. The world will scream, shut them up. Stand up for yourself. The left screams, arrest them, charge them with treason, or uttering treasonus language. Arabs speak only one language and its called force. The faster you learn this, the more quiet you'll have. You want permanent quiet then either keep dreaming or move to Canada where its too cold and there's too much beer to keep fighting. Period, end of story!
33. Targeted killing works!
Reuven   (12.14.11)
34. Leftist
michael pielet ,   israel   (12.14.11)
This is sick immoral leftist nonsense. Uri is only happy when jews are murdered.
35. A Ha! But with the addition of a little
Gideon Reader   (12.14.11)
massive artillery and air bombardment wonders, miracles can be achieved. What you cannot do with select and targeting, CAN be done by flattening EVERYTHING in the area, and the fish that swim in the supporting sea. Did I say really, REALLY flat?
36. Why targeted? I like a REMIX!!
Albert Levin ,   Buenos Aires ARG   (12.14.11)
mix of targeted and randon, so the Gazans feel they are not safe enough with that terrorist government. Let's kill a whole neighbourhood so they will think twice before electing a Hamas candidate. Surely you will not publish this comment because you are arab monger
37. YES to #4
Albert Levin ,   Buenos Aires ARG   (12.14.11)
yes, of course, I would like a moon-like view in Gaza, no more life at all. Not even the scorpions.
38. Another way? Submit to Hammas, convert
Stephen in New York   (12.14.11)
to Islam, commit suicide-all alternatives to self-defense.
39. Another Way
Yoav ,   Vancouver   (12.14.11)
Step 1) : Set up pro-Palestinian refugee organizations in Nordic European and North American democracies. Meanwhile apply pressure on Arab governments to assign rights to Palestinians already living there. Provide a cash incentive for those who wish to relinquish their claim to the land. Step 2): Make life unbearable for the civilian population in Gaza, Judea and Samaria to the point where they feel compelled to either throw out the fanatics or leave.
40. Uri - useless moron
Barry   (12.14.11)
Needs serious electroshock therapy, but, in reality, there is no cure for stupid.
41. This is one of the most disgusting articles I ever read...
Asher ,   NY,USA   (12.14.11)
42. ANOTHER WAY - EMULATE OBAMA
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (12.14.11)
Talk to them until your blue in the face, the way Obama is talking to Iran Iran continues merrily on its way to obtaining a Nuclear bomb While we're talking to Gaza, they moved their rocket assembly plant to the Sinai (Egyptian territory) hoping that we would dare go after them in Egypt Use our drones at every opportunity, Hamas can cry of their spilled blood at their convenience As far we are concerned, any of their rocket plants are located in Gaza, whether they are or aren't
43. What other method is as effective?
Vlad   (12.14.11)
Terrorists embrace death and are not intimidated by the prospect of a life sentence in an Israeli prison, especially after the Shalit deal. The way to seriously hurt them is deprive them of effective leadership and cut off the head of the snake.
44. Killing Yassin and Rantisi seemed to have an impact
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (12.14.11)
Doesn't work? Perhaps he's forgotten the targeted killing of Hamas leader Yassin, followed shortly thereafter by his successor Rantisi. Hamas' leadership quickly went underground and things got quieter. Yes, targeted killing can prove effective. For years we've heard that "land for peace" argument, but that didn't work. And Israel is regularly slammed for "collective punishment". Now he argues against targeted killing. So what *does* he recommend, aside from appeasement or surrender?
45. Targeted Killings?
Douglas Fireman ,   Chicago, USA   (12.14.11)
I disagree with the author. Targeted killings should continue for as long as Hamas and cohorts continue shooting rockets/mortars into Israel. I believe the terrorists hope and pray that a missile will hit a school, a hospital or any other area where people congregate. Rather than build bunkers, ammo supply depots and or fire missiles from populated areas, Hamas should build bomb shelters for their citizens. All one has to do is read Hamas' Charter to realize that killing Jews and destroying Israel is one of their main goals. Targeted killings should continue until Hamas and other terrorist groups stop placing the lives of innocent Israeli's in Jeopardy.
46. he's right, sort of...
tom ,   toronto, canada   (12.14.11)
apart from all the leftist piecenik claptrap, the author is right, in a way... targeted killings have not always been as effective as they might be. killing the leading terrorist operatives is at best a tactical move, which provides only a limited effect, partly because there are plenty of lower ranks to take their place, and partly because they are just cannon fodder, who *want* to die and become martyrs, unlike the high-profile ideologues of terror, who prefer to sacrifice others for the cause. it's those "leaders" who are ultimately responsible for inciting and dispatching terror attacks, and targeting them shows up their cowardice and callous criminality. but that wouldn't sit well with the leftist pieceniks.
47. a simple question to uri misgav
tom ,   toronto, canada   (12.14.11)
since the disengagement from gaza, the arab palestinians have fired 15,000 rockets into israel. how many of those 15,000 were "in response" to targetted assassinations?
48. targeted killings - for what?
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (12.14.11)
The concept of targeted killings has not born fruits, nor will it. It is a system of tit for tak that has not stopped any Arab aggression. The reason is simple there are not just one or two terrorists there, but a majority of the inhabitants support the Hammas. Until Hammas disappears, (good dream) killing one or two operatives is like killing a cockroach and not going after the nest. The only good that targeted killings does is make good press.
49. Hmmmmm..
Joshua ,   Israel   (12.14.11)
So let's try what the Arabs suggested- land for peace! Oh yeah, that only got us more Israelis killed.... They need to know that nothing will hide them. That they are Amalek and that we will destroy them if they seek to do the same to us. (clarification: any person who wants Israel or a Jew dead for theere fact that they are Israeli or Jewish, I regard as Amalek)
50. Targeted Killings Work
john   (12.14.11)
See the article "targeted killings work" in Infinity Journal - should put an end to this ridiculous op ed
51. Unfair and immoral?
Michael Redbourn ,   Arad Israel   (12.14.11)
I was already put off by the words "unfair" and "immoral" in the title. Israel is at war and not playing ping-pong. The author obviously believes in the idea of using limited and proportional force to defeat an enemy, which is something that has never been successful. "Successful" meaning one side actually lost, such as with Germany and Japan. I could only think of N Tel coffee shop chats as I scanned the article. Thank G*d Israel doesn't rely on the likes of Uri Misgav for its survival. This is the 2nd or 3rd of his nonsensical articles that have appeared and I won't bother wasting any time on the next one.
52. What is new here?
Ofer Maimon ,   Beer Sheva, Israel   (12.14.11)
Some dude, probably residing in the Merkaz, thinks that us people stupid and poor enough to live in Darom, should simply resign ourselves to the fact of being awoken in the middle of the night by the air raid sirens. Meanwhile he bemoans the civilian victims of the targeted killings, naturally without a word spilled on us "arabs" in Sderot, Ashkelon or Beer Sheva. The author honestly think that anyone this side of the border is happy about civilians - any civilians - getting killed? "The has to be another way!" Well, which? The only thing that worked for a long period of time was Operation Cat Led. That might be another way, no doubt. Or the Gazans toppling the fascist pigs they voted into power, to whom dead civilian Palestinians are just another Propaganda asset. A third would be re-occupation and re-settlement, followed by the unconditional deportation of the Arab population. But this is clearly not on the authors mind. He simply wants us to accept the situation as is, or move to Tel Aviv. Impressive, although a solution trumpeted by Haaretz for 20 odd years. Every day.
53. Targeted killings are justified!
Liz Biggin ,   Rotherham, UK   (12.14.11)
The terrorists in Gaza should be prevented from carrying out attacks, by killing them if necessary, regardless of the danger posed to nearby civilians. In a war there are always civilian casualties and Israel cannot put the lives of its citizens in danger, they come first. And when atacks are carried outm the terror groups need to pay the price in blood. Its that simple. The Arabs will continue to attack and kill Israelis regardless of any "peace deal".
54. Facts don't bear you out Mr Misgav
Danny   (12.14.11)
I mean know they don't mean anything to you as a pathological liar but one only has to see the campaign carried out 2002-2004 and the corresponding decline in terror attacks. If this doesn't help you then have a quick look at the stats once Israel stopped the systematic campaign them out post 2006.
55. Uri Misanthrope
Bob Cohen ,   Miami   (12.14.11)
I "disagree" with every "word" you wrote, "Uri". Why don't you just bow down to Mohammed and move to Iran. I'm sure they would appreciate your "opinions" and "ideas" over there.
56. There is a mistake
Patrick ,   Versailles France   (12.14.11)
The auhtor is Gideon Levy the well known enemy of Israel !
57. If we believe in peace, act peace!
Esther   (12.14.11)
If we really plan on cooperation and peace in the future, we have to act upon this already now. Every time a child or youth or person is hurt by us, we create a potential enemy. It is time, now, to start acting on the peace we say we want. There is too much macho in the army and in the government. We must learn another way - perhaps women - mothers - can show the way better in peace than generals?
58. Thank goodness this dufus is not in our Cabinet.
Tahl   (12.14.11)
59. I think Uri Migav would be happier living in Norway.
Scott ,   USA   (12.14.11)
60. There needs to be more targeting not less.
Kyle Broflovski ,   South Park, USA   (12.14.11)
